I just handed in my final assignment for this apprenticeship. Unless I failed the mathematics exams as badly as I dare not think about, I will be a real MaTA within about a month or two.

The assignment was quite interesting. In case you

  • know German (or at least enough to understand software documentation)
  • give a damn
you are welcome to download the complete project from http://ermarian.net/downloads/maya/g_prog.tar.gz , or peruse the lovely PDF documentation at http://ermarian.net/downloads/maya/dokumentation.pdf .

The first thing that came to mind was a matador, which was a very weird mental image.

Then a Google search turned up such gems as...

* Memphis Area Transit Authority
* Massachusetts Academy of Trial Attorneys
* Mata Hari
* Country singer Billy Mata
* Mata Chica beach resort
* Mata Ortiz pottery
* Mobilization Against Terrorism Act

And close to thirty-eight million others. This leaves me no closer to figuring out what Aran is becoming, but it does give a great list of possibilities.

Kel: I'd assumed it was a masters in somthing technology-based... The "Ma2 bit kinda pointed me there, though.

Grats, Aran. It's about time you got some formal recognition.

It looks like the most boring thing ever. But hey, the world needs people like you to know stuff like this this so that people like me don't have to. Thanks Aran.

Aran is to become a 'Mathematical-Technical Assistant'. I don't really know what that qualifies him for, though.

Wow, I have no knowledge of German computer jargon.

Basically you took a file with one number on each line. (The first three lines are comment, however)
Each number has a prefix, either M or D, designating whether you are using Mayan or decimal notation for that number, followed by the number itself.
You output the sum of all the numbers, the min and max, and the range (max - min), in both Mayan and decimal.

Did I get the gist of it?

Yay Aran!

So this means that Eye of the Storm will be out before RiB now, right?

I can barely do computer stuff in English, and you learned it in German? Yow.

Congrats.

Kel, SoT: Yeah, it's Mathematical-Technical Assistant. For the last 30 years (and until this year), it was a pretty popular apprenticeship which would be practical enough to look good on applications, but which would at the same time lead to a "Vordiplom" (somewhat analogous to the Bachelor). This year, the whole set-up changed, it got renamed to Mathematical-Technical Software Developer (MaTSE), and basically I'm glad that all that doesn't affect me since I'm done.

ET: Those wise in the ways of computers will eventually rule the world, you know. :P

WKS: Yup, that's the ticket.

Sarasaphilia, German is my native tongue. If I had difficulty learning things in it, something would be very wrong. :P

Eph: EotS will be out in a few months now at most.

Salmon: Mmm... Offer? :confused: I'm somewhat tired and my memory isn't working as it should.

I already built one a few weeks ago. It looks like this:

IMAGE(http://msdn.microsoft.com/coding4fun/images/lego/lego_tipsandtricks/lego_tipsandtricks_1.png)

Well, actually I only programmed it.

But the "take over" and "shoot those who resist" routines have yet to be implemented.

The robot is finished.

It drives around on a table, hits walls and turns around, grabs cans and tries to move them to its home base. And in a week, it will fight and win!

This is last years robot. I'll see if I can get some for this year. I'm the guy in the gray jacket. The robot launches Nerf balls really fast. Few guys got hit were the sun doesn't shine and they were in no small amount of pain. This robot competed in the 2006 USFirst robotics competition.
