when you get a canister for shaping or level up a shaping ability
what effect does it have on the creations that you have at the moment?
does it pay to absorb and recreate them or does it upgrade them?
or its only worth it it you have the creation a short time?

No, the canister doesn't upgrade them. Keeping creations through the game can be beneficial, but absorbing them can be too. It depends on what you want to do, and which class you are.

Then it is probably beneficial to absorb creations.

Whenever you make a creation, it is created at a level equal to the appropriate shaping skill plus the creation's base level. Thus, if you have a brand new fyora and you somehow get two more levels of Fire Shaping immediately, it's a good idea to absorb it and make a new one. If that fyora has already gained two levels since you created it you should hold onto it. If you're not sure, save your game and see whether a newly shaped creation is higher level or not.

Besides the minimum requirements for making any creation type, the shaping skills have no effect besides boosting creation levels. Adding to your skills doesn't help unless you plan on making new creations.

—Alorael, who also feels obligated to warn that the one skill point = one level formula ends at 10 points in the skill. After that the benefits drop off. Some people consider that a good reason not to have any shaping higher than 10 (or 4, because you can get an extra 6 points from equipment). He personally likes higher shaping, but it's a matter of taste.

Also, the number of points you have in that particular creation will add levels in addition to those from your shaping skill (so there is more point to that than the alternate creation type from having 3 points).

I think Jeff removed that restriction in the latest versions of the game.

Also, there's another benefit to hanging on to creations. Generally, creations can level up faster than if you absorb them an make a new one. Of course, absorbing them for a new tier of creations is usually a practical route. Even the most level-advanced lower tier creations tend to lose their value when you wander into a new chapter.

Some lower level creations are more prone to charm and terror spells. This starts to become important in chapter 4 - Burwood.

He didn't. What he said was that it was an oversight that it wasn't removed, and he'd remove it in future games.
