I noticed that on these boards, a topic will start, have a good conversational thread, then gets derailed and the topic twists around into some parody of what was originally intended. I have to wonder, does this happen all of the time or is it just me... Poll Information This poll contains 1 question(s). 19 user(s) have voted. I went with 80%-89%. There are a few topics that stay on topic, but it's not a frequent occurance. -------------------- "You're drinking liquor because you're thirsty? Very few threads stay on topic if they don't get locked first. Which is sometimes a detriment to me. If I find the title uninteresting, or the first post, I may not go in or ever go back in until a week later when on page ten I start to wonder what everybody's still talking about. I've missed some good discussions that way. -------------------- Forever Always on Past the End TrueSite for Blades - Blades Walkthroughs Pixle Profusion - BoE Graphics Archive Posts: 563 | Registered: Tuesday, July 27 2004 07:00 |

Well, I prefer blue, myself. I can't understand why some people would like pink... purple or red aren't too bad either. [/thread-derail] Posts: 587 | Registered: Tuesday, April 1 2003 08:00 |

Topics do tend to get derailed, unless they have some long-lasting reason to stay on topic (like an RP), probably because people can only say so much about a given topic. But it works both ways. Interesting topics can get turned into boring ones, and boring topics can get turned into interesting ones. Dikiyoba's favorite color is orange, with black and green as second-favorites. Edit: Typo. It's cold here but we missed the snow. My favorite color is plum purple(though most shades are nice), with craola's midnight blue as a close second. -------------------- Forever Always on Past the End TrueSite for Blades - Blades Walkthroughs Pixle Profusion - BoE Graphics Archive Posts: 563 | Registered: Tuesday, July 27 2004 07:00 |

Wednesday was cold, but other than that it's been pretty mild. And dry. Dikiyoba wonders how different lengths of topics compare. One-page topics (because no discussion really got going) and 11+ page topics (because they must have a reason to exist that brings them back on track) probably stay on topic more than 2-10 page topics. Don't make me lock this. Most topics don't last long enough to get derailed, and most game threads stay focused. Also, I think there's a difference between conversation drift, which is fine, and derailment, which is sadly frequent. And sometimes fine, I guess. —Alorael, who thinks some topics need to be derailed as quickly as possible. When there's nothing good and relevant to say, say something good anyway! Derailment is a good thing. Some topics just suck, so what's wrong with them taking a turn to something completely off topic and more interesting? If people like the original topic, derailment will not be necessary. If the topic is boring and weak, derailing it and continuing in a different direction can only be healthy for the board as a whole. -------------------- You lose. Proof that Tullegolar's philosophy can be applied virtually anywhere, anytime. :P EDIT: made the joke a bit more obvious. Yet again Alorael has made the perspicacious analysis. I think we all implicitly thought that the question only applied to topics in General, and so the estimated percentage of derailment was skewed way up. What a great pun, Nioca. -------------------- Thuryl: I mean, most of us don't go around consuming our own bodily fluids, no matter how delicious they are. ==== Alorael: War and violence would end if we all had each other's babies! ==== Drakefyre: Those are hideous mangos. quote:Except that, overall, more topics are made on General than any other forum. Blue, no red. Even game threads change unless they are very short question and answer types. Thread drift occurs as people get bored with the original topic and because it's easier to alter an existing thread than start a new one. What is this snow that you speak of? I haven't had real snow in years. Too bad since it would kill off the new crop of weeds. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

I'd have to say fire. No, wait, ice. Definitely ice. But fire's good too. Topic de-railment is good. It leads to interesting conversations. -------------------- You acquire an item: Radio Free Foil Posts: 1169 | Registered: Monday, September 23 2002 07:00 |
