quote:Like I said, they shouldn't be removed. I don't think they should have been made playable, but they're there now, and that's that. Although my reasons for removing them weren't because of filthy furries, but because they didn't really fit in as well as a playable race should into Avernum society. A lot more people should have hated them than actually did, considering how long they had been (from the Avernites perspective) murdering and raiding humans. Anyway, what's wrong with stick figure drawings of generic humans? Posts: 8 | Registered: Friday, May 5 2006 07:00 |

Well, I already thought that those two races didn't belong in the straight Avernum games. Blades, perhaps, because who knows what situations the designer will put the player in. But not Avernum. Still, they're there, and I think it's probably more trouble than it's worth to take them out, since they're an established fact of the series now. I'd just prefer not to compound the problem even further by adding to it. Posts: 8 | Registered: Friday, May 5 2006 07:00 |

I wouldn't really want new races. The Vahnatai would certainly be interesting to play, but they really don't belong as a player race, since they're so overpowered, and because they are so removed from the day to day lives of humans, which the games mostly sympathise with. Spiders would be interesting as well, but again they obviously don't belong as a player race. This one would be interesting, though, for the fact that they would of course be unable to use weapons or armour. I'd enjoy playing some sort of fighter that has to rely solely on their physical attributes rather than their equipment. However, you'd have to either play out of character, which would make no sense, or the dialogue tree would become really annoying and stupid. And since I'm not into zoophilia, I don't want to see more yiffy races. Sure, it's fine and even interesting having beast races in the game, but I really don't want to see the entire racial selection list filled up with furry lovetoys, and then "Oh yeah, and you can play a human. If you must.". Posts: 8 | Registered: Friday, May 5 2006 07:00 |

I've never played any of the Exile games, but I couldn't imagine playing with 6 characters. I always play Avernum with 1 character, I've never played with more. I'd just find it too much of a hassle to be managing 6 characters (in combat, though not in the rest of the game). It's the same reason I never bothered to finish Ultima 5, because you couldn't set NPCs to AI, and the game was too hard with one character. I always set creations to AI in Geneforge as well, regardless of how much Intelligence I've given them. Posts: 8 | Registered: Friday, May 5 2006 07:00 |
Game not saving in Blades of Avernum | |

I actually do use a few different saves. For instance I have one before I start a scenario (in case it's too hard for my current party, or too buggy, so I don't lose a year from quitting before I finish) another for normal gameplay, and one or two others where I enter a situation that I can't get out of easily. If, for example, I enter an area that I can't get out of easily, I might find it too difficult, so I might want to go back to an earlier save so I can search for items or experience. However, I was using "Save Game" when I'm just going along normally and saving my progress from time to time. It's a nuisance using "Save As" to just save over the same file anyway, but I guess it's what I'll have to do from now on. Posts: 8 | Registered: Friday, May 5 2006 07:00 |

Well, this is interesting. I just found the problem. Usually when I use "Save Game" instead of "Save Game As", it will save the game as, for example, "blades.sav". But it seems it has also been on rare occasions just saving it as "blades". It doesn't need the extension, as I just tried it and it loads the game back just fine, and incidentally I just regained an hour or so I thought I had lost. This seems to be a bug, as otherwise it would always save it as one or the other. Thanks for the help, it gave me an idea of what I should be looking for. Sometimes when I click the button in the menu to save my game, it won't actually save. It usually does, so it's obviously not a write permission problem on the file. So I'll save before a fight for example, lose the fight and have to reload, and all of a sudden I find I'm further back in the game than when I actually last told the game to save, which is sometimes enough to make me quit the game in disgust for a few hours. I also check the message log when this happens, and I can clearly see that it tells me the game was saved just before the fight, so it is also not some weird problem with not hitting the save button square on and dropping out of the menu. Anyone have this problem? Is there any way to stop it happening? I've patched the game already with the latest patch.
