I suddenly realized that people have member numbers in the 8000's now. How does that happen? I also suddenly realized that Titanic was ten years ago, so this could just be me getting old. But there is no way that much more than 500 new people have come through here in any visible way in my time.

Do thousands of people really bother to register here, but never post? Or is it mostly bots?

For one thing, many people register and make only one post. Two, yes there is bots, but there is also lurkers. Three, some people get really bored.

Perhaps you are one of the lucky ones that can filter out the idiots. Although I still would be hard pressed to come up with 500 out of the last 6000 that aren't idiots.

(smaller member number=older spiderweber in terms of membership).

I looked at your profile, you registered only two days before I did. Being on longer doesn't really mean you have more experience. :)

By the time you factor in all the people who register and never post, all the people who register to ask just one or two questions, all the people who register and just hang around for a month or two so that you never get to really know who they are and remember them, all the bots, all the multiple accounts (of both well-known and not-so-well-known people), and then finally all the well-known active posters, it's not surprising to be surprised by how quickly the numbers go up.

Dikiyoba is frequently surprised by it. Of course, Dikiyoba is also surprised to learn that Titanic is over ten years old, so...

Imagine this:

By that time, I would be considered an oldbie.

I'm trying not to.

Besides, there are still some people in the #2000s that aren't even considered oldbies.

8000-2000=6000
20000-8000=12000
Big difference.

Oldbies aren't just those with low member numbers. If you have to talk about it you'll never be it.

—Alorael, who supposes nobody would be an oldbie if nobody talked about it. But wouldn't that be like a communist oldbie dictatorship of the elitist proletariat?

What I meant was that by that time I will have gained expirience and will have gotten a lot better.

Of course, you are an oldbie Alorael. In which case if you are still here by member #20000, then you would be the real oldbie.

You make it seem as if you didn't read the posts after the one you just quoted.

Look at his member number. Look at his name. Think hard.

What is the current status of the "Is lack of proof proof of lack?" conundrum? Because I have some new evidence...

I remember when 5000 was thought of as a very high member number, or maybe still is.

I don't see why people any thought into member numbers. There are people with very low numbers that no one has heard of, and people with higher numbers that everyone knows.

Psst! IFM! When you have every other or every third post in a thread and each post is only a few lines long, you're spamming. Back off a little, okay?
