Are you using a Mac or a PC?

—Alorael, who has heard that MS Paint is a good choice for the PC side, while most Mac computers bought within the last five or so years came with Clarisworks/Appleworks, which has a decent paint program.

The GIMP is just about useable, and free (and Free, if you care about that)

I used MSpaint for all my graphics on TM's graphics page. It works for me, and best of all it doesn't crash (much).

MS Paint crashes? I use clarisworks. It has a decent paint program, with all the basic features, though it doesn't have any particularly advanced features. I make all my graphics using this.

I like Graphic Converter. It has some Photoshop features, at about 1/20th of the price.

Yeah. Photoshop's nice, but it's pretty expensive.

There is a new version of PhotoShop out called PhotoShop Elements that contains the main features of PhotoShop, but lacks the "power" tools. It's a fraction of the cost of PhotoShop - might be worth checking out.

Another great graphics program is Paint Shop Pro. It has a lot of features and you can get the trial version for free.

Drakey: I still prefer Photoshop, but then again, I got mine for free (and I didn't piraet, either).

Paint Shop Pro... Couldn't say, I use a Mac. All I know is that Clarisworks is bad, bad, bad, bad, bad news.

What's so bad about Claris? It's not got alot of bells and whistles, true, but it's not BAD. It's a decent program, and I still prefer it to MS paint.

Yeah yeah, it is old. I'm switching to Appleworks once I start using my new iBook, which I will do as soon as I hook it up to the internet (one of these days), and I also plan to try photoshop elements and GIMP. Excuses excuses.

I guess this is sort of on-topic. Most of the bitmaps in the DATA folder for A3 give me an error message when I try to open them. Something to the effect that the file data cannot be parsed. Any ideas what I can do about this?

EDIT: Adobe Photoshop 6, Windows 98

I've had similar comments with Tiff files and adobe. I'm not really sure what it means (I'm assuming it's a problem with Adobe), but try opening the files with MS Paint. You shouldn't have any problems with that, hopefully.

Educational institutions can receive discounts from Adobe. If you're a student, you may also be eligible for a discount, although I'm not sure how you would go about getting one.

That's an awful screenname.

Other than that, it's perfectly easy to find free educational versions lying about.

Do Not Use AppleWorks For Graphics! It does strange things that'll distort whatever your working on.
Use Graphic Converter instead. Much more powerful, full-featured unregestered (it'll subject you to an up to 30 second soujourn in the 'regester' dialog box though).
