At first glance, I'd say E's all around, but some people might have a problem with all the killing. You have to admit there's tons of good ole-fashioned slaughtering going on, but it's so primitively rendered that they might just manage to get away with it. The angry christian fundamentalists might have a problem with all the scary monsters and demons running around, unless, perhaps, you inform them that you (usually) kill them off... Do you think Jeff should get his games prefessionally evaluated and given ratings at all? Would a very official and legit-looking rating on a game make it more appeasing? Any other related questions you can think of? -------------------- Check out the DIARY, why doncha? It won't bite. Probably. "We were heart companions, We were companions in the woods, We were fellows of the same bed, Where we used to sleep the balmy sleep. Man, i just hate these "angry christian fundamentalists" , they just dont know what they are talking about, im christian myself, but the onle seemingly christian thing about me is that i dont say "Oh my god", and that i pray sometimes. I dont remember the ESRB system, but i would say 12+, maby 13+ . THEY DONT KNOW WATH THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT, AND THEY A JUST MAKIN FOOLS OF DEMSELVES! -------------------- MDNZZZ ZMMMBIS WBLOONZ 33111-CRUSADER-4849 Posts: 662 | Registered: Friday, September 13 2002 07:00 |

I'd say they get "E"s, because the games aren't really gory or anything, besides the tiny bit of blood left on the ground after killing a monster. Also, my Heroes Chronicles games are rated "E" for "Animated Violence", which is all that's in SW games. The only thing the ESRB might have a problem with is Skribbane in E3 and A3. I don't think a rating on SW games would look very good. Don't boxed games usually only get ratings? -------------------- The Club of All Chance Forums I was once member #2475, but then my account was deleted because of a bug. I'd say T. They have animated violence, the Exiles had quite a bit of profanity (and I hate Jeff for bowdlerizing the Avernums), and some mature themes. Then again, ESRB ratings only apply to shelf games, so there. -------------------- In a word, gay. --Bob the Impaler Posts: 2367 | Registered: Friday, June 27 2003 07:00 |

For a quick reference for those posting here's the list: eC-Early Childhood (This really only applies to kiddy games) E- Everyone (Little or no violence, maybe a little profanity. Think Nintendo) T- Teen (An average game, most shelf games fall into this catagory) M- Mature (Think Grand Theft Auto, violence, sexuality, lots of profanity, etc) A- Adult (I've never seen one of these. Pretty much porno games I would imagine.) -------------------- Don't ask the Oracle unless you're willing to get the slurred drunken truth. Posts: 24 | Registered: Monday, November 3 2003 08:00 |

quote:The 'angry Christian fundamentalists' are not concerned with the presence of demons so much as the idea that if they're in too many computer games, the whole concept of demons being what they are in Christian theology (ie, fallen angels, and very much more powerful than any computer game I've seen implies in that there shouldn't be a way to even hurt them without reference to God) is trivialised to the point where people don't see demons for the threat they are. I've never quite seen the logic in that as valid, but I can see where they're coming from, at least... -E- -------------------- Let them eat cake! Polaris Boards: The System is Up. Perennially. I'd go with T-13+ for Spiderweb games. -------------------- "He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster... when you gaze long into the abyss the abyss also gazes back into you." -Friedrich Nietzsche "There is no dodging the quad laser." -Ugnagnok Posts: 469 | Registered: Thursday, November 14 2002 08:00 |

I prefer the way Garzy went out in E2 over A2, by the way. The image is much more vivid -------------------- In a word, gay. --Bob the Impaler Posts: 2367 | Registered: Friday, June 27 2003 07:00 |

The obsession some fundies have with the demonic suggests an unhealthy preoccupation with evil when they should be celebrating all the rest of God's Creation. At least this would cheer them up and take that glazed, starey look out of their eyes. They really do need to sort themselves out before running around censuring everyone else. quote:Very well put. If a person posesses the cognizance to play the relatively complex spiderweb games, then they have the maturity to deal with the content and issues presented therein. And yeah, it did miff me that Jeff went through and censored a lot of the Avernum series from Exile. If you're the kind of person who will be offended by a few dirty words, then there is little chance that you would be playing the Avernum series at all anyways. ---Your censored maniac, Necris Omega -------------------- Sanity is a relative concept. Not that I'm saying in any way that this should be a factor in deciding the rating of the games, but some conservatives could be offended by the homosexual references to Nancy and (I forgot her girlfriend's name) in A1 and A2. -------------------- who? It is a typical trait of reactionaries to believe that not looking at something causes it to go away. Therefore, removing references to homosexuality, drug use, social violence, and so on will reduce them in society, and sex-ed is counterproductive. T, then, I guess... I had forgotten about the lesbians, otherwise I would say E. Actually... now that I think about it, does it ever come out and say that they're lesbians? I'm pretty sure it's all implied... if so, maybe E. The newer games, at least; maybe the Exile series is different. -------------------- And though the musicians would die, the music would live on in the imaginations of all who heard it. -The Last Pendragon TEH CONSPIRACY IZ ALL Les forum de la chance. I'm reasonably sure I saw some profanity in E2 when that women in that 1 town tells you where you can find some alchemy ingredient. And some more light profanity elsewhere. I think it's stupid that twe make you have to be a certain age to buy certain games. Thanks to the internet, we can find far worse stuff that on any game, but thankfully you can't fully regulate the content of the internet. Sidenote: After being suspended for using saying hell in 1 of my classes, I want to kill all anti-freedom of speach people. Nothing says "we want to prevent another school shooting here" like punishing people excessively for the most insignificant things possible" Anyway. I wouldn't trust any rating system being controled by overly conservative zealots. Posts: 1918 | Registered: Sunday, October 13 2002 07:00 |

It is only strongly implied that the two women are lesbians in Avernum 3 (I have not played A1 or A2). All they say is that they were very close for a very long time on the surface, too close for the Empire to approve of, or something like that. It is not said straight out that they are lesbians, but the implication that this is indeed the case is very strong. -------------------- "Let a man find himself, in distinction from others, on top of two wheels with a chain- at least in a poor country like Russia- and his vanity begins to swell out like his tires. Hey! Sir David's saying stupid things again! *activates SahBot* YOUNG CHILDREN SHOULD BE SHIELDED FROM INNUENDO WHICH THEY CANNOT UNDERSTAND AND WILL NOT EVEN RECOGNIZE AND IF THEY DO RECOGNIZE/UNDERSTAND IT IT'S TOO LATE THEN NOW ISN'T IT????? THE FACT THAT LESBIANS EXIST SHOULD IMMEDIATELY MAKE GAMES HAVE A HIGHER RATING BECAUSE LITTLE KIDS WILL ALL TURN INTO HOMOS AND/OR DYKES IF THEY HEAR REFERENCES TO HOMOSEXUALITY IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM [ Tuesday, November 11, 2003 18:06: Message edited by: Conspiracy Duck ] -------------------- You are my precious thing Thing of speed and beauty, You are my precious thing As long as you remain beneath me -- Big Black Posts: 999 | Registered: Friday, June 27 2003 07:00 |

Calm yourself, Djur. The question in the topic is what ratings we think SW games would get if the ESRB rated them, not which ones we think they should get. I'm inclined to disagree with Sir David, though. I doubt a couple of throwaway lines of conversation would change the rating. Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

Its not like I turned in to a gay the first time som bully tricked a LOOSER(Not me) to enter a gayporn site at my school (Everybody was looking and laughing, including me), people react too bad! Bu my gues is stil at 12+ or 13+ because of the refs and animated violence, and sometimes grossy popups. -------------------- MDNZZZ ZMMMBIS WBLOONZ 33111-CRUSADER-4849 Posts: 662 | Registered: Friday, September 13 2002 07:00 |

Probably T. I started playing Exile III when i was, um, 10 or 9, kinda hard to remember. I actualy understood it, and i am from Norway too. But when we are talking about learning words and stuff, you heard the english knowledge that italians have? ARRRR is the best word i can find for it, "Hey, you know the way to the train station?", "Qe sista les condore pasa comprende?", "Er, stasiona il trano?", "Le sista con destra pilto conlo sinistre quaso le tislonto!", "Oh, gratzie, you really helped us!". We found the train station two hours later, if there had been directions on signs and stuff, and the italian man could speak english, it would propably have taken ten minutes. Fun. -------------------- MDNZZZ ZMMMBIS WBLOONZ 33111-CRUSADER-4849 Posts: 662 | Registered: Friday, September 13 2002 07:00 |
