Due to excessive disk usage I will need to prune the General Forum. This will occur on 6/30, this coming Sat.
Please back up anything of importance this week. I will be pruning all topics that are over 30 days old.

Ooh, Aran'll have fun with that. He just finished backing up RWG and Subterra.

Why not prune the whole forum? It would clear up a lot more space, and it's not like there are a whole bunch of topics in the games forums that could be trimmed back.

Ooh! Prunes!

Anyway, maybe this will reduce the number of 500 Internal Server Errors.

Ha! Take that, Murphy! It is the week of my presentation and I do not need to spend my evenings desperately monkeying with PHP!

---

Correction Sara: If you'd paid attention you would have noticed that the entire boards are archived and still being synchronized now. This post should appear on PPP within the hour.

However, I may want to bump a few of the topics that were really nice. For example, the conclusion of MoS deserves a stay of execution for now, and I'll dredge up the Reloaded threads too, of course.

Do your bots also record your annoying spammy double posts?

We got it after one post. Please refrain from posting the same thing twice again, as it is an annoyance to us respectable members. :P

The 500 must be just a rough estimate.

I don't think inactive user prunes are ever done, or else I would've had a far higher member number by now.

Well, this probably means goodby to all my muffin threads. It doesn't matter, the story and the story in process are on my computer...which is way back in Colorado.

If pruning the General Forum doesn't save us enough then pruning other forums might happen but I'm loathe to do that since the old topics in the game forums are helpful to our actual customers. The Blades of Avernum forum is the most bloated so it would be first to get pruned but again I'd rather not prune any game forum. I'd rather overprune the General forum since it appears to be mostly chit-chat.

Are you suggesting that general forum posters aren't actual customers?

I think it's more about us technically being customers, but not acting in that official capacity while on General. :P

(Keep in mind that Jeff actually does read and occasionally reply to General topics; it's not like we're unwelcome loiterers here. I guess it's just when the board exceeds 50k posts that it needs to be trimmed.)

Could someone explain to me how pruning these forums will reduce the number of errors?

On another note, it feels like the General forum was pruned very recently?

Well, everytime we make a post on the board, we eat up a little bit of memory. Things like pictures eat more memory. Eventually we eat so much memory that the Board starts to run out of space and malfunctions/slows down/whatever.

EDIT: Hawk King: To my knowledge there will not be an inactive member purge. Though there should be, if you don't post anything for three years. The last purge I can remember was about a year ago, so no, General hasn't been purged recently. Unless your talking about the RWG and SubTerra forums being deleted.

My understanding was that, since images are delivered via links and not uploaded to Spiderweb's server, they don't take up any memory at all, or a very minimal amount.

If you link to the image, then it doesn't take up much space. However, if you actually post the image then it does.

There's a very real chance that this is wrong, since I don't know much about how Irony Central works. I'm just going with general rules I've figured out.

 Wha-- Oh... Why... You... You mean, general rules you have--- wait, nevermind. Geez, I can get excited sometimes.

When you link or include ("hotlink") an image all that is stored on the server is what you type into the text area. As an example, we'll take the Google logo:

When you view a page, the server converts this and sends you the following:

<img src="http://www.google.com/intl/en_ALL/images/logo.gif" />Your browser will then know that at this point in the page, it should download and display the image, like so:

IMAGE(http://www.google.com/intl/en_ALL/images/logo.gif)

Irony Central does not even have an idea whether the image actually exists. It never lands on their server.

And saving this for last: When you include an image, you're taking up less space, since the code for the hotlink is shorter than that for the link:

http://www.google.com/intl/en_ALL/images/logo.gif
Of course, this is a difference of a few letters, so it really is completely pointless.

Anyway, technical rant over.

The UBB occasionally prunes members by itself, but its criteria are ineffable. The result usually manages to eff the boards up anyway, though.

—Alorael, who thinks that's why inactive users are never pruned. It's a matter of letters, really. Although with careful pruning there could be bonsai members, which would be very nice...
