We now have a new pope. I'm watching at my school with some other people. There is now Pope Benedict XVI. Ratzinger won and they're announcing it on the air. Wa-hoo!

EDIT: A lot of people suspected that he'd win. I guess they were all right....

He's also 78 years old, so he likely won't be around as long as John Paul II. While I don't know what his "politics" are, I understand that he's somewhat hardlined on all the traditional Catholic values that John Paul II championed.

I've heard that Ratzinger is even more orthodox and conservative than Johannus Paulus II.

He was known as the Cardinal of Iron (Cardenal de Hierro). He is (was?) also a rather hardcore man. He chose the name Benedict because of Benedict XV (1854-1922, Pontiff: 1914-1922) because he was considered to be a very diplomatic Pope)

There had been quite some talk before Ratzinger's election that the Church would more than likely elect an old Pope who would serve as a transition.

Notice that it took little over a Day to make this decision, which also makes sense since they would want to avoid a prolong period that might cast negative publicity on the Church.

Even though the man is 78 years old, he is in good health (as opposed to how John Paul II was when he was 78, his health had already been deteriorating for a while), so he might last, God willing, maybe even a decade.

(bad news: I guess this won't be the one. Far as I know there's no linking him with Malachias' stuff)

This is very bad news for the Catholic Church (and people in general). He's about as conservative as it's possible to get, so don't expect any nice liberal teachings on abortion, contraception, gay people or women priests.

The only blessing is that hopefully he won't be around for long.

There are no people in the upper echelon really that have liberal views.

Thanks to JP2's Cardinal College stuffing...

But on a comparative basis, there were more reasonable candidates.

Certainly ones who weren't advocating Jansenism.

Ratzinger advocated Jansenism??

IIRC, Jansenism is the doctrine that grace is irresistable, and Pascal at least flirted with it, maybe even accepted it, but it was officially condemned by some Pope. This sort of thing is pretty famously subtle for nonspecialists, but it must be rather elementary for professional RC theologians. So on the whole I'd expect that the Cardinal who headed the official successor institution to the Inquisition would have been able to steer carefully clear of such a well-known heresy.

As far as I'm concerned, though, Jansenism doesn't seem so bad. I mean, it would be nice if grace were irresistable.

Sorry- I must have given the wrong name. (It happens when you have to memorize anywhere up to 50 heresies.) I was referring to the doctrine that sexual sins are the worst.

(Of course, it could just be that New Advent- the source I use to verify stuff like this- is hiding that part.)

Ah, ok. I don't know what name that doctrine would have, either, but it ought to have a notorious one.
Ehhh, sadly, I suppose it might almost go by Augustinianism. But then in his old age Augustine is supposed to have anticipated Jansen, or come awfully close, so maybe there's a connection after all.

This is a Nazi sympathizer. He has voiced racist and Nazi views in his life. What a come down for the Church. My guess is all this "nonsense" about outreach to Jews will quietly stop.

He's the freaking pope. Do you really expect a non-conservative one, ever, anyone?

Edit: I'd be pretty wary of branding anyone a Nazi.

He was in the Hitlerjugend. He served in the Deutsche Armee.

Yes, and that is obviously an indication of his character, because I know Hitler didn't ever make anyone do anything against their will. Especially join the army.

From Wikipedia:

quote:
Joseph Ratzinger was born in Marktl am Inn, in Bavaria, the son of a police officer who was staunchly anti-Nazi. In 1937 Ratzinger's father retired and settled in the town of Traunstein. When Ratzinger turned 14 in 1941, he joined the Hitler Youth, as all young men in Germany were required to do in the Third Reich. According to biographer John Allen, Ratzinger was an unenthusiastic member who refused to attend any meetings. In 1943, at the age of 16, he and the rest of his class were drafted into the Flak or anti-aircraft corps, responsible for guarding a BMW plant outside Munich. He was then sent for basic infantry training and was posted to Austrian-Hungarian border, where he worked setting up anti-tank defences. After being shipped back to Bavaria, he deserted in May 1945 and returned to Traunstein.

Shortly after returning to Traunstein, he was detained in an Allied POW camp, where he attended de-Nazification classes. By June he was released, and he and his brother (Georg) entered a Catholic seminary. On June 29, 1951, they were ordained by Cardinal Faulhaber of Munich. His dissertation (1953) was on Saint Augustine, his Habilitationsschrift (second dissertation) on Saint Bonaventure.

Here is my feelings on the new Pope. I really have nothing against him except for the fact that he's 78. I would have prefered a Younger Pope in The Vatican, specifically from The US. Probably from The US because I am American, and I allso want a American Pope to address Problems in The US. Such as Gang Related and Drug Related Problems. I know those problems are everywhere these days, but there really bad in The US. As for the fact that he might last a decade, well has anyone ever seen a young Pope, The Youngest Pope in my life time that I ever saw would have to be the last one because he was in his fifties when he was first made Pope. But anyway usually Popes are old I don't know how old, but Old when there first made Pope, and are even older when they die. So this Pope might, but don't quot me on this, live to his ninties, and so he'll be Pope for allmost twenty years. But you'd never know that from The Pope Before our last Pope who lasted only a Month. But our last Pope lasted for A good Twenty seven years. So who knows how long this Pope will last. Anyway, Chances are this Pope will be around for a while, and so if you are Catholic such as myself you have no other choice but to grow to respect The New Pope.

I would have preferred a pope specifically from Africa or the third world. I want an African or third wordl pope to address problems in the US. Such as starvation, AIDs, tsunamis, destitution and abhorrent working conditions. I know these problems are everywhere these days, but there really bad in Africa and The Third World.

I think asking the Pope to fix secular problems is a tall order. Yes, I know that's part of the job description, but I'd rather have competent politicians to do it and maintain a healthy separation of church and state.

—Alorael, who knows that that is definitely not the Pope's job. And there's something to be said for advocating from the pulpit when the cause is right. It beats letting evils go ignored.

How is saying something like that not supposed to offend people?

Also, I think all this athiesm stuff is just there so some people can feel smart (or at least, less dumb). :P Not to offend anybody, you understand.

I was cheering for Pell (because, you know, he's an Aussie), but I knew he had basically no chance. Hopefully, Benedict XVI will be half as good as John Paul II.

It'd be pretty hypocritical for a Pope to involve himself heavily in partisan politics, considering that the Church's justification for cracking down on liberation theology was essentially that Jesus was not a political figure.

That is one of the stupidest things I have heard. Of course they will be older when they die. And, I think the youngest Pope was 14. Correct me if I'm wrong, though.

Also, congratulations to the new Pope. I was, like Ash Lael, hoping for the aussie, but knew he didn't have much of a chance.

I actually have a lot of respect for Pell as person (despite differing significantly on some theological points - as you'd expect since I'm not Catholic). Of course I'd have loved for him to get the papacy simply for national pride reasons, but I really do think he'd be a darn good pope.

On the other hand, I know next to nothing about the other candidates (including Ratzinger), so my opinion there is pretty worthless. :P
