I was curious as to what people thought about the spells in BoA.

This is a very interesting poll.
What apricot muffin thought that haste was useless?

Well War Blessing will gives haste at level 3, among other benefits. Haste's usefullness is reduced by the fact that it only affects one character, unlike previous Avernums where it would haste the whole party.

Haste has a much longer duration of hasting than War Blessing, though. It also has a correspondingly stronger effect on initiative, and given how fast-paced BoA's combat can be, initiative is a big deal.

I'm astonished that so many people think Create Illusions is useless; it's probably my mage's single most commonly used spell. Sometimes I give my priests 6 levels of mage spells specifically to allow them to cast Create Illusions. My party has a lot of archery in it, so keeping a wall of monsters between us and the enemy is a huge asset.

I thought Create Illusions was useless. Of course, it does sound practical for your type of party. From this, you can assume that most people don't have their party set up this way.

How is Capture Mind, Spray Acid, Call Beast, or Control Foes usefull?

You don't think Capture Mind and Control Foes are useful??? They freakin' saved me in A Small Rebellion (Empire Archers are great charming victims). If you use these spells to charm stupid creatures that deal high damage within a group, it works wonders. You can also charm an individual and kill it, so it won't fight back.

Control Foes was pretty handy in Exodus, too; enemies were strong enough and tough enough that it was more efficient to charm a couple and let them beat each other up for a couple of rounds. It doesn't get really useful until level 3 when it finally actually charms things, though.

I left out terror, the only spell I've never used. I'd like to know where that can be useful.

Terror's usefulness is reduced because it only effects one target (right?).

I never use special summoning spells or summon aid(Most useless spell hands down). Create Illusions, Slow, War Blessing, and Heal will probably win most fights in the game though. TM scenarios and possibly a few others are the only exceptions.

Arcane Blow is nice, but I've never actually used it in a real scenario. Too high of an SP cost for dungeons, and my parties rarely get to a high enough level to use it properly.

I included Cloud of Blades as useful, even though I hate using it. The spell is either completely useless or extremely useful. Jeff should have created a set damage, rather than based the damage off of a percentage of total HP. Also, we need more area of effect spells.

The purpose of illusions is not to kill things; it's to die so that you don't. :P

I'd like to know why everyone accuses Internal Flamming Muffin of being Ed. Apricot muffin doesn't really mean anything, except for a possible fascination with muffins.

Ed was well-known for calling people food items during flames. For instance, he once called someone a "silly mustard".

Some people are just a little skeptical because of his topic that asked about Ed.
