Here's the issue (correct me if I'm wrong, folks): If you design a PC graphic, you are best off using the default, Avernum III chairs when you design the PC sitting down.

If you use another type of chair, the chair will morph from the default chair to the chair you designed when the PC sits down. This will look strange.

The alternative is to design a chair graphic to be inserted into the scenario the PC will be used in. The weakness to this is if people want to use the PC graphic in other scenarios, they must also use your chair graphic - or suffer the Morphing Chair Syndrome (MCS).

So, you are probably best off just using the default chair for PC graphics - at least for now.

Just wondering, but why does it say that the punk is a "non-standard" PC graphic? Is that a reference to its distinctly modern nature?

The punk graphic can't sit, thus, it is not standard. I think.
Vengeful Shade, there are other chairs, but you can't sit in them. They're just obstructions. I know there's one that has four legs and a purple cushion.

You're so smart! Upon reading this a booted up A3 (which I haven't played in a while) and searched for chairs that I couldn't sit in. I found them... end of story. Yes, they exist.

edit: For the Louvre... on the "Current Records" thing you just put on there, could you make that text something other than black? Like Red or Green, something that stands out. It was kinda hard to see. Thanks!

Put the current record count in blue.

Question about Items - I see most people are submitting an item graphic with two views. Is this needed? If someone could go to my BoA graphics Design page (accessible via the Louvre now) and check what I've written on Items for technical accuracy, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

Two views may or may not be strictly neccessary. In the A3 graphics, there are usually two views, one for the item in a player's inventory (or in a container, or the pick-up box), and one for the item on the ground. The ground view can be shared between multiple graphics, so if a suitable image already exists, that view is not neccessary. Also, it may be possible to use the same graphic for both views.

However, in general, I would consider it a good idea to provide both views.

The Louvre seems to be innaccesible - I get a 403 error. Anyone else having problems?

Edit: It seems to be okay now.

Possible, but unlikely, as this is a Penn State server maintained 24/7 and hit by thousands of users constantly - I would have heard something. More likely the pipeline between here and you was broken.

As for the graphics themselves, I'd suggest using JPG instead of GIF files. GIF files only support 256 colors where as Avernum uses true colors. Therefore converting the graphics from BMP to GIF can cause some loss of detail, using JPG images instead would prevent this.

Conversion to GIF produces no appreciable loss of detail in any graphic I've submitted, and in some cases has actually slightly improved the appearance of the graphic.

Oh, and my copy of A3 seems to use 256 color bitmaps.

BTW, Brett, did you recieve the latest batch of graphics I sent in?

DBR

Edit: Should have noted that the graphics programs I have do odd things with JPEGs - I can't seem to force no compression, and the compression alters white space to off-white.

You CAN submit graphics in JPG format if you want to.

Yes, I've received your gaphics, DBR - but I will probably not process them until this weekend. :(

Actually, JPG images are bad for this type of graphic, and they are easily distorted. If the background becomes off-white, which it tends to do, the entire graphic is thrown off. PNGs are the best, but they're big, and I don't thing Brett likes them.

PNGs can actually be much more efficient than GIFs and JPGs; less so for smaller, more detailed graphics such as those in Avernum, though. Also, they can't display properly in everyone's browser.

Brett, did you get the Geneforge rips I submitted? Sorry, I accidentally sent three emails. The first one you should ignore, the second one has the pics, and the third has the data.

Got 'em! I'm slow to place them online due to work load. Should be soon.

Great job, just a few comments:
Flame Vent, not Flame Event

Vahnatai Runes and Barriers are actually both
sets of animated terrains (The vahnatai runes are actually the runes in the game, just removed from the associated floor pattern, and with several color swaps.)

Potion racks should be includable as is - They're simply modified bookcases, and the bookcases work with no problems.

Lava Pit seems to have started appearing under NPC - May have been there before, not sure.

Purple Spirit Warrior is also appearing under NPC - it's a monster graphic.

Sword Emblem and Ogre Statue are terrain graphics, not items.

It might be a good idea to add the option of sorting by date added. That way, people can easily see which items are the new ones. Or you could just add a "new" flag that you can add to the search.

Oh yeah, and the link to my glaahk picture is broken. You misspelled the file name and the label as "glaakh."

Thanks for the debug - should be all fixed. The sort by date thing will take longer to program.
