Just as a note: In English, questions that are answered with yes/no are not usually formed by writing it like a statement with a question mark. The word order changes:

"Is my signature too long? Do I have to change it?"

It is a bit long, yes. It's even longer than mine...

I'd suggest using only one funny quote and removing the last part. Eeveryone knows your posts are "Written by MagmaDragoon"; that's what it says next to your post! :)

Um...point of the poll?

Do whatever you want. At least until people start to complain. It's your signature and it doesn't appear to be breaking any rules.

Dikiyoba gave a more thorough answer in the Geneforge Forum. Dikiyoba is too lazy to go find it and repeat it here.

You know, if you wanted us to be able to vote, it would have been nice to actually give us time to do so instead of having the poll stop the minute you started the topic.

Having said that, your signature is kinda long. Shorten it.

I'm all for no signatures, or at most, signatures that contain useful links. Quotes get stale quickly.

Hear hear, Drew!

For reference, Magma, your signature takes up 18 lines on my screen, which is more than half my typical browser window.

Aran, yours takes up 13 lines, more than a third the window.

Seriously guys, it's pretty dumb, it's just information clutter that makes it take longer and be more annoying to read the boards.

You know, we could require that all posts be longer than the signature below them.

Oops. If my English teacher see that, my mark will get VERY low. ( :D )
Sorry.

Oh. I forgot to modify the day. Sorry again.

Anyway, I will change it.

EDIT: Finally, a NEW SIG! Enjoy.

But it's such a very deep quote.

Ah well.

Anyway, it took some time to find the translation, so I hope nobody will mind if I put it in this post in case I need to find it again.

quote:
---
"If he lifts himself up and disturbs the stars with his head,
Then nowhere are anchored his uncertain feet, and with him sport the clouds and the wind.
If instead he stands with firm, vigorous bones, upon the enduring earth,
He does not reach up even to the oak tree, or the vine to compare." Goethe, Limits of Humanity

Now that I actually read it and think about it for a moment, which I never did when it was in your signature, I agree. Would you perhaps be able to supply the original, too?

Unfortunately, having just finished a gruelling statistics course, all I think about when I see Aran's quote is the balance between Type I and Type II error. :P

Mh. I never looked at it that way. (I haven't yet reached Type I/II errors in Statistics, but I read about them and I think my dad explained them to me once).

--

The original poem (at Wikisource):

(The emphasized section was my sig)

quote:
Wenn der uralte
Heilige Vater
Mit gelassener Hand
Aus rollenden Wolken
Segnende Blitze
Über die Erde sät
Küss' ich den letzten
Saum seines Kleides,
Kindliche Schauer
Treu in der Brust.

Denn mit Göttern
Soll sich nicht messen
Irgend ein Mensch.
Hebt er sich aufwärts
Und berührt
Mit dem Scheitel die Sterne,
Nirgends haften dann
Die unsichern Sohlen,
Und mit ihm spielen
Wolken und Winde.

Steht er mit festen,
Markigen Knochen
Auf der wohlgegründeten
Dauernden Erde,
Reicht er nicht auf,
Nur mit der Eiche
Oder der Rebe
Sich zu vergleichen.

Was unterscheidet
Götter von Menschen?
Dass viele Wellen
Vor jenen wandeln,
Ein ewiger Strom:
Uns hebt die Welle,
Verschlingt die Welle,
Und wir versinken.

Ein kleiner Ring
Begrenzt unser Leben,
Und viele Geschlechter
Reihen sie dauernd,
An ihres Daseins
Unendliche Kette.
Which is, translated:

quote:

When the ancient
Holy father
With calm hand
From the rolling clouds
Sends blessed lightning
Over the earth,
I kiss the last
Seam of his cloak
With a childlike awe
Deep in my breast.

For with gods
Shall never compete
Mortal Man:

If he lifts himself up
And disturbs
The stars with his head,
Then nowhere are anchored
His uncertain feet,
And with him sport
The clouds and the wind.

If instead he stands with firm,
Vigorous bones,
Upon the enduring earth,
He does not reach up
Even to the oak tree,
Or the vine
To compare.

What distinguishes
Gods from Men?
That many a wave broke
Before the one came wandering -
An eternal stream:
The wave lifts us;
Yet gulp in the water,
And we drown.

A small ring
Limits our life,
And many generations
String past constantly,
Their existences forming
An endless chain.
You can see that the whole poem is a lot more fatalistic (even blindly obedient towards a deity) than I usually appear myself. However, the two stanzas I quoted describe a dilemma I can identify with, in a certain sense. It seems like a rift between realism and fantasy.

I fail.

—Alorael, who regularly toys with the idea of putting links in his signature. Since there's nothing constant about it, he'd just have to choose random words, which is an appealing concept. The only obstacle is the effort of putting in those tags. He already spends enough time on signatures and name changes.

My favourite quote from Goethe, (I think it's Goethe) is the one about life and art being different. I can't actually remember what it is right now, but I have it inside my locker at college.

And tags can be fun Alorael. Jeez, I hope somebody goes blind looking at that. If I ever have to type and then again...

Edit: My signature is nice and short, Diki.

Using both of those spellings is odd, but both are accepted ways to spell the word. The British spell it with an 'A', while Americans spell it without that 'A'.

My signature is rather long and I've never seen any problem with it. It could somehow shorten it though by going horizontally instead of taking so much room down the page.

A signature should never be longer than the post it follows. ;)

Be careful with a word, as you would with a sword,
For it too has the power to kill.
However well placed word, unlike a well placed sword,
Can also have the power to heal.
