An interesting idea occurred to me concerning Vahnatai Creationism and Geneforge. It seems that the New Factory of Exile/Avernum 3 and its generating of living creatures was the beginnings of the idea for Shaping and the Geneforge.

However, perhaps the Geneforge came first. Think of the possible connection! The world of the Shapers contains two known continents and the continent of the Sholai. Is there perhaps a fourth, undiscovered continent? Are the two worlds actually one and the same? Is Geneforge actually the pre-history of Ermarian? It seems quite possible.

Are the Vahnatai the decedents of humans who altered themselves? Are dragons the end result of drakon shaping? Are Eyebeasts and Gazers the distant children of...Eyebeasts and Gazers? Serviles were making themselves bigger, brawnier, and badder. Did this lead to Troglodytes? Are Ogres the progeny of Thads? Are Giants the evolutionary path of Battle Alphas? Is the Spiny Worm a full-grown...Spined Worm?

The parallels seem very intriguing. True, you could argue, "Where are the vlish and fyoras?" However, the Empire has a long-standing policy of the genocide of non-human races and magical creatures. Extinction of a few races is not implausible.

Perhaps the Vahnatai did create everything. Or, rather, they shaped everything. The Shaper/Rouge war could very easily have completely destroyed civilization with the shaped humans being driven to find refuge underground. Perhaps the collapse of civilization left the Sholai, on a distant continent, to eventually form the Empire.

An interesting concept, yes?

Nice idea.

It would be nice if it was true, but I can make an educated guess which says it isn't.

Nice theory. It probably isn't how things really are, but you never know.....
And even if it's not true, it still makes for an interesting bit of conversation.

I imagine that Drakefyre would be interested in this. Either that or he's already thought of it.

Let's just see how Avernum 4 flows before getting too much of a mindset on this...

It's not necessarily intended to be new canon, simply a possible alternate theory.

Quantum theory makes all of this possible (and more).

Who knows what turns evolution may take? I think the fyoras could evolve into sliths, but since sliths were originally in Avernum, not the surface, I guess not.

Maybe a pack of fyoras found the portal somehow without the Empire knowing and thought, Ooh, shiny!, and hurried in. The Avernites weren't yet civilized, and when the fyoras arrived, they flamed everyone there, ran off, and then settled in a nearby cave. They then mated with giant lizards, and their kin couldn't breathe fire. I guess that seems reasonable, if far-fetched.

Fyoras could also have evolved into Fire Lizards, and Cryoas into Ice Lizards.

Perhaps Drayks became Sliths, moving into narrow caverns and losing their wings there through lack of use.

And any other non-Geneforge races (Nephils for example) are easily explained by the wanton shaping that occured during the war.

And the drayks following the altered humans below ground would be plausible. Perhaps the rouges won, obliterating the Shapers and the only remaining humans (thus being on the side of the rouges) gave in to alteration and became the predecessors of the Vahnatai. The ruthless Drakons, by then well on their way to being Dragons, would likely have considered themselves the rulers of everyone. The Proto-Vahnatai and Drayks may have fled underground to avoid slavery.

I was thinking of making a scenario on BoA with a backstory like this, where the Vahnatai learned how to Shape and took over the original Shapers's territory, then fled underground when they discovered Geneforge-altering and the monstrosities available to Geneforge users.

A nice and plausible theory. Although it may be a little unpropable, this could be the way things really are...

And what, the Nephlim just appeared out of nowhere? :P

Interesting ideas though. I doubt Jeff created his games with that intention, though. But still, well done.
