Hey, you can be the fan of a robot... Who didn't think Asimov's R. Daneel Olivaw (Foundation Series) was awesome? :) [ Monday, March 20, 2006 05:23: Message edited by: Arancaytar ] -------------------- Encyclopaedia Ermariana • Forum Archives • Forum Statistics • RSS [Topic / Forum] My Blog • Polaris • I eat novels for breakfast. I could never get over his name. That went for most of Asimov's characters. I kept thinking, "what, did he just get tired of coming up with decent names, so he changed a random letter in a common name?" Then I read one of his essays in which he explained that yes, that was exactly what he did. Pfft. -------------------- Slarty vs. Desk • Desk vs. Slarty • Timeline of Ermarian • G4 Strategy Central Posts: 3560 | Registered: Wednesday, November 7 2001 08:00 |

Funny. That was what I assumed he did, without ever reading his essays. :P Still, I wonder if you could introduce yourself to some Asimov fan as "Robert Daniel Oliver", and how long it would take for them to figure it out... -------------------- Encyclopaedia Ermariana • Forum Archives • Forum Statistics • RSS [Topic / Forum] My Blog • Polaris • I eat novels for breakfast. Happy birthday, Rosy. I miss you, wherever you are, though I'll admit I'd never have thought I'd ever do so when you were here. You kept things interesting, though. I see no reason not to have a moment of silence for Rachel Corrie, but I agree wholeheartedly with Zeviz and Drakey. I'll leave it at that. I'm glad you've removed the list, Aran. I find it hard to believe that anyone doesn't think that was a major factor in the useless spamming that goes on here. I'm not anti-spam, per se; there's useful spam and there's useless spam. Since Alorael's got such an iron monopoly on the former, the n00bs weren't left with much of a choice but to post the latter type or not post spam at all. N00bs are notoriously bad decision-makers. You know, I don't challenge the admins' decision, but I wish arghhhhhhhhh were still around. I can't be the only one who found the guy absolutely hilarious, can I? -------------------- And though the musicians would die, the music would live on in the imaginations of all who heard it. -The Last Pendragon Polaris = joy. He was, for the most part. You might have missed the last bit toward the end where he lost it and posted around 5-6 topics filled with random caps in order to get banned... -------------------- Encyclopaedia Ermariana • Forum Archives • Forum Statistics • RSS [Topic / Forum] My Blog • Polaris • I eat novels for breakfast. I miss argh as well, and I defended him on several occasions, but in the end he had to go. -------------------- Slarty vs. Desk • Desk vs. Slarty • Timeline of Ermarian • G4 Strategy Central Posts: 3560 | Registered: Wednesday, November 7 2001 08:00 |

Argh* and Ed were so unstable that I wondered whether they weren't masquerades. In the end I figured it would be equally weird either way, and didn't matter anyway. -------------------- We're not doing cool. We're doing pretty. Posts: 3335 | Registered: Thursday, September 4 2003 07:00 |

If you replaced "neutrons" with some equivalent fundamental particle of annoyance. A spamion? No, that sounds odd. -------------------- Encyclopaedia Ermariana • Forum Archives • Forum Statistics • RSS [Topic / Forum] My Blog • Polaris • I eat novels for breakfast. "... emitting irks all over the place" :P I like that picture. By the way: what is Ed's and Argh*'s half-life? Will they come back soon? I miss Ed's whining self-mortification. He was? Cripes, those books started getting bad towards the end, but I didn't think Asimov would sink that far. -------------------- SupaNik: Aran, you're not big enough to threaten Ash. Dammit, even JV had to think twice. Posts: 1861 | Registered: Friday, February 11 2005 08:00 |

After Asimov wrote Opus 100 it appears that he was going for the literary equivalent of post count. Opus 200 confirmed it. Most of his later collections were rehashed of his older works with short introductions and material he couldn't get published in his early days. If you read them you'll understand why. He seemed to become obsessed with the convergence of almost all his science fiction stories into one coherent timeline. The last Foundation books proved it.
