that the new Battlestar Galactica series is the greatest show on television now, period. Discuss.

I don't. Period.

Although, only one season has been shown here in Finland. I've watched it but I like it less than Lost.

It is too allegoric, or allegoric in a wrong way.

I <3 Lost and 24. Plus the Office and lots of Food Network.

If they threw that odious Dr Baltar out of an airlock I'd agree with you, Drew.

I HATE Baltar.

International research has shown that CSI: Miami is the best TV series in the world.

Having said that, BSG is pretty cool as well. I like the way they've taken the best bits of the original series (eg, the backplot, the mormon references) and thrown away the dross (eg, that blasted daggit) and instead used them in an intelligent way. Even though I regret the old Baltar (I like my traditional villains) the new Baltar is more realistic.

I've never heard of Battlestar Gallactica. I'd rather watch the baseball game. :/

Baseball is possibly the most boring sport on TV.

I only saw a bit of BSG, but I hated the jerky camera work, and the plot seemed to be pretty stupid.

My favourite TV shows are Enough Rope and Thank God You're Here.

From the little I've seen of Battlestar Galatica I don't even think it makes the top 100. It's slightly better than the original and that sequel where they find Earth but that's not saying much. The original at least had an excuse for bad special effects.

*rubs hands together with glee*

Actually, basketball is the most boringest sport to ever grace a television. About the only thing one might watch for is a thrown chair or punch. Everything else is the same. Dribble, travel, pass, shoot, score. Over and over and over and over. It's one of the few sports were you have to score the object ball 40-50 times to remain competative in the game.

If I ever get broadcast television again, I'll look up test cricket. It sounds fun.

Test Cricket is an interesting sport, in that a single match can take up to 5 days to play. I still enjoy it, though, despite the ponderous pace. The trouble with the shorter versions of the game (One Day and Twenty/20) is that they devalue the role of the bowlers.

Australian Rules Football is the best sport, though.

Aussie football is also good, in that there is no heavy emphasis on padding, while maintaining the extreme emphasis on mangling your opponent. That is good sport. While in poor taste, stingray wrestling is also a well thought of Australian extreme sport.

But more about test cricket. Do they get to take breaks? Cuz it would be more fun to have the bowler v batter endurance contest. When the batter falls asleep at the pitch, just whack 'im in the googley! That would be good TV.

The new Battlestar Galactica is a masterpiece in progress. There has never been a SF TV series (and very little written SF) that so revels in the way nothing big is ever easy and even the most extreme situations almost always deny us simple black and white choices. It's dark, dense stuff, and it's not for everyone. But it's brilliant.

Now, my favorite TV show is The Wire, on HBO, which covers a lot of the same moral territory, without robots. But I'm the only person in the world who watches it.

My knowledge of US TV series is limited, owing more to me not watching TV than to me being in Europe. :P

My sister is a fan of CSI and Friends though, and although I didn't think much of the latter (I don't like sitcoms), I rather enjoyed the CSI season she showed me on dvd.

You haven't really watched it then. I think the effects are great! Remember that it's a tv series, not a multi-million dollar movie, and on a way-non-mainstream cable channel to boot.

Bad special effects? What sci-fi show has better effects?

You are obviously a cylon.

I was excited to hear of a baseball game, played in Nebraska, that lasted 30 hours. Heartbroken to learn it was a Guiness game. Apparently some Canadians had played 25 hours in a previous game and it was the last thing that the US could take away from them. I won't be bothering to get the highlights DVD.

Eh, if you're going for sci-fi, then Doctor Who is the way to go. But I'm rapidly becoming addicted to the show nip/tuck. Really impressive writing and characters... and it helps that one of my roommates has the first two seasons.

Baseball on TV is good. Basketball is more of run-foul-run-shoot(interrupted by foul)-free throw-run-foul...
