BoA is slow because it's badly programmed

Hi, I'm a hobbyist game programmer for the mac, and I started playing with the editor... ouch! pretty long stuff to write a good rpg story, even if you have the engine!

I am used to writing arcade games (actually I've written only one "serious" one (shareware) and a few other unreleased) and I am noticing the big difference between writing an "algorithmical" game, such as a puzzle/simple arcade (say like tetris or bomberman)and writing a story-based game(such as an rpg), where you have to put many ideas inside (while for a puzzle/arcade you might well have only one idea).

Just to put the walls for a few dungeons took me a lot of time, I don't even want to think about the rest... I think I'll give up since to make something good will take too much time, and I think I could write a simple new game from scratch instead (and try to sell it).

But I think what Jeff Vogel has done with BoA is simply the programmer's dream: I write the engine (that from a programmer's point of view is more fun than writing scenarios, I can assure you) and I'll have people writing great stories for it, making this product a win-win-win game: (Jeff Vogel wins - scenario developers win (have fun - can win prize) -normal players win (have many good quality adventures).

I think I'll take only the player's perspective in this case ;-)

PS. I've put a nice number of hours making some good enough dungeons and outdoors: if you want them just ask.

I have never played BoE and the Exile Series, therefore I do not know how talented are our scenario devs.

I would like to know if some BoE scenarios are actually more fun than the original Exile games, and if so, do you think that some BoA scenarios will be as fun as A1 and A2 (that I preferred to A3)?

Moreover, do you think that BoA has a more natural ambientation in the "surface" or can you still make scenarios in "Avernum" (which I preferred)? I guess it's hard to do scenarios in our beloved avernum since you would have to copy all the map from A1 and make all cities again... but do you think someone will make a new huge scenario in avernum? Something that could be considered A4? The revenge of Linda? The rage of the dragons? The return of Erika Redmark? This is what I'd love! will we presumably have it?

:o :o :o :o

Set aside that I am a big fan of all avernum games and of their programmer, I was wondering why Avernum after Avernum the game keeps getting slower and slower. I mean, on a reasonably good computer the Avernum games should go really fast: there are almost no animations...

As soon as there is a 5*5 pixel explosion the game slows! When it has to play a sound it slows! When it has to calculate the damage you made it slows! I mean, what kind of RandomNumberGenerator is Vogel using :D ??

Ok there is the scripting language that might be heavy but... I have some experience programming (radicalrebound.com, hint hint...) and I don't really think the computations involved can take so much time...

oh well, time to buy a new mac...
