What kind of new species would be best for BoA?

Seeing that the four species you listed would not be new ones, you'd pretty much have to say other.

Maybe he meant for PCs? Personally, I'd love to see Vahnatai here, but that won't happen. Jeff will stick to the current races.

It really doesn't matter, though. They can be simulated.

Blayde, do you mean for PCs  , because otherwise all of these species are already in the games and have been for a long time.

Yeah, I'd love to see Vahnatai PC's, if only because I'm a mage-and-priest lover and they'd have awesome magical capabilities. Probably a 15% exp. penalty, but +2 MAG or something like that, and +1 per 5 levels, like the sliths with pole weapons.

Actually, you can give them stat bonuses with the Character editor. It would still say they're humans/nephils/sliths in the info screen, but other than that, it works well enough. Aside from the fact that checks to see if you have a nephil or slith in your party would be triggered, even if you don't have one. Okay, maybe it doesn't work so well. Maybe there will still be a way around it, though. We'll just have to wait and see.

Nephilim have 10% exp. penalty, sliths 20%, perhaps a super race like vahnatai would have a bit more than 15%?

Around 30%, probably. Let's not go overboard, and unbalance the game.

However, if you were to have the Vahnatai as a PC, you would have to have some uber-powerful beast like a troglodyte or a giant (now THAT would be cool!) to keep the game balanced.

Even cooler would be a party where each member is superior in their role, but has to rely almost entirely on the roles of other PCs to not get killed. This would make a challenge of leadership, a sort of rock-paper-scissors type thing. You could do this with a Vahnatai (Ultimate Mage, almost no strength) a Giant (Incredible hand to hand, no magic allowed) a Dryad (Preist spells and potions, but slow and high encumberance) and a Troglodyte (Same as Giant, just a little faster and a little weaker, perhaps big bonus with pole weapons.)

However, if one of the PCs died...

You would reload. But since I reload 99% of the time any party member dies, it's no big deal.

Except for the fact that Vahnatai are stronger than humans and nephilim.

Rakshasi and Illithid PCs. Both are more magically apt and stronger than Vahnatai, and Rakshasi absorb spells to boot. Then again, Rakshasi and Illithids just wouldn't be feasible (with exception to parties who love murder en masse)- neither speak Imperial Common, and the latter has no vocal chords and communicates with telepathy.

Still! It would be interesting to see a race that heals itself with Firestorm. :)

Ah, TM? Last time I checked, Rakshasi were rather vaguely portrayed in Avernum. And illithids do not appear at all. A BoA based on your scenarios would be a scary thing...

—Alorael, who doesn't remember anywhere explicitly stating that the vahnatai are stronger. Effective in combat, certainly, but their weapons and style don't quire strength the way a halberd-wielding, heavily-armored human would.

And it's not wearing a brightly colored cloak (It could be a midget, you never know.)

It seemed to me that the vahnatai seemed very quick and high damage warriors with low HP and excess in skills like Assasinaton, Defense, Thrown Weapons, Agility, Magery, Mage skill, Blademaster, Gymnastics, etc. And low points in Strength, Endurance, Bows, Pole Weapons, Hardiness, and other similar skills. Therefore, to balance a Vahnatai you would need a very slow, strong character with almost no mage skill, AKA Giants or Troglodytes. Or sliths, on second thought...

And what is an Illithicid thing? 'scuse me for my spellin'

A Vahnatai has higher HP than Sliths, and their endurance and poison resistance is high.

They're not especially weak, just thin. And they have higher health and resistance to magic and poison than humans, which would mean their endurance and maybe hardiness are high as well.

None of the above are slow, although none are known for dexterity, either. Sliths have quite skilled mages, and troglodyte khazis are not only good mages but good priests as well. Giants aren't quite as magical, but their shamans are nothing to sneeze at either.

—Alorael, who is sure TM would be happy to tell you everything you'd like to know and then some about illithids.

I think they're kind of like Nephilim in their stats, but even more extreme. Vahnatai weapons are light and fast, which seems to imply that you need a lot of dexterity, but little strength, to wield them. And the razor-disks remind me of ninjas or something.

Topic resurrection is usually not appreciated unless there is a real need for the topic to return, but there are no rules against it.

—Alorael, who doesn't think this is a terrible case of revival. At least some new life was brought into the topic instead of a simple *bump*.
