Same. All I know about Ratzinger is that he is the new Pope. Not much more is required for me.

Edit: Cool. New page. I like making them.

Ratzinger is from my country, where all but two cardinals and the majority of catholics oppose him. It seems he never overcame the shock he experienced during the students' revolt in 1968, when he realized that he could no longer force his students to listen to him or accept his authority. According to him, their behaviour threatened civilization as such.

From then on, his purpose in life has been to keep vigil, believing in dogma as the only means to avoid chaos and confusion, and interpreting it in the strictest and narrowest sense possible. Later, his position within the church provided the means to enforce the rules and get rid of 'dissidents'.

He is intellectually brilliant, ruthless, and follows his path with great resolve.

My brother said that they picked an old Pope so that he wouldn't last long, and they would have plenty of time to think 'who's next'. Also because the last Pope lasted too long.

I don't think he was serious. :D

That would be a weird thing for the Catholic church to do. I don't really think that it is something that they would do though. They had to swear an oath that they were voting for the one they thought would be best for the job.

Aran, whats with those pictures? Are they meant to be look alikes? If they are they don't really look alike. Thats just my opinion, though.

Ratzinger doesn't really look like either, no. He looks more sinister than Senator Palpatine, and a lot more healthy than Emperor Palpatine. But he does have some similarities with both. I figured he would fit somewhere between the two pictures, which is exactly where I posted him.

That is one of the stupidest things I have heard. Of course they will be older when they die. And, I think the youngest Pope was 14. Correct me if I'm wrong, though.

Also, congratulations to the new Pope. I was, like Ash Lael, hoping for the aussie, but knew he didn't have much of a chance.

Okay, first of all, I was talking about The Popes voted in in modern day times, not Popes that were Voted in you know, Back in The Day.

Second of all, The 14 year old Pope your talking about might be the last Emperor of The Western Roman Empire who was 14. I don't think it was The Pope. Anyway, carry on.

A perfectly good but old pope could be elected if the cardinals believe that it is in the Church's best interests to have a short papacy. I believe it has happened before and it doesn't seem unreasonable.

—Alorael, who is sure all kinds of strange things have happened, possibly including extremely young popes. There is certainly a persistent story about Pope Joan. But in general, yes, popes are now old. And yes, they die when they're older, but that should be obvious.

This Pope called homosexuals "a moral evil." He sounds like a great guy.

Again, he's the freaking pope. You are simply not gonna get a pope who'll stand up and say "You know what? I think that we'll allow female priests now, and they can be married if they like, even to another woman, or maybe a dog if that's what they want. They can use condoms too, and if those don't work, hey, there's always abortion."

But the Pope will have to address the inadequate number of priests. The ordination of married men (not forbidden until the Middle Ages) seems like the most obvious way to do that.

I personally find Abortion to be a sin, but in a libraled way because your killing a innocent baby, but that's just me. As for things like Gay and Lesbian Marriages, well, I'm sort of indiffrent to it. The only thing I do not like about this Pope is that he ceases to address the Scandles in The Church concerning the priests which I do not have to spell out for you.

Spring, stop posting one line agreements. They're spam.

But they do lift the post count. :P

And I wonder if anyone else spots the irony in Alorael's current PDN, remembering fondly the dozens of topics which he has sniped after posting the last post in them? :D

A uniter?
Some Ratzinger quotes:

ON JEWS AND ISRAEL

That the Jews are connected with God in a special way and that God does not allow that bond to fail is entirely obvious. We wait for the instant in which Israel will say yes to Christ, but we know that it has a special mission in history now...

ON CHURCH SEX ABUSE CASES

In the Church, priests also are sinners. But I am personally convinced that the constant presence in the press of the sins of Catholic priests, especially in the United States, is a planned campaign, as the percentage of these offences among priests is not higher than in other categories, and perhaps it is even lower.

ON HOMOSEXUALITY

Although the particular inclination of the homosexual person is not a sin, it is a more or less strong tendency ordered to an intrinsic moral evil, and thus the inclination itself must be seen as an objective disorder...

ROCK MUSIC

"Rock"... is the expression of the elemental passions, and at rock festivals it assumes a sometimes cultic character, a form of worship, in fact, in opposition to Christian worship.

I suppose if you treat rock music as a cultic form of worship where you express elemental passions it might be considered paganistic, but how many people do that? I ,at least, don't treat rock music any different than any other music I listen to (except for church music, and that's supposed to be a form of worship)

Me and my friend decided to go to Pope Rumour sites and see what they thought. Out of the 5 sites-

3/5: Ratzinger
1/5: Any African American
1/5: An American priest (shudder)

There were two others that said,
a- A woman would win
b- No one would win, causing another Civil War

And everybody say....Yatta!
