I think that oldbiehood comes in a series of relative, ever-increasing number of levels, generated by the time span in which one joins, and the time span in which one posts.
Assuming that you go active as soon as you join, people who join and are active in a span of time before you are oldbier than you. People who join before you but go active after you are generally as oldbie as you, if not less so. Those who join after you... well, you get the idea.
Furthermore, there are sub-levels of oldbiehood, which are determined by the contribution both in quantity and quality of said posts and the commnuity reputation that someone gains over time. Higher postage and higher quality postage and high community opinion all raise someone up within a chronological level of olbiehood over a person who, say, posts once a week and only spams when doing so. No posting proceeds in a sever drop in sub-levels, perhaps even past a lower level.
Now, the upper sub-levels of a level of oldbiehood may cross the lower levels of a higher chronological level of oldbiehood, so that people with bad reputation or low postage rates are not necessarily considered as oldbie-ish as people who join after them and post quality material all of the time.

Hmm. This could seriously use some form of visual aid.

Visual aid is required for this particular post.

People seriously use the term "oldbie"?

The results of this poll, by the way, are relatively amusing to me - they clearly show that, while Alorael's massive post count is clearly visible to anyone and everyone, our community's remaining antediluvians are less obviously apparent.

Hmm. Oldbies. Well, the classic ones from when I was new, since then no one. I don't consider myself an oldbie, not - well - a classic one, although I have been here for some four years, and so anyone after me certainly isn't an oldbie. Also not Slartucker, since he only started posting much later.

But actually, I rather think oldbie is just some kind of honorary memory, that doesn't really matter anymore. Now we're all just little older and a little newer Spidwebbers. Being an 'oldbie', well... I just don't see it. It's not really part of Spidweb board community as it was back then.

There are so many possible definitions... :P

1. You are an oldbie when only a few people snicker when you declare yourself to be one. You are a noob when your declaration of oldbiehood is met by loud laughter.

2. Everybody who was around before you is an oldbie. Everybody who got here after you is a newbie.

3. You are an oldbie if and only if you recognize all of the following:
a) IMAGE(http://img54.imageshack.us/img54/5278/tempql7.gif)
b) BEEP
c) IMAGE(http://img65.imageshack.us/img65/2577/temppx1.gif)

Wait, didn't someone derive a formula for calculating the level of oldbiehood a few months back? I don't remember much, other than that the letters for each term taken together spelt something.

EDIT: Clarity

See, things like this make me indecisive. You clearly have no problems poking fun at yourself, which is a sign of oldbisity. Perhaps you are a tweenie? Capable of seeing and participating in both sides, yet part of neither.

Imban, being recognized as an oldbie requires having been around previously, having posted with some frequency previously, and posting enough now that people know who you are.

—Alorael, who recognizes Zeviz's ancient icons of Spiderweb despite not being that much of an oldbie. Speaking of which, isn't it time for another short-lived and unsuccessful BEEP knock-off?

I hopefully post with enough frequency that people know who I am.

And being recognized as an oldbie requires being around previously to what?

Nalyd has been completely forgotten here. And after all the work he's done! He has half a mind to leave in a puff of ban-wishing spam.

Sorry, just had to say that. Yuk, yuk.

Previously to the advent of these boards, presumably.

I voted Alorael as an oldbie, but not Kelandon or anyone later. Not entirely sure why.

Personalities. I told him off a couple times for posting just to tell someone they earned some sort of point in that book.

EDIT TO ABOVE POST: *groan*

Ah. I remember he used to appear in a cloud of little red Graemlins and leave a post something like that.

EDIT: Copy that, Nioca. *double groan.*

Yes! Hatred!

And the graemlins were for not appearing in Episode Three. He still won't, even with the newbies coming. You just watch.

Ironically enough, the only newbie Dikiyoba specified as entering the story was you. Take that as you will.

My groan was one of anticipation of great annoyance. And yes, Dikiyoba the Great did specify you as entering the storyline. I sense an awkward silence upcoming.

That's not necessarily true. For instance, I'm a newbie and I know I am.

I pretty much voted everybody that I knew, other than ED, that came before me. Probably not what most people think, but for me those are the oldbies.
