Does anyone else think it would be cool to have living walls? Like that wall of skulls that someone made, except when you walk by it it hurts you or tries to squish you, and you'd have to kill it. Also, what about a beholder? I think that would be so cool! Anyone else got ideas?

There were living walls in BoE, but in BoA they'll be a little more difficult because of the way walls are located between tiles.

—Alorael, who would like to see monsters that use the programmable behavior scripts to fight intelligently. For example, archers that kill mages in the back instead of firing at (and missing) the front-line fighters would make combat far more challenging.

I'm still exploring the idea of dopplegangers, which start off as a certain monster, then have a (probably high) chance to transform into the next monster in the set. Of course you'd need to create the new monsters, which would be identical to the old ones, but would call a special that replaced them with the next monster in line. I think this would be possible in BoE, but I can't remember. It would depend on whether the 'Create Monster' node required an X/Y coordinate.

This was done several times in BoE. After a timer or the death of the first monster, the second monster would replace it. This would go on until you killed it before the timer ran out or the monster died in its final form.

Why, not at all! In fact, I'm going to get working on that immediately.

I seem to rember Jeff saying that that would happen on the bing long post at BOE forum. It was in reply to the whole 'magic bullet' type thing.

Also - wall monsters. It might work if you had a bit of the wall jutting out a bit:

The aforementioned wall of skulls was created by me. I'm glad someone actually has an idea that actually makes good use of it, other than undead forts. I might finish the skull wall set later.
TM says it doesn't look anything like skulls, though. Does anyone think it does?

The Tarrasque.

Or maybe something in a similar vein. Hell, you could have a scenario that revolves around killing the dang thing. Give it a low number of action points, but the ability (and stats) to kill and eat anything in its path, regenerate HP, special immunities/resistances, a high defense, etc. Then the task is to track it down, enlist the help of certain NPC's (who all show up at the final battle), and hopefully, if you're really really lucky ;) , kill it. We can forget about that whole negative 40hp and the use of a Wish to kill it though.

But that probably isn't the kind of monster you're looking for. :P

Sounds like dragons in Avernum, but without spells.

True. Oh well.
How about griffons?
Bugbears?
Lamasu?
Catoblepas?
Scuzzlebutt (yes, from Southpark :) )?
Lamia?
Linorms (Norse dragons; Worms, not Wyrms)?
Most of these are about as clear as mud unless you have a D&D Monster Manual, but still, they're not bad.
Demi Lich? (about one step below demigods in terms of magic)
Titans (giants with strength, every usable combat ability availible to players, and magic and/or priest spells)
Scyla (sp?) or maybe it was Charybdis, I can't remember.

How about an attacking building? You could make "Wall monsters" which jut out be around it. Maybe a door could open on it every few moments, letting out some beasties. And maybe the beasties could walk around and repair the walls.
Heck, there are so many possibilites I can't list them all.

...maybe the beasties could spontaneously combust after a minute or two...

Demi Liches are below Liches in power, aren't they?

Spider? I'm reading the Odyssey in English class. Scylla is a six-headed sea monster. Charybdis is a whirlpool.

Demi Lich: Ancient lich. The only part of it's body that remains is the skull. During combat, it pulls together a body of the dust and debris, to scare away the foolish (i.e. casts level three terror on multiple targets all at once). It can attack with the dust body, but only deals and recieves half damage. Beware its spells as they have been perfected over the centuries. It can capture the soul of an enemy within one of its gem-teeth, the soulless body dissolves into dust in less than a minute after that. To defeat it, it's skull must be destroyed and sanctified. If the skull is just shattered, it will eventually become whole again.

Give it a spirit for a body, that will always drop a skull when defeated. The skull must be destroyed using either a special skill or a custom item. Alternatively, you could allow the skull itself to attack magically as well. Anywho, it would probably be a "boss" monster, with events scripted to simulate custom spells (due to long centuries of research). I'll leave that up to you guys though.

I think it may be best to stay away from the standard AD&D creatures. They have become all too cliched in RPGs. Rather, invent creatures to fit your scenario. The more creative the better.

I'd generally agree with stareye. Still, though, if the glove fits, wear it. If a monster works in the given situation, use it.

demi liches are the most powerful liches of all normal liches (ie no name) will probly be not as strong and not talk as much but demi liches have allways had a large sense of pride and are mages strong mages (etc.triad/garzhard/erica) that have studied so much magic that have made their bodies immune to the will of death cuasing them to study arcane magic till the day they are slayed but anyless the demilich can only die by taking their evil energies out like the guy said or have a powerful weapon with the means of slaying the undead other wise the lich could take your soul and add its power to his demiliches are also freinds of demons (expect a few demon and vampire guards)dont forget elder vampires they are more powerful than normal liches not as strong as demi though.and will take your essence and not your soul could kill you if you dont have an essence but atleast you got a soul.

Scylla was more of a hydra-like monster. It ate Odysseus' crew six at a time.

Draghkar - Eagle & wolf cross, much like a griffon, but only about as intelligent as an eagle (i.e. pretty stupid)

Make it able to cross barriers such as water or lava, but don't worry too much about how to make it look like it's flying, just do what they did in the old Shining Force ©™ (whatever else is required) games. They didn't bother trying to make it look like it was flying, they just said it flew. Since the image doesn't change unless it's attacking, you don't have to worry about special graphics.

Which reminds me: Jeff should include some sort of 'monster can fly?' flag that allows the monster to pass over water and lava indoors.

That would be a very nice ability for creatures. They would simply ignore all terrain and their affects. Walls, of course would be different.

This wouldn't be terribly difficult for Jeff, but it could take a lot of time--and he may not find it worthwhile.

There could be a Living Wall Cave, like the bat cave in A2. The newbies could go in there to get experience by killing walls!
