quote:The above quote interests me (Not in some peverted "I like killing llamas" way though). I was wondering where the idea of putting the $ sign after the money came from. I've always been taught that it goes before the sum of money. (eg: $10,000) What does everyone else think? -------------------- "When everything is coming your way, you're in the wrong lane." I put it in either spot. Since people generally say two dollars not dollars two, I can understand why the symbol might appear after the numbers. -------------------- The Knight Between Posts. Posts: 2395 | Registered: Friday, November 2 2001 08:00 |

$10,000 - Before number. £10,000 - Before number. ¥10,000 - Before number. quote: Usually, the symbol for the "base" unit of a particular currency goes before the amount. As to the placing of smybols for a "sub-unit" of a currency, I'm uncertain. For Australian (and American?) currency, the "¢" sign comes after the amount, I know that much, but I'm not familiar enough with foriegn currency as to where their "secondary" symbol, if any, goes. Hmm... In Italy we use Euros; a hundred Euros are 100?, so I think that the correct form are 10000$. -------------------- Download Geneforge 4: Rebellion You have 6 posts. In Holland its ?10.000, but you may also mwrite 10.000?. It doesn't look good, but you can do it. If you say "euros" and not "?" then its best to put it behind, so you get this: 10.000 Euros ?10.000 -------------------- Play and rate my scenarios: Where the rivers meet View my upcoming scenario: The Nephil Search: Escape. And if you're using the ISO 4217 international currency codes, you can put them either before or after the amount. So 100 AUD and AUD 100 both mean 100 Australian dollars. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

He certainly did. His departure is the reason I became a mod, so I remember it very well. :P I don't think he said he'd no longer post at all, though. Oh, that's what she meant? I thought she meant something like "I'm going on vacation" which was the reason I asked. -------------------- Play and rate my scenarios: Where the rivers meet View my upcoming scenario: The Nephil Search: Escape. No, Snafta, I meant magmadragoon, not Thuryl, so unless I didn't understand what Magmadrgoon said in one topic or an other, and she (Magmadragoon) is actually a he, then I apologize and you're right. However, I'm fairly certain Magmadragoon is a she, no? magmadragoon? -------------------- Play and rate my scenarios: Where the rivers meet View my upcoming scenario: The Nephil Search: Escape. Dikiyoba is fairly certain that MagmaDragoon is a guy. Oh, and congratulations on passing 2000 posts, Thralni. Edit: Somehow managed to hit "post reply" with only a half-typed post. In that case, I should apologize. I seem to have that often. Maybe it weas because you are Italian? I don't know. Ugh. My head hurts. I've been taught, rightly or wrongly, that $100 and 100$ are both correct, but that $100.00 is correct and 100.00$ is wrong. 99¢ looks better than ¢99, but I wouldn't swear to it. —Alorael, whose next question is why E isn't standard notation for scientific notation. 3.44E10 is much more compact, clear, and easy than 3.44 * 10^10. I think both forms are acceptable. It's just that having the sign in front of the number is by far the most widely used. Having it behind the number just looks more sloppy. -------------------- -ben4808 Posts: 3360 | Registered: Friday, June 25 2004 07:00 |

I can't swear to having seen a definitive statement of a rule, but I know that I've never seen a dollar sign come after a number or a cent sign come before except in the writing of the same sort of people who mess up "it's" and "its." -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. 99 cents, so 99¢. 100 dollars, but $100. [ Saturday, April 15, 2006 17:03: Message edited by: The Worst Man Ever ] Posts: 794 | Registered: Tuesday, October 11 2005 07:00 |

That is right in New Zealand anyway. Except our dollar sign has two vertical lines instead of one. [ Saturday, April 15, 2006 22:13: Message edited by: stranger ] -------------------- DONOR Fat Freddys Drop Shirow Miwa Posts: 1112 | Registered: Friday, July 19 2002 07:00 |
