After re-reading these posts I can safely say that there will be many whose children have extremely thick foreheads from their parents having beaten them against the keyboard, if indeed it is true that certain practices can cause genetic changes downstream.

Apologies extended for offtopicness.

Read the latest issue of Climbing magazine. Good article on the mental cost of falling, having fallen two years ago and break bones reminded me of the cost of our hobbies.

Lord Gardener, it is obvious by the smirking self congratulatory nature of the postings by the drooling oldbies and their posturing of exclusivity that the glorious revolution needs to come sooner rather than later.

If you like military strategy games try one of the various 5-star iterations by SSI - like Pacific General or Panzer General.

For what its worth, this topic seemed to start out regarding long distance running and what the Greeks were capable of. We've proved in modern times athletes are capable of exceeding recorded histories triumphs. I believe the same would occur for rowing Trieres. Course, modern humanhas the time and leisure to train specifically to exceed the best there was, the best there is and the best there evere will be.

The advantage the Greeks would have would be in practice, as in practice makes perfect.

The wikipedia article seems pretty solid.

I've read other Wiki articles that seem pretty solid, but gloss over or miss entirely debate on a subject, leading the reader to believe its settled fact when the truth is there is still much discussion occurring.

I lean to SoT with respect to assumptions on the veracity of claims on history. SoT, my issue was more to my reading of your notes as to not giving any credibility to historians assumptions.

Case in point, my readings of Trieres seems to be compelling that they were something like what has been proposed whereas my readings of your posts suggested that we had no clue what they looked like.

It could be you'be been playing devil's advocate - or we have a difference of opinion on how convincing the historians arguments are.

I agree that the actual design of trieres is not known with certainty, but the proposed designs are workable, have considerable basis in reality and are quite plausible.

Sot,

individually, you have tried to poke holes in the evidence that does exist for triremes, but you have not looked at how individual pieces of evidence reinforce each other. For instance, you called into question equipment lists, and the boat houses. Well, the equipment lists were found in the boat houses, reinforcing the use of the houses for triremes. You suggest that they may have been atypical or outmoded, but there is no evidence to sugggest that is true (no bays built for larger triremes where the housing was built of wood and disappeared for instance). Rather, when the evidence points in one direction it is not logical to assume something else entirely.

Conjecture without evidence easy to make. Perhaps they made artificial harbours out to sea to house extremely large boats and these structures were made out of wood. There doesn't seem to be evidence to indicate this wasn't possible.

quote:
If a premise is doubtful, it does not make sense to pretend it's rock solid just in order to have a discussion that presumes it. If the closest thing we have to a fact is still a long way off it, acknowledge that, and discuss the evidence and its weakness.

What evidence exists to make the premise doubtful as to what a trireme looks like? What evidence indicates the facts are a long way off? What evidence exists for a greatly different type of ship?

SoT, you got me curious so I looked around on the net and apparently in 1996 Mr. Morrison came out with a new book discussing oared boats. I also found this site, The Trireme Trust , which used what evidence there was to create a mockup of an actual trireme, 37 meters long. The pictures of teh boat are quite cool.

It also has links to several sites, one of which is course notes discussing the evolution of ships. Quite interesting to explore around - discusses things like the usefulness of iconography and its weaknesses as evidence, etc.

Heres a photo from the site:

Don't underestimate ET's intelligence. The list is not necessarily in chronological order of planned deaths. After all, some are easier to plan than others, and when opportunity knocks one can always open the door early.

That is, I'd be willing to bet a beer that no-one really knows the size or design of the ships used in any particular famous ancient sea battle. The actual evidence we have would be maybe a couple of weathered paintings or carvings, whose relevance and accuracy would be hard to establish; and at most a couple of written texts, probably composed long after the battle from earlier sources that are now lost, and probably not giving much detail at that. Now it might be that I'm wrong; perhaps we do have convincing evidence about some ancient fleet. But I figure my odds are worth risking a beer on. Ancient history is a tough, tough field.

The archeological evidence for the size and shape of triremes includes the Lenormant Relief (iconographic evidence), ancient harbours, excavations of ship sheds (giving size limitations), inscribed equipment lists for said ships and the bronze rams.

Other evidence includes limitations place upon design by the laws of physics.

There is also a punic warship that was discovered in 1971.

Oh, and apologies for the double post. And also for suggesting that Greeks used slave labor. Checked into that and determined it was free labor powering their warships.

Kel, there are freaks out there even more worse than the Greeks fools (and even much worse than the English just above used. Ultramarathoners - some races are 3100 km in length (record is just over 41 days) or 6 day races (record is just over 1000 km in that time) - see Wiki - ultras
