What do YOU want to see in G4? in Geneforge Series

Some things I would like to see:

1. Not actually a gameplay element, but still useful--the ability to pause and minimize the screen so I can work on something else if I need to. I like to multitask and consequently am forced to quit playing when something comes up.

2. A new tier of creations, by which I mean (for example) a Fyora, a Cryoa, and something stronger. We've had the first two for three games already, and a few new groups of creations for two. I think the idea of a Hydra Artila (with multiple heads, not water-based) is really cool; at the very least it could substitute for Spray Crystals.

2b. On that note, maybe some new spells too. The Exile games have a HUGE number of spells; surely some of them can be adapted for GF. I have fond memories of casting Wall of Force.

3. Further development of the conflict between orthodox Shapers and the rebelling ones. Maybe as far as full-blown war, in which the PC has the option of accepting attack/defend missions and has to be in a certain place by a certain time (making use of the day tracker) to fulfill them.

4. A different way of teaching newbies the basics of the game. Maybe something like being forced to cull and tame a creation from a group made by a controlled Spawner. The player could be given Ensnaring Crystals and a Rod of Control (or whatever), then forced to return any unused items so they don't have an unfair advantage.

Side note: the starting point seems to be progressing steadily with each game (first one--not yet apprenticed, second one--just starting apprenticeship, third one--about halfway); maybe the fourth one will start with the Test.

5. Keyboard shortcuts for spells and combat, if not also for equipping items. Also, moving the Quick Spell/Item buttons to various letter keys (maybe ones in the upper row, which aren't really used) instead of the function keys would be great. Having to press the 'fn' button every time I want to heal is a nuisance.

6. Some way to store items, with in some sort of bank or a creation/companion that carries stuff. Having to drop my heavy Crystals or face severe encumberment and go back for them later is a pain.

One final note: playing as a human (instead of a Shaper) isn't very plausible unless you start, play, and end as a rebel because the Shapers have constistently guarded their power with extreme jealousy. If they found out that you, a measly human, were using their powers, they'd probably put a price on your head and/or send a small army to kill you.

I'm going through the Lair of the Creator (Greenwood Isle) and I've only found Fyoras, Thahds, and Crawlers, so it seems that there's one per island or something.

Theoretically, you can convince the Creators to obey you with enough Leadership, but that never worked for me. And my Fyora keeps dying under the wave of Crawlers that the *%#@ing thing keep spawning.

There isn't much I can say about it; it's one of the problems with Avernum. The path begins on the west (upper-left) side of the trees, so look there. You won't actually see your characters move because of Avernum's line-of-sight problem, but the screen will shift.

There's anothe nifty side-quest in Valley of the Dying Things that hasn't been mentioned so far.

When you get to Pangle's hut, talk to the dog and the sheep (yes, they can talk). After calling the sheep "Mutton," the sheep will tell you that the dog stores his bones in the patch of trees at the northeast edge of the area. Search around in the middle of the trees to get a scroll for Create Illusions. Personally, I found the argument between the dog and sheep (as well as the "sheeply offense") to be more satisfying than the reward.

The automap function will be a great help here. To start, your party should be south of Blinlock (the town surrounded by rock walls). Travel eastward until you reach a lookout tower. Then head north until you find an alcove in the northern edge of the map. If you reach the end of the alcove and go north through a secret wall, you're in the right place. Just follow the path to the end.

The quest isn't really worth it, since you have to cross a magma panel and fight a bunch of lizards to get it. On your first play-through, it's pretty much assumed that one character will die unless your priest is hasted and your fighters use Healing Potions. All you get for completing the quest is experience and two spells: Smite and Ice Lances. Your spellcasters should already know these spells, so I'd advise you avoid this quest unless your trying to make two Priest/Mages. Then again, many of the Usefull Skills are based on a combination of skill with Priest and Mage spells so it may be worth your time.

You mean you're in the Major Waste Repository, you've activated the disposal controls, and you released the quickfire? If so, you just have to get your first character down the stairs.

If you haven't gotten that far, you're probably in the Control Tower. Just leave, go back through the Experimental Halls and the Student Quarters to the huge cave, then head northeast (right in terms of where the arrow's pointing) until your path is totally blocked by green puddles. Then head north (up and right) through the puddles, then keep going until you see another building, the Major Waste Repository.

Once you're in, go northwest (up) through the openings in the walls and fight your way through the imps and such until you get to a point north of where you started. Then head north, crush the two constructs on the platform, head up the stairs, and activate the controls by sitting in the chair. Then move quickly back to the ground floor to win the scenario (I'm not spoiling the ending). Be sure to move as quickly as you can because your PCs get diseased if you dawdle. Some of the treasures are blocked, so don't bother if it's your first time through.

If you win your bet, do I get a cut for helping? ;)

I got my strategy from the help guide that came with the demo. It worked for me.

There's another way to get Pangle to tell you about the papers.

When you get to the area with the Vahnatai, talk to Baia-Tel. If you ask the right questions, he'll say that a bitter person on the surface (Pangle) has a copy of the instructions to the controls. Then head to Pangle's hut and either pay 500 gold or kill the hydras.

Now for my own questions:

1. Does anyone know where I can get a Drake Fang for one of the subquests? I found it once in BoE, but that was years ago.

2. Where is the source of Fort Talrus' rat infestation?
