As a test to the Swedish postal system (I live in Sweden), I'd give one dollar to every person in China and get them to buy a postcard and send it to me. -------------------- I think this is really wonderful. Posts: 147 | Registered: Tuesday, October 18 2005 07:00 |

VCH, even if it is the joint responsibility of the rich and the poor to get the poor into a better situation, the point is that the rich are the ones who have the power to do this, not the poor. That's perhaps why most of the emphasis is put on them. And the worst thing is when the rich agree to work to help the poor somehow, but only on their own special conditions. (With the intention of limiting the amount of power the poor will ever have.) [ Sunday, December 11, 2005 23:13: Message edited by: Thin Air ] -------------------- I think this is really wonderful. Good :) , as it still sounds American not to use the and. I was also thinking of 'A Hundred and One Dalmatians'... not that it must be right just because the book is called that, but I've never heard any complaints about it. Generally, in Europe (so in other languages than English too), a milliard is 1000 x 1,000,000 and a billion is 1,000,000 x 1,000,000. Yes but who decides what is wrong? I know there are language boards and so on in some countries which come up with lots of rules, and there are also grammar books, but grammar books seem to record the language as it is, not dictate how it should be (at least they ought to). Not all grammar does make logical sense; English is proof enough of that. In fact the most commonly used words and expressions in most languages tend to be the ones that change the most over time, and so vary from what was once 'correct' (eg the fact that the verb 'to be' is irregular in many languages, since it is used more than any other verb). -------------------- I think this is really wonderful. Why is it wrong to say 'one hundred and one'? Or where did you learn this? To me it sounds like American English to say it without the and. Or if not American it sounds a bit funny... I would always say it with the and, and I think people around me do too. (Of course, we could all be wrong. But if something is used enough in a language, doesn't it eventually become 'correct'?) -------------------- I think this is really wonderful. A polite request. When A4 is released and everyone starts talking about it, please will you make it VERY CLEAR in the topic title or something that you're talking about A4? Some of us don't have our nice macs with us at the moment and won't be able to start playing it for several months... I couldn't STAND coming across lots of spoilers without realising, and I don't want to be tiptoeing around General for ages and ages. Appreciate your understanding. -------------------- I think this is really wonderful. Posts: 147 | Registered: Tuesday, October 18 2005 07:00 |

Well, WHY was the little woollen sheep the best present ever? Or is it too personal? :) My friends all live far away in different countries. Just looking for general tips. What about the very worst present? For me, that would definitely be soon after my parents' divorce, when they both got me the same set of books for Christmas. Oyoyoyoy. Sorry, didn't mean to be too tragic. 8) Posts: 147 | Registered: Tuesday, October 18 2005 07:00 |

Forgive my ignorance, but can someone explain what an 'engine' actually is/does regarding these games? I can see the obvious differences in appearance between Avernum and Geneforge, and I assume that's to do with the engine, and now that there's a new one for A4 everyone is discussing how this will affect how different the game will be from previous ones. Is it some sort of 'blueprint'... or something comparable to an operating system, so that comparing A3 to A4 is a bit like comparing OS 9 to OS X? (No need to explain what all the differences are; I guess that's what half this thread is about.) Well clearly A4 is already too far along the road for Jeff to incorporate people's ideas now (didn't he say he started writing it over a year ago?), but it's still nice to speculate about things people want in new games. And I expect A4 will have lots of cool stuff that people haven't really thought of, so there'll be lots to keep us occupied. My guess is, it'll be ace. (Though admittedly I'm not a highly critical gamer.) Okay, so I did it. I gave in and registered. Been a wanderer for a while now, and it's very amusing so I decided to join in. Before anyone says it, I didn't have much left for those turtles; a blue dog ran off with my sanity quite some time ago. Nice to meet you all! Posts: 147 | Registered: Tuesday, October 18 2005 07:00 |
