mainly because the rats I've faced all get two attacks a round? If I get attacked by a single creature its not an issue, when there are more than one, unless I'm going to drain my spell points every battle, I'm not likely to kill them all in one round, which means they get an attack in, which in the case of rats is two attacks a round seemingly doing 35 or so damage total, just seems to me that hardiness and armor should have more effect than that.

So how exactly does the comabt system work?
dexterity makes you harder to hit, but its vague on how much harder. Does armor reduce the chance to hit you, the damage your take, or both, and by how much?

is there any point in wearing good armor? The penalties to hit are huge, and can easily add up to like -50% or more it seems.

I ask because I have a situation where I have a belt. 2% armor +1 dex. i also have another belt which is 6% armor, but I have no idea which one is really better as far as protection goes.

and honestly..what is up with the uber enemies that trash you with every hit ? even with lots of armour and 8 or 9 toughness..hardiness...

What about camping? Its terribly frustrating to have to walk all the way back to town to be able to replenish. camping with the chance of random encounters before was great.

10 rats.. in Avernum 4

so for that 10 rat quest, are there any rats that aren't around the city? I've completely explored everything I can find, short of the mine and that wizard with all the undead, and for the life of me, I'm at 8 rat tails. I've checked my map for unexplored sections and unless its behind a high lock pick door (for me 8 or more) then I can't imagine where these other 2 rats are.

Yep, which is why I was having so much trouble finding this :)
It was really a LONG time ago, but I remember it clearly. I can't recall how I found the game (likely through mpogd.com or a similar site) but I can't seem to find a trace of it now.

if the mud was text based, no i'm not..this was seemingly an online version of exile using the same graphics.

The only reason I think it was related was because it used the graphics set from this exile. It could have been a fan project, etc.
I'm still trying various google searches (even if the project is dead, usually you can still find old pages on it) but nothing jumping out at me yet.

I think there was a client, and I can't recall why at the time I didn't download it and try it out.
I just thought of it now because someone had mentioned something about free online games, and having just gotten back into this it struck me as odd that I never followed up on it..i'm trying to google it..but finding way to much unrelated stuff to dig through.
I do recall that it was plainly called Exile Online.

I remember some time ago.. coming across a site that mentioned something about a game being done called Exile online..it had the classic graphics.. and I remember very little beyond that.. I can't even recall how long ago it was.
Does anyone know anything about this? ( I don't think Jeff had anything to do with it from what I remember)

While the walkthrough is a good guide to the game, it doesn't fall into the definition of what a walkthrough is for most games. Usually walkthroughs are step by step guides complete with all secrets, hidden things, neat and fun encounters, etc.
(including strategies for difficult encounters, etc)
Does one of those exist for the official scenarios at all?
(i.e. a guide with all hidden doors, passages, hidden items, lists of whats behind each barrier, etc)

Thats a possibility I suppose, but it seems an extreme measure to take to complete part of the scenario doesn't it? I tried it a few more times but no luck, I couldn't get past the 2nd round in any fight, buffing, a few summons.. it didn't much matter because he just summoned way to many critters (and deadly ones that had attacks that could kill everyone in a single round at once)

you should maybe stick a bigger warning on it then that..
haste both fighters
triple bless one...single bless the other..summon beast and shade..
read the book
his first turn
summon fire breathing hydras of death (x3)
summon vampie
summon cave giants of beating death x3
hydras blast everyone for fire and he does something else fun..
end result
the triple blessed fighter is dead
everyone else is at 0..
my turn..go..
everyone is around level 13..

ah okay.. I think I've gotten a couple of those.. but I don't think anywhere near as many as the locked off areas I've found :)
Is there anything worth it in the locked areas? I've pretty much completed the scenario and am standing at the south gate with around 4k gold.

I first played Exile: Escape from the pit back probably right around the time it first came out. Memory is fuzzy..but I'm fairly sure it was before I graduated high school in 1997. I love them all, thought they were the greatest thing ever.
They reminded me somewhat of the old D&D gold box games.
I took fleeting peaks at avernum as they were slowly done and released (never quite understood WHY they redid the series instead of something new) but I have a couple of questions.
Why only 4 characters as opposed to the 6 in the original?
and do the series improve in technology and features greatly like the original did? For those who played them, you'll remember that the interface and features, seemed much nicer by the time Blades of Exile was reached. Does the same thing occur in avernum.. if I go back to 1, will i notice missing spells, skills, options ,etc? or is it the same pretty much all along?
