For everyone who keeps even just one eye on the sports world, this isn't news anymore. But this past Wednesday, Cory Lidle, a pitcher for the New York Yankees, died after he crashed into a 50-story building.

I for one am left wondering what Major League Baseball should do about it, or if the Yankees should do something. But I have a feeling that one of his past teams will be retiring his number.

But anyway, since General's been a ghost town as of late, I thought I'd contribute a topic from my realm of interest.

Finding another pitcher would be a good start.

Well, yeah... but the Yankees were eliminated from the playoffs on Saturday, so that's not quite a priority for them at this point.

Tragic. I offer my condolences to his family and friends. I sure hope his son is all right... I know what it's like to lose your father at a young age.

That said, there's something about this crash that seems... off. But unless something else about this comes up, I'll keep my suspicions to myself.

... a rival team conspired to have him assassinated?

I can't fathom what other suspicions you might have.

In one of the lines at lunch today, the guy distributing dishes to the various buffets stopped and expressed condolances over Lidle to a man ahead of me in line who was wearing a Yankees t-shirt.
The dish guy (who happens to be the senior class clown) then gave the sports fan a hug and told him that he had his respect for wearing the shirt, even after his team had been eliminated.
The man in the Yankees shirt, apparently unfamiliar with said dish guy's infamous antics, was so disturbed by this incident that he left the line and walked away.

What does this have to do with the MLB response to Cory Lidle?
Absolutely nothing. I just thought it was a funny thing to happen.

Then why even bring it up?

Unfortunately, small plane crashes are a fairly frequent occurance, so there's nothing "off" about that in itself.

At least we know that Homeland Security can protect us from dangerous aircraft.

—Alorael, who suspects an attempted building theft. It's a good thing that 50-story building was solidly anchored.

Dikiyoba.

The reason I wasn't voicing my suspicions was because this could easily be a tragic accident, and there's no need to lay blame where it isn't due. There's just a few circumstantial things that, in my opinion, send up some red flags.

FACT: Lidle signed on only recently with the New York Yankees.

FACT: The Yankees were defeated by the Detroit Tigers, which many consider to be a far inferior team, who are using a brand new line-up of young players.

FACT: Because of the Yankees loss this early in the season, the whole team will make a multi-million dollar loss on contracts.

FACT: Furthermore, the coach now has the risk of losing his job.

FACT: The plane crashed by making a sudden, sharp left turn right into the building.

SKETCHY: According to one of the first news reports, the plane had already gone past the building when it made the sharp turn. In other words, in order to collide with the building, the plane would have had to make a U-turn.

Now, as I said before, there is a good chance this was purely an accident. Then again, there's also a small chance that foul play was involved (No pun intended). And even if the plane hadn't gone past the building, I find it hard to believe that he pulled a sharp left turn, mechanical failure or not, into a building.

FACT: There was a second, unidentified person on the plane.
It was his flight instructor, who was aged 26 and named Tyler Stranger, but wasn't one.

Sounds pretty identified to me.

Not that I'm calling you uninformed or a conspiracy theorist or anything.

Fixed. And I do tend to over-analyze things. I just thought it was interesting about all of these so-called 'coincidences'.

I just was wondering why someone would learn to fly a plane when there are lots of tall buildings around. Guess it's just me.

Actually, from what I heard on a recent news report, he shouldn't have been flying there. I only caught bits and pieces of the report, but from what I heard, the airspace was banned to small planes.

Hell, for all we know maybe he saw a hot chick on a billboard, turned around to get a better look, misjudged his turn and went into the building. There are lots of things that might have happened, and without further evidence it's silly to speculate.

Anyone who has been following baseball at all this past season shouldn't find this surprising. The Tigers have been phenomenal all season long. Also, remember that this was the playoffs. Any team that makes it even to the first round is pretty darn good.

No no no, there are no billboards around that area. On another note, that was pretty scary. My friend AIMed me and asked me "You live in Manhattan, right?", to which I responded "No, but half of my family does, why?". So she goes "Well a plane just crashed into a building in Manhattan ". By this point, I'm freaking out and ask her "Where?". But of course, she didn't know the location. And it took me exactly 15 min of panic to find out that it was an aircraft in 72nd ST.
It was a horrible event, but I'm just glad that it wasn't worse. Imagine if it were occur a couple of hours later, after people came home from work, and kids from school.

It was reported that the plane experienced mechanical problems while flying up the East River after a few laps around the Statue of Liberty. The pilot then suddenly came up with a comeback for that cruel insult hurled by a disgruntled fan on Sunday afternoon.

Tragically, execution of said comeback was Lidle's final act. The fan survived, but was severely burned when her new balcony was delivered.

Friday the 13th was amazing... took part in an improv comedy show, watched the Cardinals pull off the most amazing comeback ever over the Mets, and then watched a movie that I'm still having a hard time believing: Shark Attack 3: Megalodon.

From what the news seemed to put together, it looks as though it was just a perfect storm of insufficient fuel, a poor flight path choice, and probably wacky winds that led to the calamity.

As for the Yankees, they can suck on it. Oh no, they didn't make the playoffs for the first time in forever. Welcome to the world of Washington Nationals fandom.
