I'm sure this has been thought about before, but as I inserted my Avernum CDs to, once again, do away with hours of my time to finish them, how cool it would be to have them on a handheld system like a DS or PSP. I know I would buy it. How hard would it be to do?

I have to wonder why we don't have a FAQ and it doesn't include this.

That depends. If it comes painted onto the side of a very expensive yacht, he might consider it.

—Alorael, who would like to know whether the Exile games will be updated with new graphics and stuff. They're getting pretty old, and a facelift would really do them a world of good.

lol. I think it would be pretty cool too. You could just play the latest scenarios even when you're away from home. It wouldn't take that much extra time and money, would it?

Think of it this way:

Would you rather have Avernum 4, Geneforge 3, and Blades of Geneforge, or Avernum 1, 2, and 3 for the Palm?

I hope you realize that the DS is owned by Nintendo, therefore everything on it is owned by Nintendo. I also hope you realize that the console game world is much different than the PC game world.

To make a game on a console, you must: get the rights (expensive), get the development tools (from the corporation, very expensive), have them publish/edit it (expensive), have them produce it (expensive), and them sell it (with you getting maybe 30% of profit).

In other words, independent game-makers and consoles don't mix well.

I know that you want to be cool and add to the smackdown, but you're wrong. All software developed for Nintendo platforms is not owned exclusively by Nintendo; just think of any of the dozens of titles that are cross-platform (e.g. most fighting games, Megaman franchise, Sega titles), as well as any of the well-known third party developers that obviously aren't owned by Nintendo (e.g. Capcom, Konami).

On your second point, I would argue that the two worlds are growing closer together all the time, as console systems are matching/surpassing the capabilities of PCs. Consider several prominent PC-console cross platform titles such as Knights of the Old Republic or Halo. Hell, Final Fantasy VII was even released for PC years ago, and if you want to go even further back, Ultima III and IV made it from the PC to the NES, a system far less capable than today's handhelds.

Please think before you post.

For the record, I agree that the premise for this topic is dumb, and not worth speculating on.

Hah. Now, now... I know you'd like to "lay the smack down", but you are wrong. Think before you post.

While I was only using Nintendo as an example, we'll stay with it. Nindendo owns rights to the games put on it's consoles, that's how they even get there. I was really thinking more of Microsoft and the XBox when I made that comparison, but whatever.

And secondly, cross-platform gaming has nothing to do with anything I said. I'm sorry.

Nintendo owns the rights to license, or grant its "seal of approval" on particular products, but it doesn't "own the rights" to the games put onto its consoles, and the cross-platform issue has everything to do with it. Consider Mortal Kombat Deception. This game was developed for every platform under the sun, and I assure you, Midway, not Nintendo, "owns the rights" to it. While Midway may have reduced some of the edgier aspects of their game to honor Nintendo's reputation as a more family-oriented system, it still likely owes little to them. If Nintendo "owned the rights" to every game on its platform, then why would it allow cross-platform games at all? It certainly doesn't for its own brands - Mario, Metroid, Zelda.

Exactly every day, except in special cases like when I am away from all internet connections.

—Alorael, who gets to change his name daily because he is especially special. The same can be said for the other regular name changers, like Aran.

Because he's not ever going to get a custom title, according to Drakey.

Anyway, speaking of cross-platforming, I've tried out emulators of, say, SNES games, and they work great. Has anyone else tried this?

I'm special? Woot!

I guess I'll stick to a name once I'm through with this poem though. :P

www.tapwave.com a handheld that could play exile/avernum, and is free to get your game on it (exept for the time to email them)

Zodiac specs
480x320 screen
200mhz proscesor (it sounds lame, but the ATI imageon graphics accelerator helps)
128mb internall 2sd slots (capable to hold 4.1gigs, if ya bought two 2g sds)
bluetooth for multi-player
yamaha sound card, toushscreen and an analog joystic.
Made in 2003, its a bit outdated to to the (coming 2006) Zodiac3, unless tapwave goes to oem in which case it'd have a diff name/company, but stil be sw33t.

Yay! Someone here that likes the Zodiac besides me! Did you find these forums from this topic? I must warn you, advertising is against the rules here, and your posts about the Zodiac seem like advertising to me, and bringing up dead topics is frowned upon. Also, there will be no Zodiac3, as Tapwave is indeed going to OEM.
