First of all, I reject the definition of spam given here. It's possible in a busy month to post far more without spamming. It's also possible to post less and spam more. Call your stats something else, like babble. That's more accurate.

Secondly, because I posted on this before and can no longer find that post, I declare war on spam. Spam threads will be closed, spammers will be censured, and spam posts will be considered fair game for editing.

—Alorael, who has made these threats before and rarely carried them out. That sets a bad precedent. He needs to rectify it, and you would be wise to ensure that your posts are not tools of rectification.

I shall assist you in this war against spam.

(Even though that probably just makes me Sancho Panza...)

Good gracious! We've found another bug in the UBB!

The "----" separator appears to be actually used for determining what is the signature of the post in some way. What's weird about this is that it usually works correctly in spite of this.

In fact, I logged in right after EndeavorBot posted and added some extra linebreaks which my program had somehow dropped. It worked correctly then.

If UBB does what it usually does, the next post by EndeavorBot in this topic would result in the "signature" being updated in previous posts, deleting the majority of the stats. So I suppose it's very, very good that I used a different account for it.

--

Having spent a lot of time trying to find a way to distinguish between post and signature in the PPP archives, I find this very ironic.

Huzzah!

The Nine-Headed Cave Cow supports your righteous war against foul meats.

I'm now picturing a take-off of FF Tactics starring Spamza and Delita.

This month we've had one of the smallest ever fractions of new members staying to post at least one post. I'll leave it up to you to decide whether the spamming spree was responsible.

PS The problem with most definitions of spam suggested in this thread is that they assume that most posts before this month had been useful. My definition of useful posting is: will the post will be useful to at least 2 people and/or interesting/amusing to at least 5 people? If the answer is no to both parts, it's spam. (A post in game boards that answers somebody's question can still be useful, but an extended conversation should probably be taken to PMs.) But that's just my personal definition.

Be careful with a word, as you would with a sword,
For it too has the power to kill.
However well placed word, unlike a well placed sword,
Can also have the power to heal.

Well, it seems that we're getting and keeping some newbs, at the very least. That's something to be happy about.

Don't forget that some of the "newbs" are actually older accounts active for the first time. That makes our rate of new posters slightly higher and old posters slightly lower.

I feel no shame in my post count for this previous month. After all, my posting habits tend to reflect the overall posting of this board. My post count is higher this month than previous months because the total posting was higher this month. The number of my spam posts this month was higher because most of the activity was in General this month.

Finally, Dikiyoba proposes we make an effort to separate the spammier topics from the more serious topics to make it easier for the people who don't want to wade through a bunch of one liners to stay active. Dikiyoba doesn't want to lose them.

I'm calling your bluff, Alorael.

This post is brought to you by... SPAM ignorance and idiocy.

I'd love to see this guy banned right now as a good faith token of Alorael's sincerity. Alorael, despite his proliferousness, has ever been one of the least spam-smelling spiderlings around.

Oops. It was Salmon who requested more stats.

About making the stats a little more dynamic: If you want to try it, go ahead. I'm not that great of a mathematician, and thus, making them more dynamic would be beyond my abilities, or my interest. It already took me five hours to do this.

I'm happy with where I wound up at the end. I thought some people said they have something else they needed to do like homework.

Aran - To err is human, to really foul things up requires a computer. At least I know that your plans to take over the world or at least the board will be set back for a while. It's almost like an episode of Pinky and the Brain where they scheme to take over the world.

The formula to estimate spam overestimates the previous legitamate posts. Still short of wasting weeks to examine every post to create a baseline it will have to do.

"What do you want to do tonight, Aran?"

"The same thing we do every night, Drakey. Plan to take over the world!"

"Okay Aran, but this time you've got to wear the tutu!"

Bring back Misc!

But seriously, I wish there was a way to do that, except for bumping topics... which is worse than spam. I hate checking a new thread just to be met with "OMG BUMP!!!"

I ask for a Misc type forum months ago during the Ed incident and it was rejected. Of course that was way before the latest spam war.

Misc. died because it became a spamfest. The better parts of Misc. relocated to General, and unfortunately so did the worst parts. It's our job to keep the good in and the bad out, and it's really not all that difficult to do.

There's no need to go creating new perfect forums when you can perfect the ones you've got. I'd hold up RWG as an exemplar, but... well, I'm sure you can all detect the problems.

That's what the preview button is for. :P

Alorael, are you still handing out cookies to non-complainers? Dikiyoba would like one if you are.

I was hoping that the Preview button was snafu-ed as with everything else on UBB, so I had to test it. Turns out it works just fine, and Alorael is just a very bad man.

This is no longer a subtle touch. This is total war, and all weapons will be utilized. If strikethrough doesn't end the spam then I won't stop until I find out what does.

Beware, spammers! Texts will scroll!

[Edit: And I have been "publically" ridiculed as I deserve.]

—Alorael, who may also just delete posts entirely. That works just fine too. Three strikes and you're banned, or at least Canned and publicly ridiculed.

With a new game coming out this isn't a good time to be Banned. You either miss out on getting questions answered or being able to legitimately buildup your post count answering them.

Ouch. 27. Last month I was at 21. Guess that's what school and work does to your posting habits. Damn real life for getting in the way of virtual goals!

Ah well. Could be worse. Could be 28 or lower… heh.
