In Avernum/Exile there were always placed you could put excess equipment. My Shaper is currently carrying about 30lbs in pods. Is there anywhere I can put them where they won't get stolen?

You can put them anywhere. Just lay them on the ground and come back later.

Though Nalyd would advise selling them.

Try to leave them in a cleared zone or a safe town. Some towns get hostile if you change sects.

Geneforge 1 and 2 have a maximum amount of coins that they can buy things with and you don't want to have to buy things back from merchants.

The only issue with dropping things is that you are limited to 200 items (stacking items like gemstones will only count as a single item) in a single zone, after which things start to disappear.

Why would they dissapear and who took the time too take all those items in a zone to find out?

The limit on number of items in a zone exists to conserve memory. It's not impossible to hit it if you use one place to cache everything you don't need immediately.

I've never hit the limit for items in a zone, despite being a major pack rat. And before you ask, yes, I set up one rather huge cache.

However, I have found a limit to how much stuff you can drop on a single space.

Well, do you get any warning that you can't drop anything anymore - i believe it was in E2 or A2 in Olgai that i saw such a warning i believe, but i'm not sure.
And also what about putting things in crates, barrels, cabinets etc. Does that also count towards the limit?
Finally - do you really think it is 200 - isn't that a little low - i mean, with all the sticks and such lying around ...

Ps: Is there any order in which the things start to disappear?

Yup. The engine is smart enough to make junk go away before useful items.

200 items per zone?
typical.
I have a good idea though!
Organize items per zone.
Zone 1:Stackable items only
Zone 2:Magic items(non-stackable)
Bandit woods:basic items(because vakirri has 50 items that are labled NY and that counts among the item limit)
Im just guessing.

Whatever works, works, I guess. As long as you can keep track of your stuff, go for it.
