Also, I've got some spare time, so I'll take it on myself to write up a Global Summary, which can be modified as we see fit (reboots generally require that, to fit new people in and to write old people out.)

I'm going to be more or less GMing, because I'm probably the single most experienced human being in factional RPs (a few weirdoes on Nationstates aside). Bear in mind that my GM philosophy in this case is largely educational - that is, I tell people when things they're doing are Bad Plans, because I've usually seen it before. Authority is for wankers and bankers.

Feel free to have the Army of the Bright Star disband and become a bunch of wandering clergy, helping everyone they see. I was going to kill them off on the Rakshashi, but this would be better anyways.

EDIT: Hey, I RP on NS you know. It's where I got most of my skill. I am not one of those master RP'ers though. Still.

The Vale's intro post is being worked on as I speak. It's an overview of history as is none.

Okay... I don't think it'll be a good idea to start two RPs at the same time. In the past, it has failed dramatically.

Is this really true? In this case, the mechanics are different enough that I'm not sure if it would even work - not everyone is interested in either a factional RP or a player one.

I don't know... maybe this is just how I've come to understand the factional style, but it really just seems like juggling a bunch of distinct characters at once.

Also, perhaps I misunderstood the new one to be vaguely factional. Although it does appear to place a lot of importance on whose side characters are on, I suppose it's not really factional.

Nalyd cannot do factional RP's. He tried.

Mmm, if you make it that way. Ideally, though, you only deal with heroes in the beginning; the Imbanism 'armies march, cities burn' is a better way of putting how it's supposed to work.

Essentially, if you catch an enemy hero with his pants down with an army, ideally he should either call in reinforcements, flee, or die. Nobody's going to get a Plot Coupon out of being ambushed by a division in a factional RP. In character RPs, by contrast, armies need plot coupons *not* to get obliterated by single-handed, half-dead heroes.

The difference is in great part who the redshirts are. And once I've got maps for it, it'll be a lot more fun the other way - trust me on this one.

The Vale RP is not factional, it is character. Civil war, banditry, heroes venturing into the Northern Wastes to find a cure for the Vale, and the Anama trying to stop them. Very good stuff.

Ideally for a factional RP you will have very broad statements about large groups of people, mixed in with minor characters to give depth. You could either do it this way:

"The mercenary army of Spiderweb descended on the city, setting torch to everything. Where they found valuables, they escorted their new slaves as the slaves hauled the treasures away. Screams occasionally pierced the air as suffocated in burning building. A large wave of the citizens sprinted away from the mercenaries, determined to make it away. Few did."

Or this way:

"Jonas the stablehand was sleeping when the Spiderweb mercenaries attacked the city. Screams and the crack of fire awoke him, and he broke out in a cold sweat. Thinking quickly, he hid in the stables, beneath layers of straw.

The horses neighed as a bandit came in, Jonas leaped at him from behind, overwhelming him. Jonas had then tied and gagged the mercenary up and taken his dagger. Mounting his favorite horse, a black steed, he started going out the back exit.

He guided the horse in the shadows through the massive fires and lines of his fellows carrying away treasures as the monstrous mercenaries oversaw them. Tears welled in his eyes, and he turned away, his exit before him.

He had nearly passed it, but this was it. An off colored patch hastily placed from an earlier raid, looking normal from the other side of the wall. Jonas pulled out his dagger and chipped through the clay patch.

Guiding the horse through the crack, he then remounted and fled the city. Tears welled in his eyes as the fire burned the city, and he left with the screams reverberating in his head. Glancing around, he saw a few others escaping, but only a few. The tears returned."

Are people still interested in this, out of curiosity?

(Specifically, I mean reviving the Avernum RP)

Useually I play Space RP. But since I also play a highly intensive NwN RP server, I know my way around fantasy RP. Count me in.

Well, since LoD is dead, Nalyd is interested in the Vale RP.

(reads Vale intro)

Okay... I can't participate in that with a clear conscience. So the folks who are still willing to participate in the Avernum RP are as follows, with their factions included if applicable:
LakiRa@Buckshot PartyLt. Sullust (Khoth's Disciples)Nikki (Avernite Protection League)Dintiradan (Dominion of the Learned)Alec (The Abyss Knights)Myself (The Order of Krell)Lazarus (The Enlightened Anama)...so, yay new people!
People who we know are out:
Aran (Keepers of Memory... boo thesis!)Goldenking (several factions, inc. Hunters and Order of the Bright Star)Slarty (Goblins)People who originally participated but whose interest is unknown, some of whom are just generally MIA:
Infernal (Disciples of Death)TM (Adventurer's Guild and the rakshasi)Serith, who has disappeared (North-Eastern Avernum Reclamation Faction)Tyranicus (Knights of Old Avernum)Wonko the Sane, whose name has changed (The Looters)Thralni (FNF, a nephil group)Drakey (Righteous Return)Zephyr (Bandits of Bordrao)Spring (Solaria Group)Prem (Order of Kaz)Sarachim (Cult of Grah-Hoth)Yipe. I think that's it. But I think most of the old factions could easily be done away with, particularly if the people involved have either left or don't post anymore.
Also, Goldenking: I for one would not begrudge you a fresh start in a renewed thread, and I think the more people we get involved, the better it would be. You clearly learned a lot from last time.

I think the word that best describes the introduction to the Vale RP is unique. There probably should have been a bit more collaboration on the back story. However, due to poor timing I will be unable to participate.

In the mean time, perhaps we should begin discussing ways to eliminate factions who are no longer being controlled. That way we can get it out of the way in the first post...

I'm capable of multitasking, so I can join this one as well. I'm pretty versatile, so I can easily pick up an abandoned faction when it's more clear which ones are actually abandoned for sure.

Okay, so if I recall correctly, Spring, Thralni and Serith actually wrote their factions out of it. Or they stopped posting... haven't re-read enough of the IC to be sure. But they're moved into the 'gone' category.

Sarachim and Infernal haven't posted in ages, so their factions could probably go. As long as everyone remembers the huge groups of undead and demon worshippers up in the extreme NE corner of Avernum... though I will dearly miss the best post ever, which is required reading for anyone in this RP.

Also, I forgot Sir David had Athron's Ascendancy and that Milla had the Karnold Island League or some-such. And Dikiyoba had a small wandering group of vagabonds in Avernum. Drat. However, Dikiyoba's faction only had two posts, and little significant interaction. Same goes for David, but Milla's faction was a bit more significant.

And I think someone controlled Vahkhos (back again) on Aizo, but that faction also might've been killed already. Which leaves us with this list of factions that need owners or need to be written out:
Knights of Old Avernum (Tyranicus)Adventurer's Guild (TM)The Looters (Wonko the Sane)Righteous Return (Drakey)Order of Kaz (Prem)Karnold Island League (Milla)

Just a suggestion, maybe it would be best to restart from the beginning, with some revisions?

Okay, let me clarify what I mean by what I said. The factions I've mentioned don't necessarily need to be controlled, their presence just needs to be accounted for in some fashion.

And as for starting over, let me say this: NO. Otherwise, why would anyone who had previously participated come back? They'd just be doing the same thing all over again, but they'd have to do it differently. :P
