I was fishing around the web when I found this thing http://www.spicetrade.org -- it looks like a middle eastern version of civilization. Basically, I was looking for unusual free games. I did not want to download it because it was 190 MB. Thoughts comments.

190mb is a lot of memory for a game, regardless of the genre.

Final Fantasy XI is about 5 GB, actually. 190 MB doesn't seem very big compared to FFXI. Then again, FFXI is an MMORPG.

I've always though the 17mb for GF1 was a big file. I'm living in the past...

Disk space is not memory, and how much 190 MB comes out to depends on two things. One, the capacity of your computer. Two, whether your megabye is 10^6 or 2^20 bytes (a mebibyte). A small difference, to be sure, but a difference.

—Alorael, who can also see connection speed as a factor. While it makes no difference while you're playing the game (unless it's an online game), 190 MB is a lot more over a 28.8k connection than over a T3 line.

Myst IV is 7.02 GB, but it's also graphics oriented.

My biggest most powerful Flight sim is 500 mb. Did you say that game (of 190 mb) is free?

Stronghold takes up the most amount of space of any game on my computer. It had only one install option (i.e., no "minimum" or "full), so when I installed it it schlonked the entire contents of the CD-ROM over onto my harddrive, at about 700 MB. That really hurt on my clamshell iBook—it took up about 1/9 of my entire harddrive, and it would barely run! It wasn't long before I uninstalled it. It works better on my new iMac, and takes up a lot less harddrive space (percentage-wise).

I'd like to get Myst IV some day—but I sincerely hope it has a minimum install option! 7 GB on my iMac would be like 700 MB on my iBook...

Seems like every time computers get bigger and better—and you think "Finally I have enough space for everything!"—the game makers practically anull that by increasing the demands of their products. Grrr. That's one reason why I like Spiderweb games so much.

The minimum installation is significantly smaller at 3357.5 MB, as opposed to the full installation of 7158.8 MB; still a big file, but somewhat better.

What constitutes a minor infraction for a member:

+ Advertising or any form of commercial solicitation.

Discussing fun free and odd games is not "Advertising or any form of commercial solicitation. "

"Try [x] games" is essentially solicitation. Those games are not free, merely odd, making the solicitation necessarily commercial.

Go easy on him, guys. It seems as if the link was posted in good faith, and it's not as if he started a new topic for it or anything.

The point of posting this was not solicitation. If you look at it this is one of those things that runs counter to your standard "game"-- the theme is different. I thought it was interesting because it used a "different" viewpoint than a typical fan boy games. They had a link to another site http://www.socialimpactgames.com

Actually, the site happens to have demos for download, which are free. If you are going to get Harlequin on what seems to me to be a technicality, (the games offered at the site are not free for full versions), then by the same token he could very well be talking about the demos.

My point is that you're assuming he's practicing commercial solicitation. Why not give him the benefit of the doubt and consider his post a friendly suggestion to those who would like a free demo to a decent game?

After all, the post is clearly meant to be a suggestion, in context. It seems wrong to interpret the CoC this literally. You seem to be taking the post out of context, is all.

Everything on the site is freeware exept for one game. I enjoy wolfire games and I thought that fun free games was what the discusion was about. I don't want any hard feelings, I was just trying to add to the convesation.

Not to worry. I think the warning was more that you were nearing infringment, not actually infringing.

I'll admit that the warning was at least half grumpiness. Sorry about that. Commercial plugs belong elsewhere, though, even if they're not intended as plugs.

—Alorael, who will certainly concede that the games are odd even if they're only debatably free.

I tried that spicetrade game. It sounds cool, but doesn't exactly start with a bang. You see screens full of old middle eastern maps and paintings, and click on parts of them to move, or initiate simple dialogs, or buy saffron bulbs, etc. So it's actually a kind of choose-your-own-adventure game, as far as I can see. I got as far as borrowing 300 dirhams from my uncle, wandering out to my field outside town, and buying a saffron bulb in the bazaar. It would only let me buy one, though I could have afforded a dozen or so.

I couldn't even figure out how to plant my one saffron bulb, but I found a screen that warned me I might have to buy warehouses and hire guards to protect my crops. So I thought, if it's this hard just to plant the darn thing, I'll never manage to defend it; it'll be a long, long road to dominating medieval world trade with my saffron. So I gave up.

Oh, and I talked to a witch who offered to introduce me to her demonic master in return for hashish. It threw me a bit that I was getting options like that so early in the game, but perhaps if it's so hard to plant a bulb, the hashquest is the endgame.

I didn't even get that far; I loaded the game and couldn't do anything because the picture went beyond the screen, so I thought I would try changing the resolution so it would fit. I'm on a 20-inch monitor with the resolution at 1024 x 768; I changed it a couple times and ended up at 1344 x 840, and it was still cut off a bit. I don't know why it was doing that, but by then the print was getting too small to read.

Wing Commander Prophecy's bigger than that, and it's getting old now...

Anyway, Hard Drive space is not the issue. Just download it overnight, thats what I do with files around that size. I download half of it one night, pause it, and continue the next night.
