I would think the terrain graphics are simply using textures applied to the object (if it uses a 3d engine of some type). If it's just using simple bitmaps, I would think replacing those bitmaps would do the trick. Does anybody know if they will use that same silly flags system for setting variables (they could allow specifying names instead of that system and make it a LOT easier)?
