I managed to place an article about Blades and Spiderweb in a serious, big daily newspaper! The online-version is here. (When I find a free foto-hosting I could link a scan from the printed version too, it looked nicer.) :P It is to hope that Jeff has now a remarkable increase of Swiss downloads. He's more than secretive with statistics though, so we probably never will know. -------------------- Slartucker: * facepalm facepalm facepalm * Dikiyoba: Are you unconscious yet? :) Thank you all. Somebody could translate it for you, chicho. Maybe Aran if you ask him nicely ^_^ quote:I wrote a little concept and mailed it to magazines and newspapers. The third one was interested to publish the story. They wanted to have something about shareware games in general, so SW stands as an example. Photobucket threw me out after three months, they only give limited access for free. to ef: I surely will molest them again when A4 comes out. edit: puts "h" into chico [ Monday, August 08, 2005 15:42: Message edited by: spy.there ] -------------------- Slartucker: * facepalm facepalm facepalm * Dikiyoba: Are you unconscious yet? If we let Google destroy language, it will not be long before our minds are destroyed as well. With that in mind, here we go: Back to Fantasy with shareware games The game market is flooded by soulless first person shooters. Where have the real plots gone to? The small, independent game developers. By Evita Eberhard Computer games are getting ever more awe-inspiring. Polished interfaces and fine graphic details with ever more realistic splatter effects lure new players into the virtual game worlds. But do the graphics determine the quality of a game? No, say die-hard RPG fans on internet forums. Because large companies only invest in graphics instead of a solid plot or background, the enjoyment is limited, according to "Mirzel" from gametunnel.com. In Roleplaying Games (RPGs), the player directs his characters through a fantasy world, fighting against monsters and gaining experience. RPGs, especially MMORPGs (Massive Multiplayer Online RPGs) are currently experiencing a boom: "World of Warcraft" reports 1.5 million subscribers. And while ever increasing numbers of players kill time and monsters online [hah, managed to translate the pun!], good old single-player RPGs are also gaining adherents. "In spite of the vast number of available products, there is no single MMORPG that truly deserves the name 'roleplaying game'", complains "Holy Avatar" on 4players.de, "Hack & Slay remains the priority." Those seeking a story will soon tire of multi-user-dungeons. Good stories can, however, be found with indie developers. Those who do not have a budget of millions to spend on dozens of artists and aggressive marketing play to their strengths by inventing suspenseful plots. Smaller companies like Fantasoft, Ambrosia or Anino stand up to the competition with shareware and fantasy. Absorbing background stories are also the hallmark of Spiderweb Software: With their "Avernum" trilogy and "Blades of Avernum", the tiny company in Seattle has put out one of the best and most popular RPG series today. Gate to the Underworld Avernum is a massive, inhospitable cave system deep beneath the surface. The benevolent dictatorship named "The Empire" uses it banish undesired citizens and races. You, the player, are next: Off to Avernum! Eventually, you will end up in the midst of a revolution, you must dispose of hidden toxic waste or eliminate a dangerous vampire. You are at risk of losing yourself in this fantastic secondary world: When you are still searching for the secret scrolls while light is already dawning outside, it is already too late. Your life will be changed forever - Spiderweb has just planted a non-expiring Cookie into your cerebral cortex. Welcome to the club. Spiderweb games captivate through their surprising turns, their intelligent dialogue, and an underlying Monty-Python-like humor. Not necessarily through graphical realism: Avernum uses an isometric view; the player moves his up to four characters like figures over a chess board. The classical style has its own charm, and sparks the imagination. Simple graphics require neither expensive cards nor memory, and the games run on PCs just as well as they do on Macs. The shareware price of $25 for near infinite fun is also nearly impossible to undercut. "Infinite" is to be taken literally: Spiderweb's newest installment "Blades of Avernum" contains not just four single episodes but a complete game editor. After registering "Blades", anyone can - with a little talent and some interest in scripting - design his own scenarios. A clever concept, for which RPG fan does not brood over their own ideas for a new game? Since the game was released in 2004, 17 user-created scenarios have already been published: "Blades of Avernum" is constantly growing in size and value. "I just design the sort of game I want to be playing," says Jeff Vogel, the creator of these games. Vogel, a "fanatical gamer" at 12, would soon become a fanatical programmer. While studying mathematics, he wrote "Exile", released it as shareware, and it paid off. He founded Spiderweb Software and dropped out of grad school. Eleven years and eleven games later, the company is still in business and feeding three full-time employees. Shareware against the mainstream "There will always be a market for single-player games", thinks Vogel. "Blades of AvernuM" has "sold unexpectedly well". That raises hopes. For instead of the outnumbering bestsellers that are flooding the shelves, instead of ever more bombastic FP-shooters and more simple-minded car racing simulations, we do wish a more creative background; more Jeff Vogels, for whom quality is more important than cashflow. Shareware has more style. --- (Cautionary note: I went for speed over quality because I'm lacking time. I still think it's better than the auto translator, though.) Edit: Fixed - it seems my own cortex is a little overtaxed with texts. Have I really just managed to write a single sentence with 4 x? :D [ Tuesday, August 09, 2005 22:23: Message edited by: Aranfoolcaytar ] -------------------- Encyclopaedia Ermariana • Forum Archives • Forum Statistics • RSS [Topic / Forum] My Blog • Polaris • I eat novels for breakfast. dang all that translating for nothing mineswell With Shareware Games back to the Fantasie "Blades OF Avernum": Save the world, which became to create (2) in the wordprocessor with sword and magic. 1/2 The computer game market flooded of soulless Ego Shootern. Where did genuine stories remain? With small, independent play developers. By Evita Eberhard Computer games become ever more breath-robbing. Surfaces and finer details with ever more genuine Splattereffekten, ever more polished, lure into the virtual play reasons. But great diagrams make a play better? In no case, eingefleischte game of roles fans on InterNet forums believe. Because large companies invested the play pleasure only into the diagram instead of into history, hold themselves, mean within limits Mirzel on gametunnel.com. In games of roles, RPGs so mentioned (Role Playing Games), directs the player its figures by a Fantasiewelt, fights against monsters, wins at experience and strength. Games of roles, above all MMORPGs (massifs Multiplayer on-line Role Playing Games) experience at present a boom, "World OF Warcraft" announce 1.5 million subscriber. And during itself ever more player time and swords on-line around the ears strike, find also the good old Singleplayer RPGs again more trailer. "defiance of the enormous number of products gives it not one MMORPG, that to the name game of roles really earned", complains Holy Avatar on 4players.de, "chops & to Slay is the center of attention always." Who looks good stories up, in the multi-user Dungeon will soon bore itself. One finds good stories however with independent play developers. Because who does not have a million-budget for 20 computer commercial artists and an aggressive marketing available, can be broken in with advantage an exciting Plot. Small play developers such as Fantasoft, Ambrosia or Anino maintain ground with Shareware and Fantasie. Packing stories are also the brand name of mirror-image the Web software. The small company in Seattle launched one of the best and most popular RPG series with the "Avernum" Trilogie and "Blades OF Avernum". Gate to the underworld Avernum is deep an enormous, inhospitable cave world under the earth's surface. After Avernum the charitable dictatorship banished its unpleasant fellow citizens and unwanted races named Empire. They, players, are the next one: Off after Avernum! Possibly you come in the middle into a revolution, must dispose hidden poison barrels or eliminate a dangerous Vampir. Lose yourselves only not in these fantastischen Gegenwelt. If you still always look in the morning-grey for the secret papers, it is too late. Their life will be never more like in former times - mirror-image the Web planted you evenly a Cookie into the Cortex cerebri. Welcomely in the club. Mirror-image the Web plays captivate by surprising idioms, intelligent dialogs and a untergruendigen Monty Python humor. Not necessarily by graphic realism: Avernum is to be seen ISO metric (diagonally from above), the player shifts its four characters such as chessmen over the display. The classical style has however charm and animates the own imaginative power. Simple diagram needs neither expensive diagram cards nor much storage space; the plays function on PCS just as stably as on Macs. Also the democratic Shareware price of 25 can hardly be undercut dollar for an infinite play pleasure. Infinite is to be understood literally. Spiderwebs newest throw "Blades OF Avernum" contains not only four individual episodes, but also a complete play wordprocessor. Who registers "Blades", can create - with something talent and interest for programming - scenarios. A cleveres concept. Which RPG fan doesn't breed at own ideas? Since the play on the market is, already 17 new scenarios developed: "Blades OF Avernum" grows and grows and is indeed a play with increase in value. "I sketch the type of plays, which I would like to play gladly", say Jeff bird, the genialische Kreator behind mirror-image the Web software. Bird, already with twelve a "fanatischer Gamer", became soon the fanatischen programmer. As a mathematics student it wrote "exiles", released it as Shareware, and - see there - it paid. Bird created mirror-image the Web software and let the university rush. Eleven years and eleven plays the company still always pays later and nourishes three full time employees. With Shareware against the Mainstream "it will always give a small market for old-fashionable games of roles", believes bird. "Blades OF Avernum" sold itself "over expecting well". That lets hope. Because instead of the majorityable Topseller, which pour from all shelves, instead of always bombastischere Ego Shooter and stupidere Autorasersimulationen require ourselves we nevertheless more creative background; more Jeff of bird, quality is more important to which than the cash-flow. Shareware has simply more style. [ TA | 08.08.2005 ] (no I didnt use google translator or any online translator for that bmatter) Posts: 507 | Registered: Tuesday, March 1 2005 08:00 |
