Well, yeah, it was a generalization, but in hindsight an awfully unjustified one, as I was thinking of specific people's ways of acting in a specific discussion.

Okay, I'm sorry, my fault. I'll take out the "feelings" part.

I've got a number under 8000, which means I think I came before the spambot rush.

Those in the 5000s still seem so new and shiny to me. Those in the 3000s seem like grandparents. It's all about perspective and where you came in.

Does anyone have a member number that has some significance about your life? If you scramble my member number and add some zeros, you get the date I joined: 08/06/2004. (That's in American date terminology.) You also get Nico's number if you rearrange mine, so OBVIOUSLY she is my soulmate. Strange stuff.

I don't consider anybody as old, unless they actually are old. As far as I know, most of the people on this forum are not old.

Stranegly, that's the last thing I look at when judging somebody being an oldbie or newbie. I always look at the way a person acts on the boards. So, if somebody seems older (more mature) than me, I call him "oldbie," if he seems younger (less mature) then me, I call him "newbie." This can lead to enormous mishaps of course, for if no member numbers would be placed, I could have rated Slarty an oldbie.

God, another Newbie vs. Oldbie debate?.
I think Slarty's and Kel's approach of "Generations" or "Waves" would be the most appropriate. I consider everyone who joined (or became active)within the last year a newbie. Some more than others. Of course I think of Nalyd as more of a newb than Nioca, and so forth. Everyone who joined prior to me (and were active at the time I joined) I consider an Oldbie. Some more than others. Of course I think of Stareye as more of an Oldbie than Aran, and so forth.
Bottom down it doesn't matter much. If you joined within the last 6 months in a board where there are a high number of members that have been around for over 3 years then yes you are a newb and you know it. Moderators are mods for a reason, so please don't go around being mini-mods. If someone is being really obnoxious, you are allowed to say something but don't go reigning over them.

Thralni, logical error there.

You would have labelled Slarty an oldbie if not for his member number, which is #261?

Another proof that I don't look at membernumbers, otherwise I would have noticed that :P

M.: I'm not debating, only stating the way I form my opinion on oldbie- and newbieness according to the way I descrbided in my earlier post. I didn't say anyhting about who is either right or wrong. To be fair, by reacting that way to my post, you started more of a debate than I did.

Hmmm. A debate about debating?

Instead of a member #, how about a year? Why not use the year 2003 for the cutoff year? Anyone before January 2004 are oldbies, 2004 to 2005 are 'middle aged', January to October 2006 are 'young adults', November 2006 to Febuary 2007 are 'teenagers', and everyone else are NOOBS!

Yay! I'm a young adult at 14. I feel important.

Heh, shut up!. I should really restrict myself from posting for the next couple of years. Mistakes as this happen to me far too often.

Anyhow, I refuse to be middle aged. Oldbie sounds cool (for whatever reason) middle aged just sounds middle aged. And I do not intent to be middle aged until I'm old enough to be middle aged! :P .

I just improved my member number by almost 3,500. I remembered I had an old account. Too bad with two posts I am still a new arrival. How many posts does it take before you are no longer a new arrival?

I am jealous of your member number.

Be careful with a word, as you would with a sword,
For it too has the power to kill.
However well placed word, unlike a well placed sword,
Can also have the power to heal.

In case you didn't notice, none of us have any sanity here. Some didn't have it to begin with, like Nalyd, but everyone else left it with the fluffy turtles for food.
