I read a set of similar questions once, where the given sequence was along the lines of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and the next number was not 6 for whatever reason. Some of them were quite ingenious. But of course Khoth's answer would work as well. I'm in favor of 42. -------------------- Freude, schöner Götterfunken, Tochter aus Elysium, Wir betreten feuertrunken, Himmlische, dein Heilighthum! How about this one. 1 2 3 5 8 4 3 7 1? It's cyclical by the way. -------------------- "And all should cry, Beware, Beware! His Flashing eyes, his Floating hair!" S. T. As most of you probably know, the equation X^2 + Y^2 = R represents a circle. Can you think of a variation of this formula that represents a square? -------------------- Freude, schöner Götterfunken, Tochter aus Elysium, Wir betreten feuertrunken, Himmlische, dein Heilighthum! It's x²+y² = r². If you write r you have to write a sqare root over the other side. As far as I can see, it doesn't represent a circle, but the distance from the origin to the point (X,Y). Of course, this distance can mean the radius of a circle with the origin as center and (x,y) on the perimeter. But you can use this formula also to calculate the diagonal of a rectangle with corners on the origin and (x,y). So it isn't limited to circles. lim{n-->inf}(x^n + y^n = z^n) does a square, I think. -------------------- Grammar wenches beware: This is the house that the malt that the rat that the cat that the dog that the cow that the maiden that the man that the priest that the cock that the farmer kept waked married kissed milked tossed worried killed ate lay in. Actually there are a few points which will always be on that line. (0,z)(z,0). Depending on which number n is, those z's could be plus or minus as well. -------------------- Lt. Sullust Cogito Ergo Sum Polaris Posts: 2462 | Registered: Wednesday, October 3 2001 07:00 |

The series is actually made by adding the last two elements, but taking only the cross sum of the result to keep it to one digit. So, 2+3=5 3+5=8 5+8=13, 1+3=4 8+4=12, 1+2=3 4+3=7 3+7=1 7+1=8 1+8=9 8+9=17, 1+7=8 and so on. -------------------- "And all should cry, Beware, Beware! His Flashing eyes, his Floating hair!" S. T. He's dead though, so what can he do about it? The cross sum is just in order to keep it cyclical of course. Btw, if you start such a sequence with any two digits from 1,1 to 9,8, you only get four different sequences (the fifth would contain only 9,9,9,9 etc.). All of those sequences, with one exception, turn back on themselves after an equal number of elements. The exception is 3,6,9,6,6,3,6,9, etc. I haven't yet figured out why that is so... -------------------- "And all should cry, Beware, Beware! His Flashing eyes, his Floating hair!" S. T. edit: elfy (heh heh) it is because all numbers are special in their own special way. especialy the numbers 0,1,pi,e, and i. and two. people from time to time mention new math, supposedly invented by a prisoner. I've always thought that they were just being ignorant. does anyone know anything about this? )this post brought to you by the sigma function- results of a lazy tutor and a very smart student. and the number at the far end of pi.
