At least for a year. I've no idea what changed on the policy page in question, but this was the first time I noticed that Jeff had a one year satisfaction completely guaranteed refund policy. I'm not sure it's unprecedented in the software arena, but it's got to be close. Two huzzahs for software satisfaction guarantees.

Huzzah. Huzzah.

I can't remember ever noticing that before.

Ah, but see, the software is secretly designed to satisfy for exactly a year and a day, and then start to suck like crazy. Those "money-back" schemes are a big scam played on us by the big corporations, I tell you!

I'm willing to bet that the change was made yesterday. I'm also sure we'll hear about it when the maililng list proclaims the release of GF4.

—Alorael, who also thinks this is a pretty unprecedented move for a game, particularly when there's absolutely no way to prevent people from "returning" the game without actually unregistering. And really, who can't figure out whether a game is good or not from the demo? Isn't that the point?

Another problem is that an expert gamer might blow through the game in a month or so, and then return it for his money back.

It just changed, as evidenced by the fact that it's news. :P

But, umm...yeah. How exactly do you return shareware?

You don't have to be an expert gamer to complete a Spiderweb game in less than a year.

This is likely Jeff's latest method of combatting those idiots that decide it's easier to search the int3rn3t fer dose hackncrack outfits. I'd rather give him $25 or $30 than steal, knowing that if I got incredibly bored with the whole thing when I was 75% done I could just cheapskate it and get my money back.

Or this is just to encourage those borderline gamers to buy, since Jeff's Grand Cayman fund is a little low this year. Those MMPORG's must be costing him a fortune! :P

Probably the latter. It might encourage a borderline customer to buy. I imagine that very few customers would ever ask for their money back. For most gamers, $20 or $30 is not a very high price tag for a fairly long game.

That may not be true for Jeff's teenage (and preadolescent) audience, but they are likely ordering through parental credit cards, so refunds are not going to come their way easily, so they won't bother.

And even Tyranicus, I think, is intelligent enough to realize that he did have fun playing Avernum 4, despite its many flaws. The people who were really vehemently against it, didn't register it, from what I remember of those threads.

So now I can register A4 just to return it the next day. :P

More seriously, this is a very customer-friendly move for a software company. I am tempted to buy some Spidweb game just to support the company that is willing to offer money-back guarantee. Exile trilogy is now only 25$, so it might finally be time to get that CD. I might do it when/if registering Gf4.

So, Salmon, running out of things to spam about, has finally resorted to re-reading the 'about us' page and commenting on it. Fascinating.

Jeff's approach to piracy is already "people who won't pay will find a way to steal it anyway". So I'm guessing he isn't too unhappy about making it easier for these lot while at the same time making himself popular with his paying customers.

On the other hand, this turns his games into something just one step short of Donation Ware.

It's a big step, though. Some people who can afford to pay $25 for a shareware game might be tempted to get it for free if they could, but I expect few of these will be bothered to go through the banal rigmarole of falsely 'returning' the game in order to get that money back, once having parted with it.

Like most rebates, I'm sure it's predicated on the fact that most people don't put in the effort to get money back. Getting money back dishonestly would be even further. Besides, wouldn't everyone with enough of a conscience not to pirate the games feel filthy for robbing a shareware company?

—Alorael, who would be extremely pleased if Jeff only returned the money to those who came to his house, shook his hand, and looked him in the eye while complaining about the game. All who flinch or avert their eyes can be fed to Spider.

This is really just making explicit a policy that Jeff's apparently had in place for some time; he's already admitted that if someone complains enough he'll eventually offer them their money back to make them go away.

The policy only actually became official yesterday. There was a bit of agonizing on my part about how long the refund period would be. I eventually settled on a year, instead of three years. Though, honestly, if someone comes to me pissed off about a game they ordered 13 months ago, I would very likely give them their money back.

I'm not really worried about fraud. In the over ten years we've been running our business, I could count on my fingers the number of refund requests I've gotten that weren't related to a stolen credit card. Our customers are good people.

But apparently we steal credit cards. Or have our credit cards stolen.
