I've heard that Blades of Avernum lets you creat your own Avernum world, right? Is it avaliable yet?

--------------------
The Story
--------------------------------
Tim (the Sorcerer) was walking out peacefully one day when..... ...he became ambushed by a pair of Mung Demons assisted by a Demon Golem. He had the stuffing beaten out of him and was left on the cold, dirt, road to perish. But then..... ... X came! And he attempted a healing spell. But it didn't work! So, X knew he wasn't going to make it(sniff). So, Tim's last words were "Toe" or something that sounded like it. So X thought that Tim wanted him to take his toe, as a token, for his departure. As X was ripping Tim's toe off with a Piercing Crystal, Tim began to moan, cry, and then.... he DIED! X then cried his eyes out(yeah right) and then left.
X was then really bored with the toe, then he decided to make it into a Xian item. He gave it the talking ability. And the Xian Toe lived happily ever after! The END!

Yes, you can create scenarios in Avernum. To a limited extent, you can create your own world. (It will look VERY similar to Avernum, though.)

You cannot create a completely original world.

Actually, all of that should be future tense, since it isn't out yet. In the meantime, take a look at Blades of Exile.

In terms of terrain and plot, you can create anything you'd like. However, you'll be limited to the same tile system and probably the same terrain tiles, so your world will closely resemble the Avernum world visually.

For an idea of how a new world can be created, download Blades of Exile and fiddle with the scenario editor. You could even buy it (yes, it's a great buy, cheap for the hours of fun you'll get out of it, buy it!) and play other people's scenarios to get an idea of how a new world can be created. Blades of Avernum will be similar, except obviously it will use the Avernum engine.

—Alorael, who supposes one could, with some work, even come up with a scenario that takes place in a futuristic setting. Such large departures from the Avernum setting would be difficult, but they will (probably) be possible.

Probably even more possible than it was in BoE, perhaps even probable!

Have you played Masks, Quintessence, or the Spheres trilogy? Brett/Void Master has made some of the best worlds in his scenarios. And none of them look like Avernum or Exile.

Actually, it will probably be harder to do that in Avernum, due to the complexity of terrain graphics.

Aye-yei-yei... "complex terrain graphics" is right, though I believe I'll be done with my snowy, desert, and "enhanced" mountains soon.

And who says you can't create your own world?!

The complex graphic issue is the main reason I want to get a graphics DB running now. No sense in holding development of a good game up because graphics aren't available! :D

Err... while we're on the subject, put the link in your signature thinge so the newer people can find it! And I'll send you some of my currently already done stuff soon (about 20 items) and I'll send you my terrains soon. Wait that's all off subject...

But really, the possibilites are near limitless when you have a creative mind and soon good (or bad, bad works too) graphics! So feel free to pitch in and join our community!

No. It won't be available for some time.

Drakefyre, I've played all of those. In saying that it would look the same, I was thinking about the spells/skills, not graphics. (In most cases that will be true of graphics as well, though.)

I would think the terrain graphics are simply using textures applied to the object (if it uses a 3d engine of some type). If it's just using simple bitmaps, I would think replacing those bitmaps would do the trick.

Does anybody know if they will use that same silly flags system for setting variables (they could allow specifying names instead of that system and make it a LOT easier)?

Because right now you'd have to have Excel to make a decent list of those flags.

Or, you could just forget which flags you used (like me) and just playtest it and find out where things went wrong.

There will actually be real variables in Blades of Avernum.

With the terrain graphics, they're just bitmaps, but nobody wants to go about changing them besides hue and saturation changes.

Namothil, in BoA you'll at least be able to limit the spell and skill sets.

Avernum games don't use a REAL 3d rendering engine, it's all 2d bitmaps (or whatever).

Also, about skills and spells:

With special items and abilities, you can even introduce new skills and spells.

Don't confuse them man!

New skills/spells in the form of scripted little abilities of items or the such, not new spells in that pop-up menu. Or at least I don't think...

Also I had a burning question but I'll wait til I'm sure of what I'm asking before asking. Make sense?

We don't have it. It's not released yet. But Blades of Exile is.

I think he means BoE. You can download a demo by clicking on the "Our Games" link on the bottom of any page on the website, or on the main page.
You can make the graphics using just about any drawing program, like MSPaint or ResEdit. I think Brett has a webpage with the graphic specs. I recommend you use them if you plan to make graphics, so you don't end up making them the wrong shape or size.

What they are making are Blades of Avernum graphics, which conform to the graphics used in Avernum 3. These graphics files are editable using standard applications (like MS Paint, if you're a masochist, or Paint Shop Pro, if you have self-respect, or Photoshop, if I hate you).

To reiterate, no components of Blades of Avernum have been released, but useful assumptions can be made from Jeff Vogel's previous statements and the previous Avernum games.

I hope that helps.

Yes, another PSP supporter / Photoshop hater. I'm not alone it seems.

Avernum style grpahics really aren't as difficult as they look, I've found walls and floors to be a breeze. The only issue is finding good textures to use. You should start with a base tile, a seamless ( Only horizontally ) tile 23 pixels across by 30 - 34 pixels down... from there, everything else should come naturally.

-------------------

Oh ya, if you are using PSP, there's a function built right into the program for making seamless textures. Yet another advantage over Photoshop. ( Like it needs one.. variations? What is this?? I colourize my pics by RGB. PSP to life! )

No, BoA will not be free. It will be shareware, just like the rest of spiderweb's games.

As for the other question:
1. Why does it matter?
2. Most people aren't making graphics databases. Just send your graphics to someone who is.
