Guys,

I was just randomly googling the web for another game, and happened to fund these sites:

http://www.comcast.net/games/playgames/details.jsp?fn=download/geneforge
http://www.comcast.net/games/playgames/details.jsp?fn=download/geneforge2

At first I thought that they were legal versions that Spidweb sells to this company (like shareware companies do), but then I took a look at the Prices.

You can buy Geneforge 1 for $14.99, and GF2 for $19.99

Considering we have to pay $25 from spidweb for these games, I'm wondering if this is legal. Should I email JV about this?

Thanks for your input.

- Archmagus Micael

EDIT: Emailed Jeff about this, and he said that it was al legal, in fact, he makes good money from it, so it's all okay.

You'd think that since it's Comcast, it'd be legit. Murr.

The page doesn't seem to give Spiderweb Software any credit, but what they're offering for download is only the free demo, which unless tampered with should say clearly who made it, and I don't think that they are trying to sell it themselves, though I can't tell very well because the 'Buy' button seems to decide that I have the wrong OS and send me somewhere useless. I'm guessing there's no problem.

On the off chance of this being legitimate, I'll say this: I have no idea who Comcast are. This is unsuprising, nobody can know every company that exists. So I'm siding with the devil I know.

I would be highly sceptical of this being legal. There is the possiblity of this "Comcast" subsidising your purchase by paying Jeff the difference. But this is utterly illogical.

Far more likely is that they are selling a product they don't own, or running a scam. When in doubt, buy direct from the manufacturer.

Comcast is a well known American supplier of wire-based services (cable tv, internet and phone) and it may be that Jeff hooked up a sweet deal where he got lump-summed and gave them the rights to distribute those two games at those prices. They certainly have a wider audience than spidweb.com and the shareware cds.

You might go ahead anyways and drop Jeff a line to verify that this is the case. Otherwise they may have the prices wrong, but if you can buy direct from them, without Jeff's permission, it just screams out keygen. I wonder if you did buy from them, and then needed a reinstall, if Jeff would supply a new key??

You know, why the Sliths are green - because of their scales.

Maybe you know why some slith eyes were once red - ´cause the demons, which led them were red.

But why are the eyes of the Slith Lord Followers red? Because they see the remains of their enemies always before the battle begins!

The "Buy" link goes straight to RealArcade, which is a company which we already know that Jeff has an agreement with. There's nothing shady going on here. Move along.

(By the way, as I understand it, they're able to offer lower prices than SW because they buy fewer copies than they have players and relicense them out to players while they're playing. Players play through an online client, and can only play if at least one copy of the game isn't already in use by someone else. Something like that, anyway.)

One of the things I really love about doing business with Spiderweb is that I can visualize the entire transaction. I download the demo, play it, send the code to Jeff along with $32, he sends me the key, I type it in and unlock the rest of the game, and a hintbook arrives in the mail a few days later.

A real person actually does the order processing. I can wrap my little brain around that and it makes me all warm and fuzzy inside.

My first order took around forty minutes to process, from the time I sent the email asking what discounts apply (and how they accumulate), to the time I entered the code into the game. :)
