Let me second and third that puzzles need to be organic to the storyline, which is why I prefer NPC and dialogue puzzles: they're not presented as puzzles (or shouldn't be), just some information you get that you can act on. Perhaps you can't move forward until you get more information and figure out what it means, but it isn't like some evil trickster has decided to sit down and say, "Hey, I like puzzles. I'll let you kill me if you figure this one out." Last time I checked, fiends don't tend to act that way. Also, carting stuff around (except things like keys, which you get and maybe don't know what to do with just yet) is BAD. Laser puzzles are usually bad, although admittedly often make the most sense, plotwise, as a barrier (if you want to hold off the invading hordes, laser puzzles would be great--but the scenario needs a way for the occupants of the protected area to get in and out without spending half a day maneuvering mirrors and the like). Finally, GREAT QUESTION/survey! I hope other people out there doing the hard work of designing scenarios are reading this thread. Posts: 12 | Registered: Monday, November 18 2002 08:00 |

Perhaps I have an overactive superego, but I can never just go about killing anything and everything (playing "evil"). I know it's a game, but I still feel a twing guilty. I was wondering how other people felt when they were playing crpgs. This poll has been moved to another forum. Posts: 12 | Registered: Monday, November 18 2002 08:00 |

That's the great thing about dragons--you can always make them attack you first, damn vanity. Actually, I way too over-identify with my characters and feel guilty about killing innocents and never keep a game where I've killed an innocent. But sometimes, its fun to try. I'm on a Mac, and don't know how to open the graphics files--they're contained with a Blades of Avernum document file. Is the only way to access the bmps through ResEdit (which I didn't know survived the transition to OSX)? Can the BoA editor extract them and then reimport them? Is there a tutorial somewhere on editing game graphics--specifically, getting the bmp (or whatever) files and restoring the edited ones to the game? I a graphics pro, so I don't need tips on the actual pixel manipulation, but I don't know how to import/export the various graphics to the game. Also, if swapping out graphics is reasonably do-able, does anyone want to (or already does) host a repository of graphics? Ditto both questions for the character icons. Has anyone survived killing Sulfras? It was a bit tough killing him (or her--can never keep dragon gender straight), I couldn't attack his guards--when I went to where they were casting spells at me, insteading of being able to attack, I was just blocked. One of them, though, at some point did become a regular stone statue (was that Erika's spy?), which I could attack. Are the guards (black shades?) attackable if you do something first? Can they be targeted with spells (since there are no area spells in A1)? Posts: 12 | Registered: Monday, November 18 2002 08:00 |

It appears that most people don't like archers--which I think is bizarre. I give everyone some bow skill, even my spell casters. I'd rather they can do some damage without using spell points, even if it is just a bit. My typical party is human, always has an archer (high dex, bow, assasination; builds decent sword, sometimes has high tool use), a priest with some mage levels (and natural mage), a mage with some priest skill (and natural mage), and usuall has another fighter with bow skill and some pole arm, plus a few levels of priest. Eventually, the one trait everyone gets to a fairly high level is strength, just so they can carry stuff. Avernum needs a bag of holding. I'm going through Avernum 1 for the first time now, and am running a party like above, minus the second fighter. Thanks! I couldn't find it in the manual, but I'm not much of a manual reader. Apparently, I'm not much of a dialogue box reader, either. ;) Posts: 12 | Registered: Monday, November 18 2002 08:00 |

I have found getting webbed to be THE most annoying/hindering thing that happens to party members. I can't figure out how to get rid of the web effect without resting. Which, while I'm doing Z-K Run, is something I'm avoiding. Is there a way to get rid of it? Posts: 12 | Registered: Monday, November 18 2002 08:00 |

I didn't try to take on Khoth or Morog--they reaked of fights I wasn't meant to do--but I did end up killing Haakai. I cast simmulcum on him five times and let the simmulcums summon beasties to keep the original H occupied. Meanwhile, I had my archer pick at the O.H. while everyone else hid. The massed giants fell fairly easily with wands, lightning and an attempt to kill the shamens. The hard part was figuring out who was a shamen...
