From an early spoiler to the upcoming expansion set of Magic: The Gathering called Guildpact:

Glittereye Nephilim
Creature - Nephilim R
When Glittereye nephilim deals combat damage to a player, draw that many cards.
1, discard a card : Glittereye nephilim get +1/+1 until end of turn.
2/2

Interesting....I wonder what the picture will look like? As far as I know this is the only Nephilim in Magic.

The Nephilim are also a Biblical creature. I believe they are a spawn of a human/angel couple.

Right, actually there is a discussion about this currently on one of the Magic boards and apparently the angel Nephi features prominently in the Mormon faith...so Nephil is perhaps a derivation from that.

However, I think Jeff has been asked about this before and has said that it's just coincidence, and that he came up with the name/term on his own.

EDIT: Here is a link to the Guildpact Spoiler discussion for those who are interested. The Nephilim card is in French, (un)fortunately. ;)

From someone much smarter than me:

"Nephilim are the children of angels and humans from Middle-East mythology and from Biblical and Akkadian texts."

hmmmm...

Actually it's the first-ever 4-color creature; one of each color of mana except white.

Why not look them up?

—Alorael, who doesn't know of any pre-Mormon Nephi. Since the nephilim date back to the Old Testament, it's quite possible that the etymology goes the other way around.

Wikipedia disagrees, and Google has an interesting debate on whether the angel was Nephi or Moroni.

All I can say about the Nephi issue is that I've got a friend who is Mormon and has talked about Nephi before, as part of their faith. I have no idea what the mainstream Mormon community does or does not believe.

Back to the original topic, I found a picture of the card. It....sort of.....looks like a Nephilim!

EDIT: A headless Nehilim at least. Well at least it's orange. Sort of. ;)

The image posted immediately above your post makes it quite clear that it is not, in fact, a Pokémon card.

—Alorael, who was unaware that nephilim had tails that made them look a little bit like cat-nagas.

What he meant was that the King James version of the bible, which we use, does not specifically mention the word "Nephilim". It does, however, refer to them. Comparison between that Wikipedia article's version of Genesis 6:1 and the King James version of the bible shows they are basically the same except for tense, phrasing, and the use of the word "nephiliim", though both refer to children of the "sons of God" and the "daughters of men".

I found an article, which seems to say that the Mormon church's take on the matter is that "sons of God" didn't mean angels, but rather referred to those who worshiped God and the "daughters of men" were those who did not.

I do not recall nor was I able to find any reference to any of the handful of Nephis appearing as an angel. Also, I did not find anything placing any particular significance upon the similarities in the name "Nephi" and the word "nephilim" or any other connection between the two.

Wow... that looks nothing like a Nephil. Though Alo's cat-nage hybrid idea sounds about right.

As an infrequent MtG player, however, it looks like an interesting card. And rather hard to explain, flavor- and cost-wise.

EDIT: Now that I think of it, it looks like a hybrid between Jabba the Hut and an Avernum Nephil.

Wizards has been trying to consolidate creature types. Falcon becomes bird and so forth. So the nephlim creature type must be pretty major. Wizards will probably be coming out with at least a few more Nephlim.

When we have a larger sample of the shape of Nephlim, we'll have a better idea of what exactly they look like in the Magic universe.

They have Sliths, too. Now that I think about it, it's getting sort of suspicious.

I know Wizards has been messing with creature types, but how are Nephilim and Slith helping to consolidate creature types? I mean, there are only 6 slith in the game (all fairly recent additions), and there are no nephilim/nepharim anywhere in the game. This makes the first one.

If I see one Vahnatai appear in the next expansion, I quit.

Wizards has been attempting to consolodate creature types, mainly dealing with cards in the older sets. However there are plenty of unique or very limited creatures left such as our beloved Slith and Nephilim, and other odd stuff such as Wumpuses (or Wumpi, but that discussion was had long ago...).

The Slith are all relatively good creatures and Slith Firewalker saw quite a bit of tournament play. Slith Firewalker also sort of looks like a Slith from the avernum games (as does Slith Predator).

As far as the possibility of other Avernum creature types emerging, the new MTG Universe has recently (as of the Mirrodin set) been opened up to new planes other than Dominaria where things started. Hence the last three blocks have all been on new worlds, and there have been rumors of "aliens" appearing in either this or the next block. We shall see.

It's probably all just coincidence but remember that Wizards' R&D is staffed by gamers just as nerdy...er...I mean...cool.. as the Avernum fan-crowd so they are probably influenced to some extent by common interests.

EDIT: I just found out that there are to be a cycle of Nephilim in Guildpact. Since they are 4-color creatures, there are likely to be 5 in total. The newly revealed one is:

Yore-Tiller Nephilim - (has white in mana cost)
Creature - Nephilim (R)
Whenever Yore-Tiller Nephilim attacks, return target creature card from your graveyard to play tapped and attacking.
2/2

They all seem kind of mediocre as far as Magic creatures go but the flavor and art are cool at least. It would be pretty neat to see decks running around with both Slith and Nephilim, however...

Well that card just put me back to work at my ninja deck, I was beginning to think it old fashioned.
EDIT: I looked it up on the "orb of insight" and the word nephilim appears 17 times on card names and rule boxes.

I think the Orb counts flavor text also, so 17 might only represent 5 cards...but more would be cool!

Also, the religious discussion about the implications of the term "Nephilim" is starting to heat up. For those who are interested in debating Biblical references, check out this thread about the origins of the word.

First off, Mormon = Christian, but Christian != Mormon. There are many, many types of Christians, and Mormons are among the most laughed at of them all by people who are not Mormons. Combine it with poor typing skills, poor grammar, and blissfully ignorant youth, and you get a situation in which TM (an atheist, by the way) laughs at you.

Just trying to shed some light upon the situation.
