On reconsideration...

More new scenarios have been coming out, and it looks like BoA may be on it's way to producing some really good scenarios in the future. It's not there yet, but it just may be.

It's true that I prefer the Exile engine, and I prefer BoE, and I don't see that changing. But BoA may still be good too in the future. IMO, most of the scenarios still aren't that great, but it still has a few good ones. The engine is a bit clunky, IMO as well. Small deduction for taking the 'holidays' away, I was a little disappointed with that.

It could reach being good, but it's not there yet. I'll change my rating to a 7.5.

Whose scenarios? If you mean mine, I didn't make any for BoA, and I never will. Well, if you've played my BoE scens, then.....well, that's a different story.

Scenarios aren't that good? They're just ports of the BoE scenarios, except for DwtD. If you mean the third-party scenarios, remember, the first batch of BoE third-party scenarios probably weren't too hot either.

It's what, two years since BoA came out? We don't have a Doom Moon II, Of Good And Evil, Election, Tatterdemalion, Farmhands!!, Forsaken, or Redemption yet.

(translation: On average, the early BoE scenarios are in fact much better.)

I agree mostly with Bain. The atmosphere of BoA and Avernum in general is somewhat counterproductive. BoE just feels better and the stories feel more enriching and engrossing in that medium. Call me irrational or whatever, but that's how I feel. 7.2

That was me. I don't think I can rate BoA right now. I think we just haven't seen enough of its potential yet. Anyway, I won't rate it, but I can say that I really enjoyed playing the pre-made scenarios, even the Za-Khazi Run. I enjoyed the thirs-party scenarios even more, but I do agree that we haven't had a true masterpiece yet. I don't really think BoA is dying, so we should get one at some point. All we have to do is make scenarios (don't expect me to start making one before at least three months, I have lots of problem with my computer right now), and be patient. Very patient. ;)

Powerful, but big and clunky. At least with BoE, anyone could make a scenario. With BoA, this is much more difficult. I doubt it will ever go anywhere for these reasons.

My first spiderweb game was Nethergate, and it was good, but by the time I had played through it I thought, 'wouldn't it be great to be able to make this yourself?'

I enjoy tinkering with the game far more than actually playing premade scenarios. When I found out about BoE I spent many hours just creating towns and walking about them. The reason BoA is superior is simply because there is FAR more to tinker with, giving it a huge replay value. For those who aren't dedicated, it can be frustrating, but for those who are it is hugely rewarding.

It has it's limitations, but overall it deserves a solid 8.5.

I didn't like the game very much, or the atmosphere.

You didn't like the engine? BoA has no atmosphere beyond whatever is present in each scenario. Judging it by VoDT, or even all Jeff's scenarios, in unfair and unkind.

—Alorael, who still doesn't want to rate BoA. It should be a 10, maybe a 9.5 for engine bugs, but it's just not easy enough to work with and consequently too short on scenarios. And he still is opposed to rating by engine. In conclusion, no rating.

Who are you talking to? Nobody here stated that their rating only included Jeff's scenarios. Third-party scenarios were taken into account into my rating, at least.

Let's see... I have not played BoE, so I will make no comparisons between the two. :P

The BoA editor can do a lot but it's fairly difficult (for me, at least) to work with. I miss level 3 haste acting on everyone (as a preset spell) but I have no real complaints with the engine. There are still some irredeemablely awful scenarios but by now they are outnumbered by the good and really good ones and it seems that many more good scenarios will be released in the future.

Dikiyoba gives it an 9.

Edit: Bolded score. And raised it.

C sharp, but some parts middle C. Works best when accessorized, but still needs a lot of support from the pit. I'll give a average rating of ... slightly better than a sharp stick in the eye.

It may be true that there are too few scenarios, but even half of the good user scenarios now available would make this one as big as one of the Avernum series.

Hell, TM's and Kel's works alone make it worth the price.

10.0. I feel that we can't score this with the average of all scenarios, but the score has to accumulate somehow - paying the same price for 10 good scenarios is better than 5. And since several scenarios are ranked with scores above 8 or even 9, I see no way this could be anything but a perfect ten.

I was countering Kyrek's cryptic comments.

—Alorael, who chooses complete... alliteration. That last part just didn't work no matter how he tried to work it.

Yeah, I can't believe I never posted in this.

10.0... for mostly the same reasons as Aran. BoA has basically infinite possibilities, and while some work has scraped the bottom of the barrel, a lot of what's out is excellent. Also, the next crop of scenarios looks to be excellent.

The engine is far more powerful, but still has some bugs that are never going to get adressed which is frustrating. More difficult to use, but there still seem to be a fair crop of people who know how to work the editor. We'll never see the sheer number of scenarios as in BoE, but we're starting to see just how far one can push the engine. Maybe, just maybe, this generation of designers will finally come into its own. -9.5-
