I read a rather interesting biography concerning him once.

Chess is a great game, too bad he's dead.

How do they know? I thought he disappeared a long time ago.

I have a couple of chess books written by him. He was a real genius of the game.

I have a chess program called (appropriately enough) Chessmaster. I once played several games against an AI in the program based on his playing style, and (to my shock) nearly won one of them.

Emulating his playing style is one thing, but duplicating his playing ability is quite another. It is true, you can train a computer to play a formidable game of chess, but it does not think like a human can. So I would not put too much stock in beating a computer trained to play like Bobby Fischer. :P

Bobby Fischer, while a great chess player, was also an eccentric, paranoid jerk full of vitriol for any group he hated at the time. Some of his comments against Jews would make Mein Kampf look like mild criticism. So while should admire his ability to play chess like few others, his personal life is far less admirable.

I'm most grateful to him for Chess960, which makes chess fun for me even as someone unwilling to put the time and effort into memorizing standard openings.

Wow. Less than three weeks into 2008 and we have already lost Edmund Hillary and Bobby Fischer. This does not bode well for the rest of the year.

It's either something to do with Undead, or he confused you with Tyran.

I'm not saying that no one died last year, it just seems that we're reaching a time when many of the heroes of earlier generations are reaching the end of their years, without many new role models to take their place. I am neither a chess player or a mountain climber, but Hillary and Fischer were both idols for many people. Personally, Vonnegut's death bothered me more than either of them. I just find myself wondering who's next.

The Ephesos thing may have to do with Episode 4

Maybe the Ephesos thing is about undead somehow? I dunno.

The line about people dying who had never died before is a quote from somewhere, but I'm not sure where, and from what I do recall of the original context it was pretty grim humor (Ireland in the potato famine). But yeah, the point was that everyone dies, so for every generation there comes a time when its heroes die, and of course no-one can fill their shoes.

Nevertheless you may be right, that this time there really has been a drop or a change in the production of role models. Evel Knievel went a while ago, too, right? Maybe it's just ignorance on my part, but perhaps it does seem that in recent decades the only real 'firsts' we've seen have been computer stuff. Which is great and all, but not really heroic, somehow.

Since I'm forty, I sort of expect to see a hero die-off round about now. But are the people I think of as the heroes that have always been there the same people that 20-year-olds have in mind? If so, the current 20s generation may well have a weird time coming up. Hmmm.

Pfft. There is always a hero somewhere, there's just sometimes a regional defecit. But then, I guess it depends on your definition of a hero. If Bobby Fischer fits into that, then there are plenty of heroes still.

This was mentioned at our senior class meeting on Friday.
Most of the class was quite confused at first, as our class secretary, Bobbi Fisher, was seated on the platform, waiting her turn to make announcements.
