Fantasia (the one that came out around 1950) Pinocchio (Fagin and his sidekick reminded me of kids from my neighborhood) Snow White (the Evil Queen reminded me of my mom in real life) At one time Walt Kelly, who created the comic character Pogo, was an illustrator for Disney. He used to draw the Donald Duck comics in the 40's, and they had a lot of rich detail and characters in the background, like Pogo did later on. After he left Disney the comics looked childish and empty. -------------------- "I can't give you brains," said the Wizard of Oz to the Scarecrow, "but I can give you a diploma." - L. I took the test some time ago and Bush was on the bottom. I forget which Democratic candidate was on the top. I would vote for essentially anyone against George Bush. I don't think creating a robber baron economy is even sustainable, never mind decent. -------------------- "I can't give you brains," said the Wizard of Oz to the Scarecrow, "but I can give you a diploma." - L. I grew up with no religion, and when I was in the army I had "no preference" on my dogtags. Later in life I went to a Unitarian Universalist church for awhile. Their creed seems to be "everyone gets saved" and I liked that idea. Still later in life I was in addiction recovery, and one tenet of that is that addicts think they are God, or the drug of choice is, so they need to get the concept of some kind of higher power that doesn't want to kill you or make you suffer. Because if I believe everything is up to me, I'm planning my next relapse. I like reading the Hindu, Buddhist and Muslim daily thoughts on beliefnet.com. The Dalai Lama is big on simple kindness, and that's a pretty good guideline for me. -------------------- "I can't give you brains," said the Wizard of Oz to the Scarecrow, "but I can give you a diploma." - L. This type of question usually appears in a context where there are two possible escape routes and you can ask one question to learn which route to take. So you ask either of the two "If you were the other Wyrm (or guard or whatever) which route would you say leads to freedom?" In this form, the question forces an answer describing the opposite of what you want no matter which individual you ask, so you take the other route. You never find out who the liar was. -------------------- "I can't give you brains," said the Wizard of Oz to the Scarecrow, "but I can give you a diploma." - L. Originally written by Marooner: "What's your opinion on Government agencies such as these? (RCMP) Does that make me a bad person? What do you think of undercover-funding based on recuperation and reutilisation of seized property and material? What of police corruption?" Protecting citizens from crime and maintaining order is a legitimate function of government. Serving your government does not make you a bad person. Paying expenses by selling confiscated property instead of raising taxes seems a reasonable action, so long as some effort was made to return the property and it is sold only when impossible to trace the original owner, or when the original owner was the criminal. Obviously any government dishonesty or corruption is bad. Maybe that's why the RCMP selection process is so rigorous; to weed out candidates likely to abuse their authority. Look at your own motives for joining the RCMP, and if they are idealistic you don't have anything to apologize for. I admire you for wanting to serve. Economic -3.12 Social -2.46 Although I thought it was a bad idea (bad for everybody including the US) to go to war with Iraq (Operation Desert Pork), I also believe the most (self) destructive war we are waging is the War on Drugs. Prohibition didn't work in the 20's and it isn't working today. -------------------- "I can't give you brains," said the Wizard of Oz to the Scarecrow, "but I can give you a diploma." - L. I vote for the Dryad who wants a perfect flower. She's beautiful, ruthless and magical. She'd turn me into a clown and send me off on treasure hunts to bring her expensive trinkets. It would be a life of pathetic devotion and endless quests, hoping for a fleeting kiss. -------------------- "I can't give you brains," said the Wizard of Oz to the Scarecrow, "but I can give you a diploma." - L. There's an old Nat King Cole song that says the only purpose is "To love, and be loved in return." Or, you could try volunteering for service work. Being only for ourselves is an empty proposition. -------------------- "I can't give you brains," said the Wizard of Oz to the Scarecrow, "but I can give you a diploma." - L. from a quick search for "HUAC": House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC), a committee (1938–75) of the U.S. House of Representatives, created to investigate disloyalty and subversive organizations. Its first chairman, Martin Dies, set the pattern for its anti-Communist investigations. The committee's methods included pressure on witnesses to name former associates, vague and sweeping accusations against individuals, and the assumption of an individual's guilt because of association with a suspect organization. Witnesses who refused to answer were cited for contempt of Congress. A highly publicized 1947 investigation of the entertainment industry led to prison sentences for contempt for a group of recalcitrant witnesses who became known as the Hollywood Ten. In 1948, Whittaker Chambers made sensational accusations of Soviet espionage against former State Dept. official Alger Hiss; those hearings kept the committee in the headlines and provided the first national exposure for committee member Richard Nixon. Critics of the committee contended that it disregarded the civil liberties of its witnesses and that it consistently failed to fulfill its primary purpose of recommending new legislation. After 1950, Sen. Joseph M cCarthy borrowed many of the committee's tactics for his own Senate investigations. The committee (renamed the House Internal Security Committee in 1969) was abolished in 1975. -------------------- "I can't give you brains," said the Wizard of Oz to the Scarecrow, "but I can give you a diploma." - L. Economic left/right -4.38 Authoritarian/Libertarian -4.31 Age 64 Voted for Lyndon Johnson in '64 because of fear Barry Goldwater would get us into a war in Vietnam. Last election voted for Ralph Nader. Next election, will vote for anyone who can beat George Bush before he wrecks the country. Thinks politics is inherently a disappointing proposition. -------------------- "I can't give you brains," said the Wizard of Oz to the Scarecrow, "but I can give you a diploma." - L.
