Here are some personal preferences:

Avernum 3 good points:
better graphics;
in 3D (which means it has heights);
Nicer special effects (for as far as I remember).

bad points:
can't think of any at the moment.

exile 3 good points:
Some people say you fely more like you were right there, fighting together with your party. I never felt that, but maybe you do.

bad points:
I hate the graphics;
very static, if you understand what I mean;
it's 2D, which isn't that bad, but I do appreciate the 3D environment of Avernum 3.

Avernum isn't 3D, it's isometric. Also, I hate Avernum's graphics. I like Exile's graphics, personally.

It's a matter of preference, really. Go with whichever game you like better.

I vote E3.

EDIT: Actually, if you get E3, you should get the bundle with E1, 2, and 3 for only $45. That's a $30 savings over buying them separately.

I would say E3, but I haven't played A3. I do like Exile graphics better than Avernum graphics myself, however.

I like the Exile 3 graphics better as well. There are no hills to obscure your view.

I like the Exile 3 inventory system better too, but there are nefarious reasons behind that.

If you've played the demos, you already know how the games are different. We can't tell you which graphics and gameplay are better in your opinion.

—Alorael, who would recommend buying the trilogy CD of whichever game you buy. The Avernum CD saves you $20.

I would have to say Exile. Avernum has superb graphics, but I personally think that there is more to do in Exile. Perhaps I am influenced by that I played Exile first, but I'm not sure. :-P

I've always heard that the Avernum games actually included a few extra quests that weren't present in the Exile series.

In any case, the argument for Exile 3 vs. Avernum 3 seems to depend on which you played first. If you don't think there's something terribly wrong with A3, though, you should probably get that one simply because it's newer. ;)

Oh, and are we to assume that you've already played the earlier ones? Because if you haven't I recommend E2/A2 over their respective third installments.

I second that.

However, if you decide to go with Avernum, you may just want to go with Avernum 4, or if you're on Windows, wait for Avernum 4.

Buy Exile III. It's much more classic-looking without being too confusing or archaic. It's kind of more pleasantly traditional, and gives more the impression of the medieval environment it's kind of based after. Plus, it's a lot more vibrant and has more character than Avernum seems to.

thanks everyone!
it's because i hadn't played either of them in ages that i was just after a reminder. think i will go with exile though, it just seems to have a more 'homely' sort of feel if you see what i mean?! plus i did play it fist as well so probably would influence it.
thanks again

I third the BoE suggestion. Perhaps when you finish E3?

I also recommend BoE. Excellent value, that BoE. Hundreds of scenarios, many of at least decent quality, several of truly excellent quality. Some are full-length epic adventures, while some are short and sweet. Definitely a good buy, if you like the Exile engine.
