I can't cheer the death of anyone, no matter how much I disagree. Falwell is only the spokesman for the lunatics, anyway. His death doesn't make them go away. —Alorael, who will if nothing else mourn the loss of the man whose name was synonymous with, well, Jerry Falwell. [Edit: As in, you know, being able to say Falwell and have everyone know what you mean.] [ Tuesday, May 15, 2007 20:39: Message edited by: Vale Stretch ] Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

I can't say I knew who he was until today. But I can see why his death is somewhat of a celebration. -------------------- The Knight Between Posts. Posts: 2395 | Registered: Friday, November 2 2001 08:00 |

Falwell couldn't have been what he was or done what he did if not for the fawning and funding of the flocks who followed him. $200 million a year. Somehow that sickens. I was just watching a great movie from 1986, The Name of the Rose, set in the 14th Century, and in which was depicted the current rift in the church over whether or not the church should be rich. The controversy continues. There is also an interesting bit of history involving Falwell depicted in The People Vs. Larry Flint. -S- -------------------- A4 Item Locations A4 Singleton G4 Items List G4 Forging List The Insidious Infiltrator Posts: 2009 | Registered: Monday, September 12 2005 07:00 |

I pretty much despise the guy's position on a lot of things. I always liked that Voltairesque line, "the Moral Majority, which is neither". But celebrating his death seems perverse. He said what he thought, and he organized a free association of the like-minded. People are entitled to do that. Furthermore, in the long run he probably did his own cause more harm than good just by crystallizing it into an organized movement. An actual moral majority never has to think about whether it is one. Labelling yourself as such is a sign that in fact your day has passed; and I think it even helps to accelerate the trend, because the unthinking majority at least recognizes that it is not you. -------------------- We're not doing cool. I doubt his death will phase the conservative christians. Their concerns existed long before he came into the picture and they will be around long afterwards. The reason he is so popular among conseriative christians he stood up for their beliefs against every thing they feared and thought was wrong with soceity. No liberal or moderate group has show the slightest concern. Personally I feel he was just too dogmatic. -------------------- A rock has weight whether you admit it or not Posts: 479 | Registered: Wednesday, July 12 2006 07:00 |

Hmmm... I wonder if the death of, oh, I don't know, say, a mass-murdering tyrant would be met with as much enthusiasm or if half of us would think he shouldn't have died. I don't agree with everything Jerry stood for and I especially don't like televangilism, but really, celebrating his death? That's just so callow. -------------------- "Even the worst Terror from Hell can be transformed to a testimony from Heaven!" - Rev. I do not celebrate death. That said, I am pleased that Rev. Falwell's dogmatic, almost-fanatic, completely close-minded, opulent, not necessarily Bilbical, fearmongering, ad infinitum, ad nauseum... approach to ... everything ... may no longer be a negative influence on the Christian subculture, and indeed the world. The man was wrong about everything but the very basics of his religion, wrong-headed, and he gave conservatives and Christians alike a bad name. That said, I am "grieving" with the Christian community (by grieving, I mean posting a mournful remark on the station's webpage) out of respect to a powerful influencer. My one fear is that someone else as equally close-minded and dogmatic and wrong will take his place. -------------------- The Silent Assassin is currently out of my communication range. Yeah, I'm just glad that something finally shut him up. I wish it could've been something other than death, like finally realizing that the position which he held was fairly out of touch with social realities... but that's probably too much to ask for. -------------------- Gamble with Gaea, and she eats your dice. I haven't heard of him until now. I'm going to infer that he's one of those fake Christians who scam people into thinking that their donations are going towards "saving people from evil." In my opinion, people like that are just as evil as Hitler or Clinton. -------------------- WWJD? Posts: 1384 | Registered: Tuesday, February 6 2007 08:00 |
