The first question would be better if it was how many hours do you actually get to sleep. I would like 8, but with noise, etc. I settle for 6 and sometimes it's closer to 4 hours.

I usually get 10 hours on my days off, which offsets my 4-5 hours on school/work days.

"Golden" anything pretty much suggests that, perhaps with the exception of the Golden Arches.

I agree with Drew. Reading "Golden xxxxxxx" on the interwebs always leads my brain to the showers. It was just surprising that it came from Excalibur, but I suppose it was inevitable. :P

I only voted for what is the most common for me. Thanksgiving week will be a little different for me because I get a week off and have no homework. That means I can spend it doing nothing but computer games (A5 demo).

I need at least seven hours to be fully functional the next day, but I rarely get that much. Insomnia and overactive thoughts keep me awake in bed far too long, and knowing this I often find myself sitting and reading, posting here, or otherwise spending time that I should be sleeping in other activities.

—Alorael, who would say that he probably does get seven hours on average, but it's an average mostly of getting six hours or so and then being tired enough the next day to fall sleep easily and get a good 7-8 hours.

I usually spend 7-8 hours in bed, but I often lose sleep from thinking too much and how long I'm actually asleep is difficult to say and varies from day to day.

When laying in bed I have a tendency to do what is known as "deep daydreaming" which isn't far off from usual dreaming, which I do all night every night. I've also been working on developing the capacity to shift my state of consciousness at will. So the line between awake and asleep has gotten rather fuzzy.

To maintain a semblance of functionality, I require at least three hours of sleep. To actually function, I require four and a half to five hours. To operate at my peak, I require between seven and eight hours, with about a two-hour gap of relative uselessness after I wake up in order to stimulate myself both physically and mentally for the rest of the day.
On average, I'll get about six hours of sleep a night while I'm at school, and about seven hours when I'm not at school, but working full time.

While my addictions to good pieces of art (music, games, and books. especially books) has historically been the item to keep me up, as of late, my fiancee refuses to let me off the phone until long after my preferred bedtime.

It does sometimes make getting to sleep and staying asleep a bit of a challenge but I'm getting better at deliberately causing myself to fall asleep.

The real challenge is that while I'm dreaming, after a while, I often tend to start thinking too much in ways that cause my mind to slip into a state closer to consciousness and I wake up. So I often wake up in the middle of the night one or more times and then need to get to sleep again. But I'm working on that.

When I read the title, I thought it was going to be something about the Beatles.

Usually TV and reading keep me up, but recently I've stayed up web surfing and completing my abruptly excessive homework.

The topic "Across the Universe" received no such comments. :(

As I understood the question, he is asking "when you stay up too late, what are you doing?" In this interpretation, I am surprised that anybody answered "work", considering that even an occasional 12-hour workday leaves enough time to go home, have dinner, and fall asleep at a reasonable time. So does your answer imply that you are working 60 hours a week, or did I misunderstand the question?

My dad's a teacher: during exam season, he's up until 2 or 3 in the morning most nights marking papers. There are other professions that have to take work home with them as well.
