Currently, version 1.0 of the Avernum 4 for the Mac is available from the public FTP site. Spiderweb's main page doesn't yet acknowledge the release.

I've asked this before but didn't get an answer. Which emulator is the most likely to run it decently?

When Geneforge 3 came out, it was the same situation: somebody reported on the file being available for download from the FTP site before the official announcement.

I'd rather have waited for an official announcement, quite frankly. Makes it a more of a grand occasion rather than an "underhanded" one.

I think I'll follow *i's adivce and download it when it's really done.

For the love of god wait until the official release. That could be an incomplete version, and if it's the same as the last version Jeff handed us testers, it probably is.

Calm yourself... it'll be there for Christmas.

I'm deeply sorry for your operating system's inadequacies... but that's for another discussion in another time.

Anyway, it'll be out soon (at least for us Mac users), and then all of us can finally share our boundless wisdom about the workings of Avernum IV. And believe me, we've amassed quite a bit.

Initial impressions - pretty much what I expected, feels like more of the same but updated a bit. Somewhat annoying that there are only 2 slith and nephilim graphics...if I wanted a party of all one or the other, I could see a problem. Most of the streamlined things, like the elimination of arrows and the big "?" by NPCs I like, though I could see it annoying a few people. The circle for area of effect spells looks cool but I think a grid system like in Exile would do a better job of showing who is in the radius and who isn't. Overall, about what I expected so far (only played a round a bit).

Huh? What bug by NPCs? I've played through this whole freakin' thing, and I know of no bug "?" by NPCs...

The "the elimination of" from earlier in the sentence still applies to "the bug "?"" as well as "arrows". Thus, there's no bug "?" because it has been eliminated. :P

I'm hoping to download it on one of the macs at school... he he. If the Admin catches me, I'll lie and say it's "research for English" or something. I'm good at lying. Or am I? Ack, it's one of those thingy-majiggies...

Bring on tomorrow!

Nevermind, I'm just confused...

The automap notes are the big ?'s on the automap screen in A4. You know, the things you click on that tell you what each thing in the town is.

For example, "Your Quarters" in Fort Monastery has an automap note.

He was saying that he likes the addition of automap notes.

Okay, good. Now I understand what was being said. I thought I'd missed some unpleasant bug the first time through...

Spiderweb games and the Marathon games are the only times in all my gaming history I remember being able to enjoy a good game before the Windoze people got their mitts on it. Let us minority Mac users enjoy our rare privilege.

I'm patiently waiting for Civilization IV for Mac right now (tap...tap...tap).

I jumped the gun and downloaded it instead of waiting for the official release. Is there a problem with that version? If so, can I transfer my save file over to a new version?

You can transfer your save files. Go to Avernum 4 Files and transfer the save folders.
