I've been having a heck of a time doing much of anything on here recently. Every time I do something even as simple as try to read a topic, I, 8 times out of 10, end up either running up against a 500 Internal Server Error or a blank page. I noticed that there was an unusual number of ISEs yesterday as well.

Are we due for another purge? Is UBB just giving out? Or am I the only one experiencing this?

I get the same thing. I hope UBB just dies soon enough. Then we move somewere more stable.

Yeah, I'm getting errors, too. I remember back in the day, when errors were unheard of, and ISE's didn't even exist.

My idea to fix it? Delete all accounts over about number 7500.

The posts don't go away. At least they seriously shouldn't. Plus well over half our members are bots and only about 5-10% of us still post. Maybe 100 or so active members out of well over ten thousand.

Total purge, delete and archive everything and force everyone to create new accounts.

Spiderweb Software should declare bankruptcy and Jeff Vogel should fake his own death and move to Buenos Aires under an assumed identity. All servers should be taken down, erased, and then subjected to dissolution by alkahest.

[Edit: I can get this thing right the first time.]

Why can't they simply place one of those "type in the numbers in the picture" security measures in the registration page? As for me, I haven't noticed any unusual amount of server errors recently.

Captchas actually aren't very good. They don't always filter out the bots, and sometimes they tell you you're wrong when you're not (like Myspace).

They've always been there, just waiting for a chance to strike. At first they only attacked one at a time...then they got smarter...

Checked my account number so I'm fine with the 7500 cutoff. Maybe 8000 as an even number.

Or we could delete all members that don't make useful posts at a certain level. It'll force some members not to constantly spam.

The troubles seem to have no pattern since they occur at times when there is little activity.

I think it would make sense to delete all accounts with zero postcount, because they're more likely than not bots.

Half our members are not bots. I know there have been more lately, but I'm sure there are still loads of users who register and don't post (or don't post for several years). The links from the sw web pages attract a lot of lurking game players.

Why do you people make fun about such serious matters? It feels so...so freaking amature!

And I know I've probably spelled that wrong, so now you will all tactfully avoid my point.

Yeah. It's much better to ask a simple trivia question, like "What is Hillary Clinton's first name?" (No, really. I'm aware of a blog that uses precisely that question to keep bots out, and it seems to work perfectly.)

Of course, that's not going to happen either, because SW doesn't have the resources to modify UBB.

I did say around 7500. You've released a BoA scenario too, so that goes in your favour. Note that not all BoX designers will be spared.

Perhaps forcing registration to require the purchase of a spiderweb product...

Immature or amateur?

Either way, what the heck is so serious about this thread, or the subject matter? So, um, the forum software is crappy. So what? Really. So? You tell us what makes this a grave and serious matter, convince me, and I will henceforth treat it with the gravity it deserves.

Armature.

—Alorael, who doesn't take this thread seriously because this is a very old issue that perennially plagues the boards and then goes away and because Jeff has expressed a distinct distaste for having to expend time or money on the forums. Migration requires at least one of the two.
