The Quake series was, is, and shall ever be superior to Halo.

Halo is awesome! Halo 2 is pretty cool, too. I also really like the story, and really, what other FPS has a real story to it? Most of them are just generic demons from hell, random aliens, etc. You should definately read the books if you can, too. I liked them. They aren't the most well-written things ever (numerous typos, and some grammar-os...), but for books about an FPS, they're really good! Lots of weird stuff going on that they only hint to. Bungie even has a whole (very secret) "Halo Bible" with all kinds of plot stuff in it that's only hinted to in the game and books. If you're interested, try googling for "the cortana letters" and "ilovebees" to find out more cool stuff about it. Also, check out the (old) Marathon series by Bungie, there are a lot of paralells between the games.

How about Half-Life/Half-Life 2? Or Return to Castle Wolfenstein? Or System Shock/System Shock 2? Or most of them out there with the exception of the tournament-oriented games?

I hate Halo.

I can think of a thousand other shooters I'd rather play that have actual creative plots.

That or mindless killing, which Halo doesn't do too well, either.

Edit, for clarification: shooters ARE my main genre. So yes, I know them. That, and Action-RPGs.

I haven't played Halo, but System Shock 2 is the gold standard for shooters as far as I'm concerned.

If you think the plot sucks, you haven't been paying attention! I mean, the game, like any other FPS is made so you don't have to pay any attention to the plot, and can just randomly go through it without paying any attention to it, but that doesn't have anything to do with the plot being bad. I suggest you play through it again and pay attention to the plot this time. You also get a lot more out of it reading the books, too. After you read the books it's good to play through again, because you understand a lot more of what's going on that isn't necessary for the in-game plot, but is still hinted to in the game.

Notice the little details. These things aren't answered directly in game, but some can be inferred from it.

Why is there a yellow (yellow armor = high ranking = ship/fleet master) elite standing behind the door in Silent Cartographer?

Why are there very big doors in the library?

How did the Pillar of Autumn find Halo? It wasn't an accident...

Why is Covenant technology so much like stuff you find on Halo?

Covenant, Flood, Halo, see the pattern here? Though it's not known how far this pattern goes.

I could go on and on, and on and on... but there are already pages and pages and pages and pages of information about the plot, in various levels of detail. There is one page that had a very detailed and absolutely massive encyclopedia of everything known in the story, but I can't find it at the moment. There are also easily as many pages speculating about parts of the story that are only hinted at in the game. Though most of those people don't know what they're talking about, some of it is not that bad.

Halo sucks. Woohoo, you can play it on the internet. That's never been done before!

Everything is totally average or unoriginal, no innovations for gameplay, nothing.

It's just another bland FPS that people go bananas over because omg Xbox Live!111!1!!!

People says Microsoft paid 14 million dollars for using the Rolling Stones song "Start me up" in their commercials. This is wrong. Microsoft paid 14 million dollars only for a part of the song. For instance, they didn't use the line "You'll make a grown man cry".

The point is, I never wondered any of this. None of these things you've mentioned ever crossed my mind as weird. Look at Half-Life, for example. If you're going to tell me you didn't say, "just who the hell is he?" after seeing the G-man a couple times, you're lying. HL2 goes further with the Combine and your adversary. HL3 is supposedly going to tie the loose-ends, but I'm skeptical.

And if that last one is supposed to be some Biblical reference, then that only proves my point that the plot is dry.

I've played half-life and never wondered any of those things before, but I can't exactly use that as proof that the game sucks, can I?

And it's sort of a Biblical reference. But not quite.

And does half life have three books written about it? I didn't think so :P . And Halo 2 broke sales records before it was even released! Mua-ha-ha-ha-ha.

But if you want to complain about a game, complain about Doom 3: Boiler Room Simulator.

Yes, but are those books any good? :P I mean, there's tons of Warhammer 40K books out there too. Doesn't prove a thing.

They weren't too bad, actually. They were better than I expected, and actually have a lot of information in them, enough that you have to read them carefuly to get subtle things.

Starcraft has books. Warcraft has books. Doom has books. Every Star Wars game has a book (and movies).

I fail to see how a book can improve the plot of a game. If having to read a book to understand something is part of it, then count me out.

And hey, I enjoyed Doom 3's old school throw-back. Multiplayer is the shiz-nit, as well.

A game can sell well without being good. If it does, books are a solid way to wring yet more money out of it. That still doesn't prove anything except popularity.

(Well Starcraft and Warcraft aren't shooters, but I think you knew that).

But yea, I forgot that part: Popularity doesn't equal greatness. Deus Ex? Epitome of greatness. But honestly, it didn't sell as well as Ion Storm would have hoped.

Halo was popular because it was one of the pioneers of a new genre on consoles. But then, shooters had been pretty much non-existent (save 007: Goldeneye [N64] and a select few others). Finally, all the console-heads got a chance to blow stuff up like the big boys. That, coupled with its party-friendly multiplayer modes made it a success for Microsoft's venture into consoles.

That kind of success will always be repeated, seeing as Halo was simply a repeat of the early days of say, Doom or Quake. Once someone figures out how to make RTS's work with only a gamepad, you can probably bet it'll be a hit. At least I would hope so.

Most of the time, that is so that it looks good. And as far as I'm concerned, there are only 3 good shooting games on my current or previous console (Playstation 1, PS2): Point Blank on PS1, Ghost Recon: Jungle Storm and Splinter Cell. Splinter Cell isn't really just bang bang shoot 'em up, but it does involve shooting. And finally, some may argue that GTA: San Andreas has a decent storyline, but I just think its about drugs, prostitutes and killing people. Which is why I play it, of course. ;)

You don't *have* to read the books to understand the game, they just elaborate on it. You're more than able to play through the game without any idea of what's going on.

And there were pleny of other console FPS games before it, off the top of my head, they had Doom and Quake for N64 a long time ago, as well as Turok, Perfect Dark, some other james bond one I can't remember at the moment, and a few others. They had a bunch for the playstation, too, Syphon Filter, Resident Evil, etc, etc. Halo was hardly the first console FPS. It wasn't even the first good console FPS.

And in no other game have I heard my enemy talk about his grunty thirst, and how he can't wait to get back to the food nipple on the ship :) .

And yes, yes, GTA is great even though it doesn't have a plot! The big doors are presumably for badass mech-like things that can kick a whole lot more as than you can in measly armor.

Of course, understanding the game makes things a lot easier, and better. It is the same as reading a book that you like and then you accidentaly missing a page and BOOM the main charecters friend is dead. Its happened to me before, trust me. Its not good.

You don't have to read the books to understand anything mentioned in the game. There's nothing the games specificaly reference that's in the books but not the game (that is, what it does reference you don't usually notice until you know it's there). The books only expand on the game, and fill in the details. Bungie did a good job of making the games completely self-contained so that people who have not read the books won't feel confused as to what's going on.

I absolutely loved Halo. Maybe the fact that I had just been playing Red Faction (most godawful FPS I have ever played. period.) could have influenced me, but I really enjoyed Halo.

Sure weapons didn't have alternate fire like in most modern FPSes, but they actually made grenades useful, unlike other games where you pick them up and never use them.

Halo also add a good deal of strategy (On legendary, at least, because seriously, you were roughly the physical match of a blue elite) because you couldn't just rush in wildly shooting. Cover was important, as were strategic tosses of grenades, and of course, your marine friends.

The only real problem I had with Halo was the levels were extremely repetitive, and during a few of the later bits became exceptionally boring. Then Halo 2 came along, with level design FAR surpassing that of Halo.

I'm not going to bother talking about the plot, because quite frankly, when it comes to shooters, I could really care less about a plot. Halo 2 was more plot heavy, and I skipped most of the cutscenes, but damn did I have a good time playing it.

There were some unique weapons in Halo (the needler was pretty cool) but in the end all you needed was the ridiculously useful pistol. (decent damage, a scope, can hold lots of ammo, all around good in any situation.) Halo 2 has some great balance, I found myself using just about every weapon on numerous occasions.

In short, I like Halo, I like Halo 2 better. Most other FPSes aren't really fun for me, and Halo is one of the few I can actually stand playing.

The needeler is cool, I've always liked it. It can be useful for taking out elites who are hiding up somewhere where you can't get to. I liked the fuel rod gun, too, it's pretty cool. HaloPC has a flamethrower you can use in multiplayer that's pretty cool as well. The pistol is pretty bad-ass, though, but not against the flood. Otherwise it's like a mini-sniper rifle death-machine. Halo 2's pistol isn't as great, but I haven't really used it that much.

I have an idea for an awesome kickass shooter. It would be the best shooter ever.
But I can't tell you what it is. It's a secret.
