I've been looking through Arancaytar's board stats (and would also like to say that that's an awesome job by Aran), but I noticed something interesting.

Looking through the banned members list, I noticed WKS (WildKarrde/WiKiSpiderweb) is banned. Excuse me for not noticing this until right now, but when and how did this happen.

For those of you who wonder why I'm surprised at his banning, it's because he's been pretty active at the Lyceum and he beta tested my first two scenarios, FER and ND. He's been a judge for some BoE scenario contests. Plus he nominated me for the Hall of Fame twice.

I'm not trying to start a riot over his banning, I just would like to know when and how this happened, and whether or not he will come back. Thank you.

He posted a large chunk of the Kama Sutra in TM's moniker thread, which caused errors in the thread and which does bad things to the boards in general. He was booked for two counts of lewd and licentious material and one count of obnoxiousness.

—Alorael, who does have to say that this is the only banning of a generally stable poster that has not resulted in an outcry. It's nice, actually.

WKS posted the Kama Sutra in TM's moniker thread, resulting in the destruction of said thread.

I could throw a fit if you like. My heart really isn't in it because WKS is a reactionary, he was doing what he did to screw with TM, and what he posted was pretty bluntly inappropriate and unprecedented, but you know how I like throwing fits.

Would you? You haven't had a good fit in weeks, and I could use the entertainment.

—Alorael, who still doesn't think that would make up for the lack of public outcry. Surely someone has the admins, hates the mods, hates Spiderweb, and hates haters.

I've had two weeks of watching my extended family throw fits. It would be nice to just read about it instead.

Throw the fit.

I'm going to throw a fit instead over the fact that people have problems with posting passages from the Kama Sutra.

Can you imagine the public outcry that will occur if Alec decides not to throw that fit?

It wasn't so much what he posted that bothers me as the fact a large chunk of text unrelated to the topic was posted just to crash the thread. It would have crashed in a few days or weeks from normal postings without having such a severe effect on the boards. If he wanted to start a new thread to post text for the sake of seeing a crash I wouldn't have cared as much.

The fact that a thread lock warning had occurred only recently over that thread crashing the board only adds to the offense.

As resident Defender of the Indefensible, I am duty-bound to inveigh in WKS's favor as follows:

The Administration took an unusually harsh and vindictive step in banning WKS. While it can be genuinely argued that his posting was an effort to destroy TM's topic, it is just as likely that it was a continuation of the proud tradition of filibustering, alive and well with SW oldbies (to which he admittedly aspired without justification, being an irredeemable newbie), wherein an excessive volume of text is poured into an offensive topic in the hope of provoking some kind of reaction, possibly moderatorial but more generally community-minded.

The allegations against him include that he deliberately attempted to break the boards (which I have fielded); that he attacked an artifact of the community; that he engaged in inappropriate behavior as to so attack; and that he used smut in so doing.

TM's name topic is no more deserving of reverence than TM himself. While it was a notable and enduring part of the community in spite of its blatant offensiveness and lack of actual purpose besides sating TM's vanity (once more, like TM himself), idolizing it and raising it above reproach is basically inappropriate. In my time I have assaulted topics which I did not enjoy with the full text of Kafka's Metamorphosis, the Communist Manifesto, and the Treaty of Westphalia. WKS remained within his rights to do so. His boldness in filibustering General's largest active topic and TM's golden baby cannot be denied.

Further, it has been alleged that the material with which he engaged in this historic action was lewd and inappropriate. To this I say: balderdash. The Kama Sutra is a religious document on the appropriate nature of sexual and romantic relationships, written in the clinical tone typical of ancient religious documents discussing sexual ritual, and is no more lewd than a frank discussion of the mechanics of menstruation. While certainly disruptive, it was by no means lewd, and punishing him for the selection of that document is ridiculous. If he had selected, say, some long Kinsey Report document released into the public domain, he would doubtless have been punished more leniently.

On each of the counts of which WKS stands accused, one is entirely debatable, one is entirely meaningless, and the two remaining are not without precedent separately (while comprising a wholly unique event in and of themselves) and entirely unworthy of the punishment assessed in any event.

Can I please stop defending someone who intentionally broke the board with the closest thing to porn his dull, Republican brains could tolerate in order to air-hump at TM now?

Please.

How is it that TM always somehow avoids a banning lately?

TM hasn't actually done anything to merit banning recently.

And there isn't anything in the CoC forbidding being TM. Yet.

1) He broke General by killing the thread (probably knowingly). I could care less about the thread.

2) The Kama Sutra is inappropriate for these messageboards, whether it's seen by angry 8-year-olds or septugenarian eskimos.

EDIT: It's a two-week ban.

Drakefyre, you must now ban yourself for use of a secondary account!

Also, "could care less" is one of the most illogical idioms I know. Wouldn't "couldn't care less" make much more sense?

Yes. The phrase "could care less" is entirely wrong and senseless, and I've heard that it damages your potency, too.

Seriously, it's one of the worst errors I've ever heard, bad because it makes no sense and worse because it's very common.

As far as WKS, though, he'll be back in a couple of weeks if he wants, so it's not that big a deal.

This is why I've never understood these temporary bans. The person who has been banned will be back soon enough, so what's the point of the ban in the first place?

Recent scientifically based studies have proven within a shadow of a doubt that self imposed absences from the messageboards can stand up in court as surrogate bannings, which act as get-out-of-jail-free cards in the case of bannings based on temporary sanity.

Temporary insanity generally is punished by lifetime bannings.

It was a good rant, but not really a fit. I give it a 6.3 because it was obvious your heart was not bleeding. If you don't like the review, tough cookies.

(If only I could remember where I srole that quote from!)

And temporary bans are probably designed to a be a deterrant - presumably, people's lives fall apart if they are banned, and they then decide not to be wicked again. Or whatever. I dunno.

It's more serious than a warning. It shows we're not to be reckoned with. If they try to evade it, then it's a permaban. If they break the rules again, it's a permaban.

Remember that this is a board for spidweb's games: the more people can freely talk about the games they enjoy without being hassled, etc., the better the forums are.
